We all remember Fishermans Ranch dirt track, don’t we? Doubtlessly it was one of the main highlights this past August at Gamescom, as Polyphony gave a name to one of the dirt tracks set to appear in GT Sport. Being part of the series since the earliest days, this racing domain will play an important role in GT Sport’s diversity. Therefore, we’re happy to share the new gameplay footage recorded during 2016 Warsaw Gaming Week by MotoGamesTV.
As in the previous video seen this summer, the main star of the show is the Subaru WRX Gr.B Rally Car. It takes almost three and a half minutes to lap the track, despite the car’s obvious raw power. Although the presentation doesn’t offer anything new we haven’t seen previously, we can get a better idea of the technical aspects thanks to the increased quality of the recording. As usual, off-screen gameplay makes it almost impossible to get a bead on the audio side of things; to judge that aspect of the game we’ll have to wait a bit longer.
If you would like to check other GT Sport gameplay videos recorded recently, we’ve looked at both the Hyundai Genesis Gr.3 at Tokyo Expressway and Alfa Romeo 4C at Brands Hatch recently. Looking to test-drive the game yourself? You may get the chance this month at Paris Motor Show, Paris Games Week, and Riyadh Gamer’s Day. You can get all the info on those events from this article.
Thanks to TayeezSA for sharing the video.

I used to be a fan of GranTurismo, they lost me with all lies about upgraded physics, tracks, cars, weather….
Or the promisse for GT6, we where supposed to get a new track every month, remember?
Besides theyr offroad physics are worth nothing the worst in all sim racers.
I will rather keep on playing Dirt Rally…
PD has no clue how to build proper rally tracks and rally cross tracks. Looks like a highway with sand wallpaper on the ground. And static orange tape fences like they did in GT4 already? LOL It´s 2016…hellooooo
I have rfactor 2, Assetto Corsa, RaceRoom, Project Cars, Forza 6 Apex … But GT is still the only game I’m really interested in. Why ???
indeed, why???
I know the feeling. It’s weird and difficult to explain. But something about GT, in spite of its short comings; just feels right. Like the only remedy is to add the features found in other games, into GT.
still that awful hand animation…sigh
I still believe this can be good.
– It’s wide enough for overtaking and 16-20 cars fighting for the same piece of road, which, for obvious reasons, normal rallying, which seems unlikely to happen, offline or online, doesn’t normally have to consider.
– Track feels like it could have a Finland-ish feel to it, being very fast and with a few jumps thrown in for good measure and some camber straight out of New Zealand in places.
– Scenery feels like it could be a Mexico/Greece/Safari hybrid (i.e.generally bland) with some green bits on top.
– Not every stage, or rally for that matter, has a water splash.
– Not every stage goes over or near a mountain.
– Not every stage passes through a village.
– Not every stage has a bridge.
– Not every stage is set in a forest.
– Not every stage is mixed surface.
I’ll admit, indestructible tape fences are a bit old, but it’s either that or being magically teleported back to the middle of the road the moment you even think of having an off.
Sometimes I wonder if I’m the sane one or the crazy one.
I agree with all of your “not every stage” points. But one or more of each track type would be nice, to which GT has had NONE for a long while now. The opposite is also true that more rally tracks are narrow, and “not every stage” IRL is wide, dusty, bland, and lacking of unique terrain qualities that cause rare and unexpected racing conditions.
Also staggered starts with time markers would handle the larger player count on narrow courses. And a 5 second no-contact timer for players respawning from a wreck or moving under race speeds would handle collision issues. Worked fine in the Dirt Series, even if they were more arcade centric at times.
I’ll be fine with GTS if it turns out that “Not every stage” has the features I’ve listed so long as “Some of the stages” do.
Also, the ideal “narrow” track areas should be smooth, worn in, with a bit of grace room in select spots (The ‘Green’ Area).
The bleed off can be brush, shrubs, light tree line, cliff face, gutter, etc. that can slow you down or severely mess you up, but if skillfully navigated, you can recover from. You can also use these areas as passing opportunities for overzealous opponents that take the bait there (Yellow areas).
The severe areas that require respawning will first sit you there for 2-3 seconds, then respawn you to the track where you’re transparent and unable to make contact for 3-5 seconds. That way, others aren’t penalized for your mistakes and vice versa (just because the guy in front of you hit a tape or ire wall, doesn’t mean everyone who took the turn correctly should suffer as well and run into his vehicle which was forcefully kept on the track (Red Areas).
Let the tape, tire walls, bleed off areas, etc. do what they’re supposed to and allow cars to be cushioned and absorb the impact as they leave the track. And yes, Rally is known for its treacherous conditions, so a respawn is a courtesy to what should; in all likelihood, actually end your race entirely.
And if it’s not obvious, Red Areas = exceedingly off track areas, lakes/larger bodies of water, un-scalable trackside ledges, bridges, gutters, deep brush, tree-line, etc., and cliffsides.
If you’ve ever had a 16 player race on a dirt track in GT6, then you’d know that these types of tracks can actually be quite fun.
Too wide.
No body roll, chassis twisting, tread trails/mud grooves, or fear of roll over.
Same compacted dry dirt effect (always sliding and thick dust clouds).
No pools of water, hydroplaning, mud kicking, treacherous narrow trails, bridges, DENSELY wooded areas, villages, point to point, mountain passes, rivers/rivines, gravel/asphalt/tarmac/ice/mud/dirt terrain changes, etc.
Non-dynamic, indestructible trackside caution tape and barriers.
Ugh…
Rally has always been the one major area in Gran Turismo that I’ve wanted them to improve on. I seriously hope they’re seeing this and taking it into consideration. These type of tracks seriously lack character and aren’t impressive to me.
Save the headache – wait for the game to be released :)
Oh, this looks pretty good to me, hope we’ll see some more variety of races like nascar and maybe some serious kart racing :D That’d be cool.
I wonder if we will have a course creator, and how it will turn out. This is an interesting track!
I never enjoyed rally in GT series too much. But, in GT5, those rallys with SS stages was actually fun. Too bad it didn’t make forward on the series.
Same strange, wide, custom-made tracks (Is it Rally? Or Rallycross? Who knows?). Same bland mostly flat baked dirt surface, same (lack of) grip model (drive in a straight line or slide, nothing in between), same supernaturally hard plastic fences and tape. Same issues, just prettier.
Was just about to post the exact same thing! Unrealistically wide tracks, bouncing off invisible barriers, no change since GT2. Same old same old. This game is not for me anymore.
Absolutely loved GT4, in my humble opinion this is still the best GT game to date. Series has really gone down hill imo. Had both GT5 & 6 but switched to XBOX & Forza when I moved to the current gen of consoles. Can honestly say that I have never regretted it.
Obelisk, What do you consider NICE about this? It’s stale, unoriginal, bland, has pop up on trees (seriously?) , has concrete nets… This is PS4, and we are almost in 2017. This is weak.
Let’s see here…
1. The user interface is clean. It’s easy to understand.
2. The track itself looks great. It’s also wider than PD’s previous efforts, which is a good touch. Toscana in GT6 was too narrow in some places.
3. A subtle one that I don’t think you saw – the physics have improved. The Subaru in the video took a relatively light hit on landing (0:55) and didn’t freak out like they did in GT6.
4. It looks like it’s a lot easier to recover from over-steer on dirt compared to GT6. In GT6, oversteering was problematic because the car would fishtail wildly if you corrected it.
And regarding the trees: I watched the whole video and didn’t notice any texture pop-ins. That gripe is merely a nit-pick, it seems.
How is GT: Sports stale, unoriginal, bland? It’s a spin-off that has different features and different mechanics. It’s like calling Horizon 3 unoriginal and bland when it isn’t.
@Obelisk – the major complaint with most of PD’s rally tracks is that they’re too wide. How is making it even wider a good thing?
Also, judging physics off a video like this is a folly. Physics are judged by experience.
Kyle, it’s because the cars slide around so much. Having a bit more room to work with could spell the difference between a clean race and a red flag, especially considering the sportsmanship rating being implemented.
You are right about the physics.
You guys should really watch some Rally/Rally cross videos and montages to see what proper Rally is supposed to look like.
I know what actual rally looks like. The width of the road can vary wildly.
You guys should stop measuring this against rally or even rally cross circuits. It is neither. This is PD”s version of a dirt circuit made for racing not timed stages.
I’ve never seen any Rally courses as wide as the PD created ones. But JP is correct, there’s were purpose created for racing. But the wideness reduces the challenge factor of the courses. And wide open areas with minimal objects, lessen the sense of speed and danger which are aspects that increase excitement and fun factor.
1000 mph in a blank white space would be boring, as you have no reference points to assess your speed. Racing in big open areas have a similar effect.
So many of the vocal minority in these comments…can’t someone say something NICE about this?
What is there to say, really? It looks unbelievably boring.
Have to agree with MXH and all of the other hard critics on here, and I’m a GT fan for life. I’ll reiterate what everyone else here is saying: it’s not rally but not rallycross. Awful, constant sliding on utterly boring, overly-wide course. No parallels with reality in any way. There’s no chance I’d ever choke down a full lap of this unless I had to (some sort of career event required to progress.) Really confusing that they would continue with rally in this form.
It is still pretty early in development, considering PD simply LOVES to take their time, so I’ll wait for some more detailed videos to have a clear opinion for. But so far it seems pretty good, ‘least we’ll have some variety, it’ll liven up the e-sports racing in general.
@KingLich I find it hard to believe that the next GT is still “early in development”. Considering work started on the “next GT” shortly after GT6 was released and also the fact they even considered releasing the game this year before it was set back to 2017+.
Definitely not early in development considering that the release date was a month away, up until a month ago or so.
Not impressed. Fantasy cars don’t do it for me. Sorry PD. Up your game or give up. Simple as.
I saw no fantasy car there…
I guess to drive a subaru impreza rally car would be a fantasy :D
Since when did Subaru have a Group B rally car? Lancia, Ford, Peugeot, Audi, yes indeed. Subaru? Not to my knowledge.
Who said anything about Group B? WRX GR.B is a wide-body turbo designation.
The car doesn’t race anywhere in the world with the specifications shown in that video. That makes it a fictional race car even if it’s based on a real car.
I really do like these fictional race versions of cars, but I really hope they are adding some more real ones as well.
That is stretching the point a bit. I’d say it looks like Ryan misread and thought the car was a Group B.
the circuit is nice but is too long … I wish they added much smaller circuits but with more elements on screen … on this beyond the vegetation has not much … more than a ranch looks like a desert!
Rally tends to be lengthy, even if it’s a circuit it definitely is more rally than RallyX in approach.
Seeing this video.. There’s only one thing that’s coming to my mind…. SEGA RALLY….
In 2016 this is a huge NOPE. Looks like the same thing from GT2 on. No meaning to exist anymore.
I lost interest in GT Sport a long time ago, and this is why. They are not making it as amazing as they promised. I have a small feeling that Gran Turismo is going downhill and won’t last long. I do enjoy the series, I have 1-6 and GT PSP, but I don’t think Sport will be as good.
Graphics are good but this car has 6 windows, I get more light in my car at midnight from the moon.
Still unbreakable plastic barriers (and invisible barriers). in 2016.
Looks boring as hell… Everything looks really static, it’s been the same since GT1, just each game gets sharper…
How can PD look at videos of real rallye racing, create this circuit, and say “yes, this is -perfect-“?
I wonder the exact same thing…
The obvious answer is that they likely aren’t viewing footage of real rallye racing at all.
It looks pretty, but it’s neither rallycross nor a proper rally stage. At least imo the rally in gt has never been very captivating nor realistic.
Those concrete nets…
Sorry but how can we still be seeing pop up on a pretty simple rally stage, on a PS4, in 2016?
PD really need to iron out these things – really breaks the imersion.
Looking good! I hope I get a PS4 by the time this releases
I’m hoping my PS4 isn’t obsolete by the time this releases.
