Sony Confirms Polyphony Presence at PlayStation Experience 2016

Sony’s big end-of-year event is fast approaching. The PlayStation Experience, held December 3 and 4 in Anaheim, California, is a rare opportunity for gamers to go hands-on with a wide collection of the company’s offerings and hear from the developers. This year, the list of 60+ studios includes Polyphony Digital.

Posted on the Official PlayStation Blog yesterday, the nearly-final list not only includes the Gran Turismo developers, but heavy hitters such as Naughty Dog, EA, and Capcom. While there will undoubtedly be a focus on PSVR and the recently-released PS4 Pro, the presence of so many big-name developers points to this year’s Experience being a far different beast than last years largely indie-oriented one.

It remains to be seen what Polyphony has in store. GT Sport was originally pencilled in for a release next week before being pushed back to some point in 2017. The studio’s silence was broken earlier this month however, when Kazunori took to the stage in London to show off the game’s VR and Pro capabilities for the first time.

This will mark one of the few times the game has been playable for US fans. Our man Jordan got his hands on a build at SEMA last week and came away impressed with the “really fun” Fishermans Ranch rally track.

If both the new uber-PS4 and standard console are present, it could give us our first opportunity to get a clearer view of what changes exist between the platforms. Who knows, maybe we’ll even see some night racing?

PlayStation Experience takes place December 3–4 in Anaheim, California. Looking to grab tickets? They’re still available here.

Boy, are the usual crowd being vocal. Pretty much what I expected after taking a hiatus away from gaming and game board crawling for a while. Other than exploring a galaxy which I’ll be squeezing in between music work shortly.

People should approach GT Sport as a blank slate, and not expect the usual laundry list of things that come with a normal Gran Turismo game, like a single player “career” mode or a Course Maker. Lobbying for their inclusion is all well and good, and I’m all about asking for goodies myself. But don’t expect this to be a GT7 with fewer cars. A single player mode, or at least an Event Maker, is more likely than a Course Maker.

This really is a motorsports and eSports focused game, so the usual philosophy we expect in building a GT game isn’t in play here. So look for the elements you’d expect to see in a racing sim. This is what a number of us have been lobbying for, me included, the GT Pro sim mode Kaz dreamed about back in the days of GT5 and 6. We expected it to be a separate mode within GT7, so we were caught off guard as much as everyone else. But take heart in the knowledge that you aren’t getting another GT5 Prologue. The game will feature racing from Miata sports cars to LeMans Prototypes and lots of stuff in-between. Now if they could wedgie in GT4 Class racing machines, I’d be in racing heaven.

I’m totally with you guys in wanting lots of other things to do than the racing sim stuff. I’m hoping to see those online club and league building tools I’ve been harping for since GT5 days. I want a nice offline single player game, or “at least” an Event Maker which will let me create an entire league based racing season with special events and a championship if I want, which would be far better. Many of us want to see DLC, paid for if necessary, and not just more cars and tracks but decals, vinyls and even game features to expand GT Sport, though I insist it has to be seamless so it incorporates into all aspects of the game flawlesly. I want to see something like an Auction House or Store Front a la Forza which would allow talented car artists to make liveries and sell them using in-game currency. I’d love to see a car modding system which would turn the street cars into SCCA or GT4-like racing machines, and a Course Maker, Movie Maker maybe, but those sorts of things will most likely have to wait for GT7. A lot of people want a release date, but I say, don’t say anything till they’re 100% sure of it.

If it ends up like something between Project CARS and RaceRoom or Assetto Corsa, it should make almost everyone happy and be a smashing success.

This is all fine and dandy, but what about course maker?

Will we need a tablet again or only supercomputers need apply? I mean they went through the whole trouble of making that app and forcing us to use a tablet to further enjoy the game with that feature. And released it so late into GT6’s life that one has to wonder if they’re going to scrap it once they scrap online support for GT6 like they did for GT5… Or if they are going to port that function to GT: SPORT … Will there be new environments or recycled ones? I need answers! I need Touge!

I would like to see a stock car to go with the oval. Seeing GT3 cars on that track just looks so unnatural. Pcars gave us a stock car with no oval and so far it looks like PD is giving us an oval with no stock car.

Well, it’s time to show something new Kaz while you can. I was hoping for the Genki Racing Project to be in there, but will be checking on both companies.

I could not agree more! I for one and pretty fed-up with seeing the same content. Circuit de la Sarthe must appear in order to put my mind at ease.
