Well if its anything like a phone, my 2.4 ghz phone starts to go out of range once i hit about 1/4 of a mile. So i could only guess dubble that for a 5 ghz. Like 1/2 a mile? BTW thats with no walls or trees blocking the way.
That's not a proper way to guage things. 802.11B has a much larger range than 802.11A, and 802.11B is only 2.4ghz or something, whereas A is much higher and quicker.

The 5.0GHz routers begin to suffer serious degradation at >30 metres. However, everyone gets excited about the bandwidth, but what's the point of connecting at 55Mb, when you're only trying to steal part of his 1Mb connection! By turning down the link speed, you can extend the range.
802.11.g will only run you Up to 1800 ft Range from Belkin Compnents and their router that runs at that frequency. Minus walls and everything you will have lessrange. This is coming directly from Dell.
I wouldn't use wireless. if you use 802.11g, it'll either use a or b frequency, and a doesn't have that great of range, and most cordless phones share the frequency with b, so it's kind of a lose-lose situation. The best option would be to have a wired LAN via CAT5, and maybe get your other neighbors in on the action.... but you'd have to run it by your friend first.
