I agree. I really think pCARS is a bit of a GT and Forza killer myself. It is what they should be but aren't.
Anyway, no doubt people will set up websites dedicated to it but whether they become anything like GTPlanet is another thing. Other than the extreme simulation guys, and that's a tiny percentage of players.
Personally, I haven't seriously played GT for about 5 years (since I got into iRacing) but I still regularly visit GTPlanet as it is a great website that has areas for all racing games and more besides. So, I'll visit the pCARS forum here regularly as well as the official forums.
The GT phenomenon is not likely to be repeated. They had the right combination of the right platform, and the right game at the right time and have dominated this genre like no other by skirting the line between simulation and arcade in a way that appeals to both sides of the genre without alienating either one. Other than the extreme simulation guys of course which is why we are here, and that's a tiny percentage of players.
PCars isn't trying to do that, at least not with this version. They are targeting a smaller subset of the broader audience, the true
racers if you will
, and I don't think the market for that is GT in scale. The things that have made GT popular, the customization, painting, huge car selection, quirky car selection, quirky tuning, car upgrading, unrealistic tire options making it easier to drive and win, laid back gaming style and layout are not present in PCars.
PCars will be wildly, wildly successful if they can sell 2 million units on each console and whatever they sell on PC, but 10 million units, I don't think there's even a remote chance of that. Now with PCars2 or PCarsHorizon that's another story...we'll have to wait and see what happens.
By the way, there are various sites that already cater to the sim racing genre like RaceDepartment, Race2Play, VirtualiR, NoGrip Racing etc. None are even close to the overall scale of GTP because they are mainly focused on the racing aspects of the games and that they do very well, far better than GTP IMO, when it comes to sim racing.
