With the doors set to open at the Koelnmesse in Cologne in only two days (three for the general public), Polyphony has revealed its plans for the event. Leading the charge is a newly-released video detailing Kazunori Yamauchi’s exploits at the Nürburgring 24H race earlier this year behind the wheel of the Walkenhorst BMW M6 GT3.
“Made From Reality” takes us behind the scenes of the event, and the immense levels of preparation that goes into an attack on the Green Hell. While the video is light on details relating to GT Sport, it nonetheless offers a fascinating look at the team dynamic in the Walkenhorst garage. Kazunori believes the M6 ran the race with more sensors than any other car, as the team would glean info from real-time to feed directly into the game.
Of particular note is the glowing statements about night driving. Yamauchi’s co-drivers discuss how the fans bring the circuits to life at night via lights and flares. Matias Henkola, co-driver of the #101 PlayStation car, says “the things that you see out of the windscreen, it’s like out of a movie.” With night racing yet to be seen in GT Sport, we’re curious to see how this unique atmosphere will be captured in-game.
Henkola also calls Yamauchi one of his “childhood heroes”, recounting how he played the first game for hours on end when it first released almost two decades ago. Last month, he outed the M6 GT3 as one of the cars included in GT Sport, and this video confirms the car is indeed in, with a demonstration playing behind Kazunori as early as 0:37 in the video (hat tip to Nico_Ble99 for first catching it).
Polyphony will be bringing 15 GT Sport gaming stations to Cologne, lining a large recreation of the Nürburgring’s famous Caracciola-Karussell corner. The Green Hell will be available for players to drive in-game, while Kazunori’s real-world racer will be on display for gamers to inspect up close. It isn’t clear if the big BMW will be drivable in GT Sport for the public, however.
Gamescom opens this Wednesday for the media, before accepting the public from Thursday through Sunday. Stay tuned for more news as the event unfolds, and keep an eye on our GT Sport sub-forum for the latest developments.

Hmm I expected I would see M6 GT3 in GTS at the end of the video, but actually not. What is the purpose of this video, Kaz? Give me back the time I spent watching the video.
M6 will probably be the cover car on one of the many covers GT Sport will have. Now this talk about what drivers experience at night sounds like GT Sport will let you select night time as well, still miffed about it not being dynamic like Gt 5 and 6, but I hope fine tuning along the way allows them to allow it possibly on the Neo(which I’m buying the instant it’s available). I remember playing GT 5 and watching sparks fly as the car ahead of me bottomed out, I was like wtf…did they actually program that in the game? After watching how sexy water spray looks when cars kick it up and the wind takes, I would probably lose it if I saw that in GT Sport. That stuff is computationally expensive though, but accurate modeling of wind and the bernoulli effect would be a step in the right direction though, especially for Nascar close pack racing.
Hmmm, they mention rain and night driving quite prominently there…
Getting my hopes up for some cool effects.
(oh, how foolish to get hopes up with GT!)
I hope that not only this racing version of the M6, but also the regular/street car ends up in GT Sport.
All the concepts for Vision GT are cool, but I usually enjoy driving the regular cars more in Gran Turismo and want all kinds of street cars (Cadillac ATS/V, CTS/V, BMW 5 series/M5, BMW 3 series, Mercedes Benz C, E and S class…etc) to be featured in Gran Turismo.
And it goes without saying that Porsche coming to GT would be amazing.
beautiful images! Absolutely love those time-lapse and slowmo’s although it may have been a bit to much slowmo shots. anyway I can really really enjoy this!
Nice enough little film. Anyone notice how similar Max Aul sounds to Seb Vettel? Anyway, Kaz, those engine sounds in this video? That’s how race cars sound, and how they should sound in a video game.
Great Video but people on GTP complain about everything
Welcome to ComplainPlanet!
I’ve played GT6…now I’m playing Forza 6 and as far as I’m concerned, they should concentrate on getting back on par with Forza because they are lacking behind them and several others like Project Cars and such.
So less documentary, more game dev…
Same here. Played GT6 a lot and was frustrated with its lacking game design and other poor features. Was tempted by T10’s offerings for years now; finally purchased an Xbox One for Forza 6 and this game is miles better than GT6 and probably the best racing game I’ve played in at least 10 years; far, far better than anything PD released since the PS3 came out. PD has simply lost the magic and so far GTS looks just the same as GT5 and GT6. It’s got cars and tracks but otherwise the same lack of excitement GT has had on the PS3. Something needs to change if GT is going to remain relevant beyond its cash cow brand image…
I doubt the coders, the sound techs and the whatnot who are developing GT had much focus on this short doc. And by now it should be plain to see that Kaz has a vision. GT is a major part of that vision, but not 100% of that vision. Or maybe it is 100%. GT6 could have been better on a few aspects, you are correct about that.
@conquerer. Well, I would HOPE that game you talk of is “miles better!” I mean, you’re only comparing a game that’s 3 years newer on a console that’s got almost 6 years on the PS3.
Newer =/= better. Lots of people think PD peaked with GT3/4 and it’s been downhill since then. It’s more about overall game design and less about graphical power for many people and good game design is ageless.
The time difference (less than 2 years actually) is not what made the difference, nor the platform. Remember the three years between GT5 and GT6 didn’t lead to much advancement at all beyond cars and tracks.
@johnnypenso, while I agree with your sentiment if it relates to normal videogames, for driving games, for me, it’s actually nearly the opposite. ‘Graphical’ power and physics and suchlike are what makes driving consistently better, more immersive, more believable, as the tech improves. ‘Gameplay’, it could be argued, is becoming increasingly irrelevant. If I have a good car on a good track, I don’t need arbitrary ‘gameplay’ goals to make it any more thrilling and addictive. On a general note, and I’ve said it before, but what gameplay does a racing driver have, other than the points table?
I don’t really see the point of this video. It could serve some promotional purpose for Team Walkenhorst, for the M6 GT3 or for the 24h of the Nurburgring. But for GT:S at Gamescom?
GT sport is going to be a game changer in my opinion.
If everything is executed correctly, I can agree with that statement.
That pic of #101 … is FULL of mysteriousity X)
It is like a silhouette of a monstrous ( not referring to RR ) racing machine X)
That picture is worth a million words ^^
Ugh, show NEW stuff please.
This person’s pride is too big. After a movie about Kaz himself, now a movie about his races.
Sure he deserves all of that, GT6 best fail of the series.
What movie about his races? It’s an 18 minute video.
OK. Now go play forza.
Kaz made a huge impact on the auto industry mate.
No I’ve AC. 18 minutes or not it’s still a documentary about Kaz.
They’ve made the same documentary last year. It’s about their experience in Nurburgring 24 hour. Not sure what’s wrong with it, every racing team has their own video about their race in Nurburgring.
Considering he is the man behind the worlds’ most famous driving simulation game, you sound as if you are a little green friend. No movie here, it’s a video about the entire team. This shows that you have ought against Kazunori for no good reason, considering he and you have never met and he owes you nothing. He’s a human like you, doing a job and also living his life and it so happens that some people see him as someone to look up to as he’s living a dream like life.
