GTPlanet’s Weekly Race Series Expands with New Events

GTPlanet’s Weekly Race Series (WRS) is the longest running online Time Trial competition dedicated to the Gran Turismo series. Having run continuously since its humble introduction in February of 2003, the WRS has been run for nearly 9 years and boasts 445 completed weekly time trials! For the first time in its long history, the WRS began hosting live, weekly online racing events shortly after the start of this year. Each week, participants from around the globe race against one another in live competitions organized by GTPlanet’s very own team of race administrators.

Interested in joining the fun?

The current week’s WRS Time trial can be found in this thread, and we’ll be running the online version of the event this coming Wednesday, January 25th. After this week’s event, we’ll pit interested participants against members of the ORCA series, one of the many race series currently running in GTPlanet’s Racing Series Forum.

You’ll need to be officially registered and placed in a division to take part.

If you are new to the series and the GTP Registry, feel free to introduce yourself to the WRS community.

If you’re interested in joining the GTP Registry to take advantage of the events we are offering, here’s what to do next:

STEP 1: Create a GTP_Tag PSN account

STEP 2: Run the GTP WRS Qualifier.

Have questions? Anything related to the qualifier can be discussed in this thread.

If you think you have what it takes, join us in the WRS forums!

Hmmm have to stay I am interested but if I set up a new psn tag will I have to start gt5 from scratch, won’t I be able to sign into new tag from old profile that I have loads of cars on etc? Also will I actually be competitive in seasonal time trials I can usually get in top 2500 and around top 1000 when its my preferred low powered light weight cars around short tracks? My other concern would be that I might sully the good name of gtp tag, of course I always try to race clean but sometimes the desire to win takes over and some ppl may get a tiny nudge :-/ a bit Lewis Hamilton like lol

    1. w-g-e

You will have to start GT5 from scratch but you can use your other account for anything other than WRS events. You can also gift cars to your other account. Personally I only use my GTP_w-g-e account but that’s mostly because I don’t use my other account for GT5. It’s up to you if you will be competitive in seasonal time trials.. a tag alone won’t make you any faster… hehe
Participating in WRS events is a great way to improve your driving skills though. I’ve been participating in the WRS for 1.5 year now and I’ve certainly improved my driving. I think it’s because of the diversity of the combo’s. Every week a totally different combonation and almost all tracks are used (except ovals).
You don’t have to worry about that last part you said too much. If such an accident happens in a race then you have to wait for that person to re-gain position as written in the GTP OLR rules.. If you do just that, then there’s nothing to worry about.
Good luck if you decide to join the WRS events.

I have only recently joined GTP WRS and did so before I had my broadband connection at home. The weekly time trials was my first real competition against people from around the world. If your internet is capable of uploading a 1mb file then you are able to officially compete with some of the best players from around the world. Everyone has been really good to talk with and are always free with their tips and setups.

One thing I don’t get is, why do you guys call it “Weekly Race Series” when it’s basically only a “Time Trail Challenge”?

Don’t cover the fact that GT5 have nothing to do with racing, at least “Online”. With all the online flaws (round time glitch, penalties for getting bumped, shortcutters, annoying ghost cars, …) it’s only a RageQuitExperience.

Meh, at least the “Pokemon” part (collecting & trading items and cars) of GT5 works. The only reason why I still daily start up the game. Sad, but that’s how it looks, PD. ;)

    1. WRP001

Do your research before you post and/or maybe you should just read the article you are commenting about first. The weekly racing series consists of *both* time trials and I quote: “live, weekly online racing events”.

There are plenty of great racing series hosted here at GTP that don’t have any of the issues you describe. You need to find a good group of drivers who don’t cut or drive aggressive so that penalties can be turned off and ghost cars are not an issue. If someone doesn’t conform to the rules just penalize them and suspend them if they can’t follow the rules.

Say what you want but we’ve held over 40 online live races and everyone one of them was a “real racing experience” and there are many other series organized on the GTPlanet forums that have an even longer history than that.

Oooo ouch ZeGermanBastorD, now you know to read twice next time… But then again, noone never reads first nowadays and just skips to commenting whatever they have to say…tisk tisk…..

    3. Sphinx

      ZeGermanBastorD,
To understand the naming of the series you need to have a slight knowledge of how things were done over a decade ago and also the terminology used during that period. Back then any event/series/challenge that used communications via the Internet in order to compete was termed OLR (OnLineRacing). This was all before OLR proper as we know today.

All I know about the GTP tag is when I race against someone with one I know I’m in for clean and competitive racing. The tag is a badge, wear it with honor. Next time you race against one of them take note and you’ll see what I mean.

    1. granddriver

You must not race much online. By NO means does GTP_name mean they will be a good racer. About 50% of the time they are good. IMO

    2. WRP001

I just happen to race online a lot. You could join the series and find out for yourself, but of course you’ll need a GTP tag and be on the registry to participate. LOL.

    3. esh

I can’t count how many times I’ve gotten positive comments about the GTP tag in my PSN. Being that the WRS and the GTP tag is a way to represent the site, I take my presence online very seriously, however hokey it may seem. I can understand that there are varying levels of skill/sportsmanship throughout the WRS registry but from what I’ve experienced in my 4+ years @ GTPlanet it is more than just a name.

    4. poolhaas

@ granddriver: He said clean and competitive. Not everyone in GTP is a top notch racer. I can put in some good laps but in an online race I usually end up somewhere back of the pack but I always keep it clean.

    1. mcfizzle

It takes literally 20 minutes to create a profile and level up to run the qualifier. Is that 20 minutes really keeping you from joining the registry? If it is, that is fine, but you are only hurting yourself. Once you are in, money is never a problem because we have our own list of widget runners to keep your pockets full so you can purchase any cars or parts you need. You could run only the weekly events and not do anything else with that profile if you didn’t want to. Take the time to register, you won’t regret it.

    2. lilmann73

      mcfizzle:
It’s not that people don’t have the time to make another account, it’s that when we do, it is completely new. We don’t have any cars, money, or anything that we do on an account we actually use. It will take quite a while to get all of our stuff back on a new account.

    3. poolhaas

If it’s such a big deal to make a GTP account, then just go offline on your original account and change that name to GTP_username. Then all your replays will be saved under that name. And concerns about not having any cars is no problem either, some combos are in arcade mode and you can share the other cars with your original account. I’m going to get back to competing next week, it’s been too long ;).

    4. GTD

If Polyphony amended their game, this could be possible.

Forza 4 have ‘Clubs’ which then automatically prefixes your gamertag with the club ID once you have been made a member. Obviously to get the club prefix you would have to join and be authorised by the club moderator. Works great in Forza 4 and doesn’t need you to create an additional unwanted gamertag.

    5. mcfizzle

      @lilmann73

I understand that concern but it’s really not a problem. I have 2 profiles. My main profile with all my game progress and every car, and then my GTP_ account. Money is never a problem on the GTP_account because of widget runners and I only need to buy 1 car a week, and that’s only if it isn’t an arcade mode time trial. That profile is used only for WRS online and offline events. If I remeber correctly, only a couple times has the car that was being used cost over a million credits. If it is over they usually give us advanced warning to save up and purchase it. All in all it really takes very little effort to run two different accounts. It is definitely worth it for all that I have gotten out of the series.

    6. EDK

We honestly don’t want people in our competitions if they can’t be bothered to put forth the small effort and commitment of making their GTP_Tag account. We have a very large and (clearly) very loyal base of members.

    7. BWX

+1 to losing stupid tag. I’ve got one GT5 account with over 36,000 miles driven and over 1200 cars. I’m not going to start another GT5 account just to try out a race series. It has absolutely nothing to do with ”being bothered to put forth the small effort and commitment of making their GTP_Tag account”. It’s a stupid rule and I don’t follow stupid rules, so your loss.

    8. jimantonic

      To all WRS/OLR admin/staff,
I honestly think we should abandon ALL rules and tag requirements so we can have BWX join, as I’m sure you will all agree, it’s our loss, and once he joins, all of our lives will be complete and we will all be able to sleep at night, as I for one have not slept in years worrying about the fact that BWX doesn’t take part in the WRS.
      Yours sincerely,
      concerned GTP_ tag holder.

    9. BWX

@jimantonic It’s not their loss because of me, it’s their loss because of ALL the people who would otherwise take part. Don’t be such a dork.

  7. mcfizzle

    Great article EDK,

I love the WRS and it’s even better now that it’s Time Trials and online events based on those events. They have really extended the life of GT5 for me while at the same time I’ve gotten to know some great people. The combos you come up with always amaze me and have allowed me to find some gems that I may otherwise have never driven.

If you are on the fence about joining, stop thinking about it and register. It takes very little time to start up, especially with seasonals. You wil not regret it.

Thanks again to the admins for your tireless work,

    GTP_mcfizzle

    1. jimantonic

A GTP_ tag is required to take part, it’s easily done.
Even if it’s only the online racing you wish to take part in and not the weekly time trial, just run the qualifier and as long as you submit a clean time (not going off track/wall contacts etc.) you will be assigned to a division, however if you fancy giving the time trial element a go, give the qualifier a decent go and see how you stack up against some of the fastest GT5’ers in the world.

    2. WRP001

Even if you only want to run the online events it’s still a good idea to give the qualifier a decent effort. The online events sometimes use your division and/or handicap to determine your bracket, etc. You can decide for yourself what ‘decent effort’ means.
