The one and only U.S. GT Academy 2012 wildcard event is taking place today, Thursday, July 12, in San Diego, California! The winner, who will be known as “Racer X”, will take home the custom HumanRacing GT Chassis pictured above and join the top 32 U.S. contestants in the finals this weekend for a chance to go to Silverstone.
The event is open to the public (so long as you meet the contest’s eligibility requirements), and will be held at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego from 10:00am to 4:00pm Pacific Time, right across the street from Comic-Con 2012. Lines are expected to be long, so serious competitors should be sure to come early.
Many GTPlanet community members are coming to the event from all over the country; if you’re planning to go, head over to our GT Academy forum to meet-up with other hardcore fans (there’s even a karting after-party in the works!).
The actual finals will be live-streamed on IGN and here on GTPlanet, with full coverage and commentary from myself and IGN Pro League host Kevin Knocke. The broadcast kicks off this Friday, July 13, at 17:30 GMT/UTC (convert this to your local time). Stay tuned!

What use is Racer X without Speed Racer?
Living in SoCal, I got a chance to attend the Racer X Challenge and it was a great experience. I met some of the coolest people who traveled from as far as North Carolina, Virginia, Boston, Las Vegas and Huntington Beach, CA. I didn’t manage to make it to the leader board, but I did like the Human Racing rig. They had it dialed in after the first go around. The pedals seemed to teeder a bit under harsh braking, but overall a nice rig. Seeing first hand Racer X crossing the line with the fastest time of the day and hearing the cheers from his competitors just showed the comradery of racers. Practice, practice, practice. Thanks Nissan, Sony and IGN for a great event!
That rig is more ”form over function”.No recline adjustment, no adjustment for length in between pedal plate and wheel deck (important), no shifter mount? At least I don’t see it. Looks like very limited wheel height adjustment, and flimsy way to connect wheel to rig. It looks kinda cool but that’s all. I’d sell the rig and keep mine.. Sell the wheel and buy a Fanatec Club Sport Wheel and GT rim.
I’m no expert on the subject(sounds like you know your stuff), I still attach my wheel to a table, but this thing looks pretty good to me.
Yeah I’m sure it’s functional and looks to be very high quality, I just meant it’s not very adjustable from what I can see. It looks expensive though.
Good luck everyone ……
What he said
That’s one gorgeous rig.
I wanted to go but it was a 12hr drive and would have cost over 300 bukz counting gas, camping fees, and food for maybe a couple rolls of the dice. Just to much of a sacrafice but a great deal for anyone who is lucky enough to live near there. Go GTPerz
Man…the west coast really does get everything before the east. (In America at least)
Where is the H-shifter?..
Was just about to post something about that… Just a little fyi the shifter does not come with that wheel it you have to pay another $150 for it… So whoever wins will just have to pay another 150 instead of the price of the wheel and then pay for the shifter… So until then you only have a paddle shifter and no actual clutch…
Are you joking? I think the only way would ever get one would be if I won it.
That HumanRacing GT seat looks sexy. I want one!!
good luck everybody who goes. i won’t, i’m across the country haha
Yeah, I’m in a similar situation, but good luck to those who do manage to take part. ; )
