Your PSN, why?

My name is a tribute to my pops.

First off my son bought me a PS4 after getting tired of watching my bang away on the clunky old PS3. Well just a week earlier I heard that my dad had a nickname in Spain, El Girasol (the sunflower-cuz he was tall and loved sunflowers). So since he was a racer and a car-builder, and my kid got me racing online, it was a layup to do a father-son thing. The L at the beginning is just a phonetic stand in for “el”

(Side note: I wish to Hell pops was still here so we could stay up late with me racing and him commenting on braking points, settings, competitors, etc. I always wonder what he would have thought of GTS)

In 2003, I was playing a mmorpg on PS2 called Everquest Online Adventures. I made a healer and named it Infineon (now called Sonoma Raceway). I thought it sounded cool while sharing my interest of NASCAR in the community. Stuck with that username ever since.

Mine's gonna be a little convoluted.

ThrasherDBS stands for "ThrasherDaBlackStang" which was my YouTube channel name when I started it in 2008. I wanted to be "Thrasher The Black Stallion", but the 20-character limit on channels had me shorten it to an exactly 20-character name.

The "Thrasher" bit came from when friends and I would play Burnout 3. We were 11 at the time and we each had a name for ourselves. My incredibly book-smart but socially awkward friend called himself "The Professor" and my edgy gangster-wannabe friend called himself "Prisoner 289". I ripped Thrasher off of the DJ from that game: Stryker... who is better known as a radio DJ for KROQ down in LA. And also, Thrasher just sounded cool to edgy, rock/metal enthused 11-year-old me.

The Black Stallion bit refers to my favorite car as a kid, a black Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R. I figured calling it a Stallion would make it sound like a "tougher/faster" Mustang. I don't think it'll ever be an actual SVT Cobra, but one day I hope I get to "defictionalize" it.

Back when I joined this site in 2009, I went by Irons. Because I noticed in most of the forums I frequented, there was usually a guy that was really knowledgeable and particularly witty and pithy that would post a lot and be generally a revered at best or controversial at worst user with a short simple name. (On this site, Famine comes to mind, and he's more in the "revered" end of the spectrum) I picked Irons because I wanted to be "that" guy, plus it also sounded like a tough guy's name. (I was 15, cut me some slack.) In 2013 or so, I figured this was a pretty silly reason to have a name like that, and just had Jordan deactivate that account so I could make this one with the mindset of: "Well, most everyone I know gaming-wise knows me by ThrasherDBS anyways, so I should probably just go by that on here."

Jesus, that made me think, I've got about 2 months until my 10-year anniversary on here. Time flies.

As a start let me tell you I never thought my driver name would ever be public. Was there internet at all back in 2007  ?

Despite hating my RL first name since the moment I could think I wanted it to be represented somehow, so I chose JOE as an international short ( of Joerg - my parents always told me it was cool in the days :odd: ) ...
while ROCKET came to me like song lyrics do. I liked that combination as it's got something to do with speed without being too serious to me :) !
1-61 is month and year of birth.

Today I'm actually proud wearing that name, I've got "RJ" on my license plate, I even made respective stickers once to pimp my RL car ( a Yaris ) for example :D !

Cipher came from Ace Combat: Zero's main silent protagonist. I added Alpha because Cipher's already taken and I don't want to be "Cipher145843209", and also because an alpha usually leads the pack, which is what I aim to do in races (yes very edgy 10/10)

My sister said "Cipher" sucks though and simple english words like Snow or Lightning sound way better, so here we are :]

Not sure how long ago it was, but i have had the same psn since we were first given the option to make one. As my signature says, it is pretty self explanatory i believe. As a young metalhead in my early 20's, my favorite bands were pantera, slayer, megadeth, and so on, and it was the coolest thing i could think of that i thought i would be able to live with forevermore.

Forum name here and just about everywere else is because i worked in a dairy (not a farm, a fluid milk processing plant) for 13+ years before they closed the doors, and since it was a good union (teamsters baby) job, i thought i would have it for life. Now i work in a brewery but after how many years, on how many forums, i aint changin it lol

On a related note, how is everyones’ PSN/GTP name pronounced? Obviously this doesn’t apply to everyone as some names are self explanatory, but for those who have names that could be pronounced in different ways or mispronounced by others, how is your name intended to be spoken?

For myself, it’s pronounced Pig-Gums. :)

I’m a member of a big golf site as well and I made a thread there one time just to ask this question. I’m glad I did too, because it turns out I was mispronouncing a LOT of people’s screen names.

Just my name with my birthday (sept 27) on the end, I had no ideas at the time and I just wanted to get online already. The 27 is also a little homage to Gilles Villeneuve (I know he also ran the #12, but I like 27 better ;))

Probably going to change it sooner or later, I got one in mind.

Earlier in this thread @VBR linked to a thread.....from 13 years ago.

Relative newbies like me often forget how long some others have been at this.

The Mods have allowed this thread to continue, & thinking about it some more it's different to the other one as you are specifically asking why people have a certain PSN, not just what it is.

👍

I can get with that.

I wish I could say I had some carbohydrate based origin story, but alas, I was an air cadet sergeant when I first joined Xbox Live in 2005 and I had just had a baguette for lunch. Wanted something original/unique that wasn’t complicated or full of mixed case and underscores so Sgt Breadstick was born. Managed to lock it out on PSN on my PSP so when I eventually moved to PS this gen it stuck!

The only thing the upsets me now though is when you google me you get some Truck Simulator person with either the same sense of humour or has pinched my name at some point, but I’m not particularly social outside of reddit so no harm I guess...

My PSN : nfs-p2k-TW

nfs_p2k => need for speed : Porsche 2000 (Need for Speed: Porsche Price)
I started playing online racing and started using that name, which was the craziest racing game I was playing at the time.

TW => My Country "Republic of China" ( Taiwan)
The flag of the "Republic of China" cannot be used because of the repression of the "People's Republic of China",
So in international organizations our country uses the Olympic flag (Chinese Taipei) to represent.
