it contains Java code for a series of games. . that & windows decided to read the code as instruction making it read everything on a network that locked up the PC. It is a real screenshot but i have'nt gotten to the bottom of it yet. Computers are always giving me interesting things to do

I've currently got 720Gb - 2 200Gb drives and 2 160Gb drives. I'm only using about 200Gb at the moment, but I'm sure it'll fill up with all sorts of crap.
I used to have an old 110Mb hard drive lying around that I'd originally bought for my Amiga1200.

my hdd could beat yours in a fight...
i call it 'titan the mighty'...
(note the standard desktop hdd beside it for scale)...
also check out the 230vac motor required to turn the platters..
oh and btw, hermetic seals are for whimps...
also, i am thinking of sticking it on ebay....any takers?

One 20GB HD for Windows and applications (about 90% full).
A 60GB HD for My Documents and MP3s (about 75% full).
A 8GB HD on the laptop (about 10% full).
I have 15 GB hard drive at work (about 15-20% full, although I'll never fill it up...it's work)...and a 128MB Lexar USB thumb drive to move the contents!
It's time for more storage space; but I'll likely wait until I need an entirely new computer.

i found the bug that produced the screenshot in post #124 .
XP has localization codes for competing systems in different languages at boot. Thus the system 'hangs-on' to a Character set, even if you turn it off or change the localization at the desktop interface.
w/ a character set such as chinese simplified the system can read into bytecode things that are'nt there. it corrupts the reading of object code which can lead to accidental writes

i initated a search on the drive, a local & also removable one, when it returned anomalies i requested properties of the object as viewed by windows & that is the screenshot.
this has left permanent damage on the Dir metadata; i can't delete until i reformat
, which will be next week . .
even now, if i try & search these folders they give varying & incredible results, but it's merely an annoyance.

That thing is crazy!!!!!! its like the size of the whole desk..... it must sound like a jet engine when its spinning, can you just plug it into a normal computer like with IDE?
..... I could see someone buying it on ebay and turning it into a cool coffee table or something!

well i wish i could power it up, it is made by IBM purely a large scale prototype, must be worth something. Circa 1970. Experts guessed its capacity @ 1Mb. The largest and smallest drves i have ever seen. i have been trying for 4 years to get the interface working. I have managened some basic functions under qbasic in Win98.
i have set a challenge to at least get the seek heads working but any retreval or storage of data will be impossible as the casing isnt air tight and the magnetic intergry of the platter will be compromised.

Haha! It was probably state of the art cutting-edge technology when it was made, but it's funny to think that you can pick up a 300Gb hard drive with a capacity 300,000 times greater, at a fraction of the size and for a price that the average person can easily afford, whereas that 1Mb monstrosity probably cost a small fortune to research and build. I don't know the speed of that drive, but no doubt current drives are probably hundreds of times faster.TurboSmoke
But we shouldn't laugh... They'll be laughing at our 200Gb SATA II hard drives in a few years.

laugh if you want but thats the nature of technology...advancement is the name of the game. The drive is a research and development prototype, never meant to be put into service as such. I love it. It actually belongs to the company i work for and not me personally. My department may be shutting down after the summer and i'll have to look for a new job. I am going to ask if i can have it and sell it on ebay...

Amd in the process of funding upgrade of the 8 500Gb drives to either 1, 1.5 or 2Gb drives....
So much HD Material, so little disk space :-/
[Edit:] This is just the main server, serving Domain, email, music, movies etc. - not counting the rest of the boxes this time...

My laptop at home has an 80Gb internal and the 500Gb external is either connected to it or the PS3.
The other laptop has a 120Gb, S3 Tivo - 250Gb, S2 Tivo - 40Gb, PS3 - 80, PS2 - 160Gb, kids desktop - 7Gb & 4Gb.
Total, albeit not all accessible (thus defeating the purpose) - 1.2Tb, not formatted.
My laptop at home has an 80Gb internal and the 500Gb external is either connected to it or the PS3.
The other laptop has a 120Gb, S3 Tivo - 250Gb, S2 Tivo - 40Gb, PS3 - 80, PS2 - 160Gb, kids desktop - 7Gb & 4Gb.
Total, albeit not all accessible (thus defeating the purpose) - 1.2Tb, not formatted.
