Will a steering wheel make me faster?

It really depends. For some YES, for some NOT. For me YES!
When you never drove with a Force Feedback Steering wheel, it will take many many hours of getting use to, then you should be able to match your speed that you made with a PAD, or even better.

For me it made me faster, because wheel is more accurate and smoother to Turn, brake, accelerate, etc etc.. as well you are able to feel the car with the feedback if car is or is about to over steer, under steer, etc etc.. a decent wheel adds so much to simulation and fun factor with a racing game, both for arcade games and sim games.

I would say give it a go..

IF you wanna buy a wheel, do not make any mistakes. Only 2 wheel companies you should buy and consider is LOGITECH or FANATEC . Never buy a wheel other then those two companies, some other cheap 100 dollar wheels are crap and will not make you faster and you will hate them.

It took me a couple of weeks to get used to the DFP, and I still am not any good with it in GT4 (though I suck considerably less at Enthusia with it).

This is a very personal thing. When I looked into fastest times a while ago I found that some of the best times posted were with a gamepad and some with wheels. Personally I have found the whole thing to be much more involving, I mean MUCH more involving! The feeling you get as the car goes light over the brows at tracks like La Sarthe, Nurburgring and many others is just brilliant, and the kickback you get as you bash BTCC style into the side of another car is awesome. I just picked up GT4 again after about 3 years and started over, but I'm sure this time I picked up 80 golds in a hell of a lot less time than the last time I tried. Having said that, it took a looooooong time to get used to the wheel.

I didn't think i would be faster with a wheel but i've been able to beat most of my free run times i set with a controller. Though usually with a different car(online PP restricted races). However my consistency is definitely better.

Best Free Runs
------------------Controller-----Wheel-----Same or different car
Inter Suzuka 750 1'51.088-------1'51.516 Same
Inter Suzuka 800 1'47.240-------1'47.355 Same
Inter Suzuka 650 2'00.099-------2'00.191 Different
Inter Eiger 650 1'03.8xx-------1'02.233 Different
Expt Suzuka 650 2'06.3xx-------2'05.4xx Different
Expt Suzuka 700 2'01.8xx-------2'00.371 Different
All Fuji events I have been faster with a wheel
All High Speed Ring events I have beeen faster with a wheel

What i've noticed is, with a controller you are able to use more oversteer in your settings. Mid engine rear drive cars handle best with a controller in standard physics. Lift oversteer is extremely easy to control with a pad. With a wheel you either need more grip in the rear or less in the front when compared to your controller settings. However cars with a more neutral steering completely favor the wheel. Eiger 650 for example, WRX 07 was the fastest there. but with a controller the car just wouldn't turn in enough. It didn't have enough oversteer.

It is almost opposite with professional physics. With a controller 4WD's are your best bet. There just isn't enough throttle control for the RWD cars in high PP events. And the steering input isn't precise enough for heavy oversteering cars. In professional physics using a wheel is without question an advantage.

I've found that, in intermediate, if the dominate car is a natural oversteerer such as the GTLM, a controller can be slightly faster. simply due to the fact that you can tune your car to have more oversteer. However; if the dominate car has a more neutral steering tendency then the wheel has the advantage. A big advantage. When tuning for intermediate races i found only a few cars oversteered enough for controller use. The GTLM and NSX Type R being the best.

Suzuka 750 my best time with a controller was faster then my wheel time by the largest margin, almost half a second. But my best total race times were 5'38.5 for the controller and 5'38.9 with a wheel. The consistency of the wheel almost made up for the slower outright pace. In Suzuka 650 my overall race times are faster with a wheel because of the consistency.

As for tracks, ones with long sweeping corners like High Speed Ring, you will be faster with a wheel because of the precision steering. Fuji a wheel is better also because you don't need as much front grip with a wheel so you can have more power instead. Tracks that suit a controller are ones that need much oversteer such as Suzuka. Suzuka using the GTLM and NSX were the only events i was faster with a controller. every other event i have been faster with a wheel.

So i believe you will no doubt gain consistency with a wheel. Will you be faster? It all depends on the car and track but for the most part you should be faster on average as well.

It will make you appreciate racing games more.
I thought GRID was so-so, until I hooked up my wheel - now I can't get enough.

For the sim racing games (GT/L4S) - prepare for a bit of a learning curve.
I felt great after a week of solid practice, and now can beat my controller-set-times.

Thanks.

I think I will splash out. The logitech GT wheel at amazon is just over £60, It's gatta be a good deal. I wonder if they are cheap because of the delay of GT5.

Logitech GT wheel, This one you mean right?

If yes, go for it. This is the best wheel to start with. Some people consider the wheel better then G25, except pedals are worse and no H shifter, but you will love it!
About being cheap?
60 British pounds = 99.02400 U.S. dollars
On US amazon its 109 USD ( SALE)
Amazon has many Sales, so prices may go up again. GO FOR IT!

Thats the one. I will post what I make of it once I have used it for a while.

I asked in "game" yesterday about the release date of GT5 and I was told 25th of September. I hope thats right, but I have a feeling I will be waiting untill Christmas.
