The car i want as my first car is a Lada Niva.
They were first produced in 77', but you can still buy them new for like €10k

most of the cars i'd want to own are already listed in some form or another on this thread.
in EVERY SINGLE CASE, i'd prefer to have a modern, more powerful engine that is fuel injected and catalysed, together with an overdrive transmission, whether stick or auto. the more powerful engine would tax some of the less structurally stiff cars, so id want them to be stripped bare, reinforced with high strength steel, and have welds added to add strength where possible. better rustproofing, better brakes, better insulation, better suspension, modern wheels that mimic the ones that were contemporary when the cars were made.
the eagle E type should give you an idea of how comprehensive the updating would look.
i'll start with the ones that aren't listed; no pics. new mac, still learning. gonna try and link though.
BMW 3.0cs (imagine this with the twin turbo engine BMW and 6 speed uses right now) the most beautiful car to come out of Germany. period.

I have it on very good authority that you don't want a new one. You want one with about 20-30,000km on it. By this time all the crappy Lada parts which break will have been replaced with proper items.The car i want as my first car is a Lada Niva.

The lada niva doesn't have crappy parts. (well maybe a minor few, but nothing more than an average French car, but way more reliable)
They were a revolution in their time.
The 2123 even set an altitude record, but it has been broken by the touareg in 2005.

A selection of miscellaneous Japanese classics I'd love to own one day... But on the east coast that's going to be a bit difficult. But that's truly the way a classic Japanese car should look; riveted flares, chin spoiler, really wide Watanabes or old school Works, and dumped on the ground.

S30Z was the chassis code for the "regular" 240Z, a bit like BNR32 would represent a 1989-1994 Skyline GT-R, for example. That one is a regular 240Z, however there was a more powerful, long nosed version dubbed the S30ZG. You can notice the bottom of the bumper is more rounded out, like a jet fighter's auxiliary fuel tank.
Both are beautiful, but I'm partial to the short nosed version myself.
It's funny to look back at the way people modified their cars back in the 50s/60s/70s according to the regions they lived in. America had Cragar/American Racing wheels and superchargers sticking out from the bonnet, Europe had Borrani wire wheels, low slung windshields on the roadsters, and Asia used very wide wheels with massive fenders... All different ways to get to automotive nirvana.

I think wide wheels are generally a much later addition. In period japanese cars had wheels just as narrow as anywhere else in the world. Road car tyres didn't really become wide until the mid-late 70's.

I'd want Gen 1 Firebird. I think they looks so much better than the camaros, but unfortunatly I don't know too much about them since I never see them. If you watch the Matrix reloaded, when they are fighting on hte highway and that chick catches Morpheous she's driving one.

I actually very nearly had a '70 Malibu SS just like this for my first car:
As I recall, the sticker was something like $4000 at the time, which is probably five times that today...
Similarly, there was an El Camino SS 396 that was nearly bought as well:
