If you play games or install lots of stuff it will be slower than the 7,400rpm drive. (as I have a 40gb 5400rpm drive and I sometimes use the 80gb 7,200rpm drive)
If you do smaller tasks it isn't that much difference, it's only when you really demand alot out of it. For example "File Splitting".
I've been thinking. Games only access the drive for virtual memory, no? Couldn't I just move the page file over to the 80GB (assuming that I do switch the drives around), thus the games would be accessing the faster drive?

Or am I completely off the mark here?

Depends on the game, but most games read from the hard drive periodically. They have to load new textures or map levels. Things such as that. Because it's not a continuous read, but rather lots of short burst reads from different locations on the drive you will want a drive that can seek the fastest. Generally speaking seek speed is increased by spindle speed, or RPM of the drive. So the faster spinning drive would perform MUCH better than the slower one.

Additionally, faster spinning drives usually have more cache as well. That's a VERY good thing in all situations.

what do you mean cluless?! I think you shouldn't comment. I admitt As of now I havnt experimented with liquid cooling or SLI cards (because they are out of my budget) but it does NOT mean im clueless! jesus christ I hate comments like that!

You said your video card had only 128MB of memory. Several of us pointed out that that is actually QUITE A LOT of video memory. I have a server at my house that started out with less than 128KB of video memory.

You have NO CLUE what it is like to have not much computing power.

What was your first computer? A Pentium 3, probably over 1Ghz, with a 64MB video card? Lets see, that's over ten times faster than my first Intel machine, and probably over 1000 times faster than my first PC, which was a Tandy. And before that I used an IBM PS/2 (two floppy drives, no hard drive at all), several flavors of Comadore, some big white all-in-one boxes that I can't even remember the name of, and of course all the Apple products that got purchased by school systems in the 80s. The data was stored on audio cassette tapes, the keyboards were clunky, the displays were crappy, the computers were slow ... AND WE LIKED IT!

So don't get all pissy about me saying you're clueless. All it does is promote your cluelessness.

Slow down LM - looks like you need you happy pills ;)

Total: 150GB

Grand Total: 2112.3GB

//EDIT bought 3 more 10k/9.1g drives last weekend

What in the world are you doing with all that storage? Is this personal or does it have something to do with work? If I were to add up all the workstation drives in the building I'm sure it'd be another 5TB (:

I have a suposed 200GB disk, but when I look at the capacity it says 189GB. Isn't that abit much on formatting?

The whole bit about "formatting" is a crock of hoey. Really the issue is "marketing speak".

1KB = 1024B
1MB = 1024KB
1GB = 1024MB
1TB = 1024GB
1PB = 1024TB

1024 comes from 2^10.

Unfortunately when the marketing department started doing advertising for hard drives back in the day they went on a 1000 scale instead of a 1024 scale. When you're talking about 5MB hard drives it's not that big of a deal. It's 5,242,880 Bytes vs 5,000,000 Bytes. But when you put in another factor of 1024 it starts to become a problem. 5,368,709,120 Bytes vs 5,000,000,000 Bytes - that's over a third of a gigabyte!

So a drive that is sold as a "200GB" drive is actually only 200,000,000,000 Bytes, when infact it should be 214,748,364,800 Bytes. So when you format that drive you end up with 186.26 Gigabytes.

Nope, that's just personal.

I was running SCSI before I switched to IDE, so I've had the 36 and 18gb IBMs and the 9gb/7200rpm IBM for years... the other SCSI drives I bought last summer from a surplus store for $10 each. I bought a total of like 20 drives, but a few of them were dead. The ones I listed all work fine... no bad sectors, no funny noises, nothing. I've got a bunch of SCSI RAID cards sitting around too, so...

As for the IDE drives... I just like all of my computers to have at least 2 hard drives for backup purposes, and IDE drives are so cheap now that I usually just pick up 2 or 3 or whatever whenever Fry's has a sale... 👍

I can't imagine the power requirements for all those spindles .... (:

So what are you doing with all those computers? I would suggest getting all the 'like drives' into one box and RAID 5 them. Then put all your data in one place and access it over the network. That way you end up with a bunch more volume and still good redundancy, and all your data is accessible from everywhere.

That's basically what my room mate are doing. He's got a server with 6 drives. Two 80GB mirrored for system, and four 300GB in RAID 5. Then we throw everything we've got on it. Nearly 1TB in a single box. Works well - much better than having to remember what computer we put what data on.

So what are you doing with all those computers?.

Power requirements... a lot :lol: When I get around to hooking 14 of the 9.1GB drives up to one of the SCSI RAID cards, I'll run them off one of my 550w PSes, and run the rest of the system off another one. 👍

What am I doing with them? Why, the same thing I do every night Pinky... TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!! muahahahahaha!!!

...oh. Err... was that out loud? Yeah... anyhow, I just screw around with them.I only ever really use the Xeon system and the laptop... I hadn't used the single CPU AXP system since last summer, up until last weekend when I put a PCI wireless card in it so I can get online from my desktop at home... My P4 desktop has never booted into windows with the board its got now, and it's almost a year old. I've got all of the parts for it (although I'd have to give up some RAM from the Xeon)... I just can't be arsed to get it running again right now.

Oh, and how do you guys with like a single 80GB drive manage? I mean where the hell do you put all your porn? Seriously... before I started sorting mine (which I've been working on for a while now...) I had like 40GB... Throw in windows, a few programs, some music, etc. and that's an entire 80GB drive full right there. I don't know how the hell you people do it.

i love my 180GB...even though im only using 23.7 GB with 1000 songs and 2000 pics (half being high quality powerpoint backgruonds)

A 160GB in the computer, used about 63GB so far, through about 5, maybe 6 months with the computer. 20GB on the iPod. About 30GB on the other computers. About four moles of CD's laying around my room.

Because thre is such a thing as burning to DVDs! :dopey: :P

That and we don't all need that stuff.

I've currently got a 160Gb main hard drive and a 60Gb slave drive so I've got 220Gb in total.

But of that 160Gb, I had 40Gb dedicated to Mandrake Linux 10 which I need to reinstall so I've got 40Gb unused at the moment.

I'll start. 2.18 TB. That's 2,232 GB for the laymen among us. Giles? I know you have access to some impressive stuff. How about it?[/IMG]
What could you possibly need 2 terabytes for? Are you running a web server with dozens of sites or are you heavy into video editing that requires hundreds of gigs of space for or what?

LM runs a network belonging to a design house. I'm technical manager for a contract that runs a 2,300-user network.

We have one file server with 14x 72GB disks. It has one 600GB partition on it, plus a bunch of other smaller ones (like 72GB RAID 1+0). It's brand new, and we already know that it's not enough space. It has to store 150 files per day, each of around 5MB, for three years.

150 x 5 x 365 x 3 = 821,250MB. The 600GB drive isn't nearly big enough...

I think I'll revive this thread. Anybody have any of the 15000 rpm drives? Damn those look cool.
By the way, I have a 93 GB laptop internal and a 186.26GB external, with about 5 gigs free.
