Satriani is full of epic solos.

To change from Satriani and his friends (who are among my favorite guitar players), here's the only guitarist I may like even more : Steve Rothery. This guy has an incredible technique, but what I like the most with him is that he doesn't overdo it and gives priority to the composition and the emotions. And I love his sound ! I just discovered he made a solo album last year, and... and... seriously, how can you describe that with words ?

This guy is mostly known for playing in the band Marillion (big fan here), but he made also side projects, such as The Wishing Tree.

I can't resist to put up a few more iconic pieces of art from him :

The bit from 4:35 just kills me, perfect demonstration guitar doesn't needs to shout all over the place. Hear it cry ! But take the time to listen to the whole piece, it's worth it.

Putting this one because of the end of the song just after the solo (at 2:10). Incredible poetry and strong meaning. But I could have nearly posted the whole Rothery's discography here, there are so much great solos (with more demonstrative ones if you prefer that), but I had to make a choice, which would have been probably different if I made that decision at another tandom moment.

I could make this list go on forever, but I'll narrow it down to 3.

The Analog Kid by Rush has my favorite solo in any song ever. Don't know why, but I've always been drawn to how it sounds and how epic it is. (Solo starts at 3:28, but listen to the whole song. Adds to it.)

Second favorite would be the first few minutes of Close To The Edge by Yes. If you've heard it, I don't need to explain it. Skip the first minute if you want to get right to the song.

Finally, I'll put on here the 3rd solo to Dogs by Pink Floyd. Entire song is a jam, it's my favorite Floyd song. The 3rd solo really captures how the song has gone and is what I'd consider the "high point" of the song, especially since it is right before the breakdown, and it's a sweet little solo to start the breakdown. (Solo starts at 13:25)

The song may sound like a cover of Pink Floyd's Breathe at first, but the last guitar solo at 4:39 just makes me feel.... It's not particularly skillful or anything, just loud and emotional.

@TrentDog1 -- I agree with you about Gilmour's guitar work in Dogs. I think Animals is Floyd's strongest album and Gilmour was really as his best during that period. Have you ever heard that alternate version of Dogs? It has Roger Waters singing the opening verses and then Gilmour sings, the opposite of what is on the studio album. Anyway, there is a 3rd guitar overlay by Gilmour when he drops his solos and it just sound so dirty, raw and frankly, incredible... This is just a demo, so it doesn't sound nearly as good as the studio release, but his solo work is just insane in Dogs. I really wish he would play the song live when he tours... I almost had a heart attack when Roger Waters played it during his 1999 tour.

The Rush love in here is fantastic. Let's keep it going!

There is no way in hell I can pick a single solo to claim as my favorite, so I'll just post a few of my top favorites.

It starts at around 1:55. This whole album is fantastic and easily one of my favorites - Passage To Bangkok pretty much sets that in concrete for me. Alex Lifeson is undoubtedly a legend.
We have assumed control!

This song technically has two, but I'll count it as one. Black Sabbath/Tommy Iommi use War Pigs as a perfect example of what heavy metal is, and what it should always be. Solo #1 starts at 3:30, the second at about 6 minutes.

April Wine, considering how many albums the have released, is one of those bands. You know the ones - the bands that are sadly never heard on any classic rock stations, never discussed when classic rock is brought up - not underrated, but just forgotten about.
Sign of the Gypsy Queen is a song from April Wine that captures that 70s rock gem that so many people loved, let alone it had a kick ass solo. Starts at about 2:02.

It's sad that Nugent's political views blurred out a lot of his music work. He's no longer viewed as a guitarist, but rather some guy who complains about guns on CNN.
Regardless of your political views, Ted Nugent should be viewed as one of the most iconic guitarists around.
Solo starts at about 2 minutes.

Frampton Comes Alive? Everyone has the record Frampton Comes Alive!
Peter Frampton, though (very sadly) having a long yet hardly noticed career, continues to be my favorite musicians of all time.
Frampton Comes Alive, however, was a record that emerged early in 1976 and soared to the top with giant commercial success. Selling at around 11 million copies worldwide and stayed at the top of the Billboard for almost two years, everyone knew then what a great guitarist Peter Frampton was, and still is.
Solo #1 - 2:02
Solo #2 - 5:54
Solo #3 - Talk Box Solo - 7:20
Solo #4 - Finale - 11:44

I'm a huge David Gilmour fan, and I don't really have one particular favorite. If I had to narrow it down, these would be the top 3 for me.

High Hopes - Live in Gdansk - Starts @ 5:08

Marooned - The Division Bell

Shine On You Crazy Diamond(Part 2) - Wish You Were Here - Starts @5:10

If you ever get to the end of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb and wish there was more guitar wailing action, just dove tail it in to Satriani's The Forgotten Part 2.

I'm not sure if it could be considered a solo, it's more of a harmony but I only noticed it with this great cover of Avenged Sevenfold's "Reminissions". Sounds awesome:

I'm So Afraid (Remastered): starts at 2:50. Gives me chills

I've been a classic rock guy my entire life, but for some reason I was completely unfamiliar with this particular track by Fleetwood Mac until maybe 6-7 years ago. Now, I was never into Fleetwood Mac at all, while growing up. I know a lot of their hits and I think some of those hits rock, but I was always shocked at how much praise they received. I just didn't think they were anything close to Zeppelin or The Eagles or Pink Floyd when it came to classic rock bands. Then I heard this song and lost my mind. Not only is it an absolutely fabulous song, but this guitar solo is in-fricken-credible.

These guys are from Argentina. Solo starts around the 2:20 mark. It is a short solo but you can see the guy plays incredible. It is a beautiful quirky song too.

Since we're on the topic of Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks had Waddy Wachtel preform with her in Chicago.
His opening solo is fantastic, and definitely up there in my favorite solos.

since we're on the topic of Stevie Nicks, this is my favorite song sung by her, always was. Solo at 3:00 Fleetwood Mac Sisters Of The Moon:

Joe Stump: Amazing down to earth guitar player with lot's of emotion for a shredder.

and this one from the early ninethies

Michael Lee Firkins! Just epic stuff

....It's a little sad that not a lot of "modern" stuff are mentioned here. Probably symptomatic of where rock in general is heading nowadays...

As for me, here's a song that has a killer solo (for me!!)

....Here's a couple of songs from a legendary Live At The Marquee album by Dream Theater.
They are both pretty lengthy, so buckle down, and hold on for your life!!

John Petrucci has a box of souls he's amassed over the years after being challenged to "shredding contests". His box includes the souls of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Jimi Hendrix, Randy Rhoads, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, and the Devil.

Definitely the solo (which becomes more or less a duet later on) in Nine Inch Nails live version of ''The day the whole world went away''. (Solo starting around 2:30)
But the whole song is absolutely brilliant, gives me goosebumps every time.

The guitar solo near the end of Raise Hell by Hed Pe. Really beautiful guitar solo to hear. I remember listening to this song when playing Dirt 3. Unfortunately because of the lyrics of the song being filled with profanity, I can't post the song. Yes it's tolerable if you post a video with a profanity warning but I don't think they would let anything that is 90% filled with profanity slide.
