Chapter 33 - To England!
It was midnight. Hitomi had only just gotten back to the hotel after her outing with Leon. Yuka was watching TV.
Hitomi: Yuka?
Yuka: Hi.
Hitomi: Are you okay?
Yuka: Yup.
Hitomi: You’re not mad at me or anything?
Yuka: I’m still mad at you, I just don’t have the energy to have an argument with you about how to treat your cousin.
Hitomi: I’m sorry Yuka. I got too caught up with my own feelings. I’m here to race with you, not fall in love with a guy I barely know. My bad.
Yuka: I forgive you Hitomi, at least you’re sorry.
Hitomi: I rejected him in the end.
Yuka: Why? I thought you adored him.
Hitomi: I do but he started talking about marriage and kids and ugh! Not interested in kids to be honest.
Yuka: So I take it nothing happened with him?
Hitomi: We kissed and that’s as far as it went. Actually after I rejected him we started talking about racing. Yuka, his brother owns a small racing team in the UK. We could save some money and borrow one of their cars instead of buying our own.
Yuka: Really? Well I suppose that is good.
Hitomi: How about it then?
Yuka: Sure.
Hitomi: Also Leon agreed to buy the C4 from us. It’s not a good price but I suppose we’re still saving money in the end.
Yuka: How much?
Hitomi: 20,000 Euros.
Yuka: I guess it’s better than nothing.
Hitomi: Yeah. So cheer up eh? We’ve got a plane to catch in the morning!
Hitomi sat down beside Yuka and gave her cousin a hug.
Hitomi: You’re my cousin, Yuka. I should treat you better. How about I pay for drinks next time?
Yuka: I don’t drink…
Hitomi: Well I’ll buy you all the Coke that you want then.
Yuka: Mmm. Okay then.
The next day…
Hitomi and Yuka boarded their plane just in time before the gate closed.
Yuka: Ahh! Traffic is awful to the airport! I’m so glad I can relax for a few hours now.
Hitomi: Yeah tell me about it. I wouldn’t be able to live here on a daily basis.
Yuka: Well I’m beat so wake me when we land if I’m not awake already.
Yuka put a pillow beside the window and dozed off to sleep. Hitomi put a blanket over herself and Yuka.
Hitomi: Need to keep warm even in a plane Yuka.
Yuka: Mhmm, thanks.
Meanwhile, in Japan…
Dave walked out of the hospital doors and looked around for TJ.
Dave: Where is that guy?
Dave looked to his right and noticed a green Atenza driving towards him.
Dave: No… That isn’t it… Surely not?
The Atenza stopped in front of Dave. TJ wound the window down.
TJ: Sexy isn’t it? Get in.
Dave: This is not what I was expecting.
TJ: Same here, now get in.
Dave got in and buckled up.
TJ: Ready to race the guy who put you in there?
TJ pointed to the hospital.
Dave: Now?
TJ: Yup.
Dave: You said he drove a Mustang right? How am I supposed to beat that?
TJ: We’re doing this at Mt. Aso.
Dave: Then I can’t possibly beat him with this!
TJ: Yes you can. It’s one of the more twisty sections of Aso. His Mustang will be at a disadvantage on the corners but that wont stop him from stomping you down the straights. You just need to make the most out of the corners.
Dave: You talk about it like it’s a sport.
TJ: It almost is, in a way.
Later on…
TJ and Dave reached Mt. Aso. Shin was already parked up, waiting for Dave.
TJ: That’s him. Remember anything?
Dave: Yeah… What the hell was I thinking trying to race that?
TJ: I have no idea, but you better win this time.
Dave: Yeah.
TJ pulled in beside Shin.
Shin: What a heap. Is this guy serious?
TJ got out of the car and approached Shin. Dave followed.
TJ: Dave, this is Shin. Shin, Dave.
Shin: I see you’ve gotten something a little bigger than the Vitz.
Dave: I’m sorry I acted the way I did that night, but you didn’t have to ram me into hospital!
Shin: I don’t want your apology. I want a race. Since coming to Japan I’ve not lost a single race. I know of only one person who could beat me and she’s not even in the country. Your chances look slim.
TJ: Hitomi eh? I’d like to see what she thinks of your antics.
Shin: You know her?
TJ: I’ve seen her race. Tough girl. Never seen a Corvette handle so well before.
Dave: I don’t like your attitude Shin!
Shin: Quiet little boy.
Dave: No you shut up! I’m going to send you home packing! I apologised and you still insist on being a jerk! Let’s race!
Shin: Your car is mine Dave.
Shin started up the Mustang and floored it out of the parking lot. Doing a donut around the Atenza before screeching onto the road.
TJ: It’s a cat and mouse style battle, ever done one before?
Dave: No, but I’m sure I’ll be fine. It’s not my first battle at Aso.
TJ: Good. It’s probably not his first either so don’t cut him any slack.
Dave: I got it.
TJ and Dave got back into the Atenza, this time with Dave behind the wheel. He set off and lined up behind Shin.
TJ: A little piece of advice, you’re 130 horsepower down but you’ve got 200 kilos in your favour. It’s no doubt that Mustang takes more out of the driver than this Atenza does. Try and draw the battle out until he makes a mistake. It’s our only chance.
Dave: I’ll try.
TJ: Good luck.
TJ got out and walked towards Shin’s driver side window. He exchanged words with the Mustang driver before walking up to the start line to begin the count.
TJ: 3!
Shin: Let’s do this. I’m not losing to this kid.
TJ: 2!
Dave: I have to win this. We have to win this.
TJ: 1!
TJ: Go!
Shin launched the Mustang, lighting up the rear tyres. Dave drove through the smoke, making the best of the Atenza’s traction.
Shin: You’re no match for me!
The Mustang started pulling away from the Atenza, making the most of its power advantage.
Dave: Damn! He’s fast!
Shin: No problem.
Then came the first corner. Shin braked hard and dove into the corner. The rear end of the Mustang swung out under power. He held the slide around the corner.
Shin: This terrain isn’t exactly this car’s forte. Thankfully, drifting is.
Dave: Being the chaser isn’t easy like this, I can’t see a thing!
Shin swung the car round and drifted the next corner.
Shin: Too easy!
Dave: Even when he’s sideways he’s faster than me! What the hell?!
Shin backed off through the next set of corners, allowing Dave to make up some ground.
Dave: He’s slowing down?
Shin: This roads are narrow, I can’t risk crashing because of my drifting.
Dave was getting closer and closer to Shin, who was still taking it easy to preserve his tyres. They passed through some gentle bends before suddenly reaching a blind corner.
Shin: Holy…!
Shin braked hard in panic, sending the Mustang into a wild drift. Dave followed, also wrestling his car through the blind corner, narrowly missing the fence.
Dave: Whoa! I have to watch out for that one next lap!
Shin: The hell kind of road is this?!
The road suddenly dipped down to the left again, both Shin and Dave braked hard to avoid the fence. Shin narrowly scraped the wall with his rear bumper and he drifted the car on the grass. Dave full on side swiped the fence, chipping the green paint off his right side.
Dave: Oh bugger!
Shin: This isn’t a racetrack, it’s an assault course!
Shin continued his drift around the next corner after now narrowly missing two fences in a row. Dave recovered from his off road excursion quickly and continued chasing down Shin.
Shin: I suppose it’s inevitable now huh?
Shin lead until the last corner, a steep uphill bend with a blind turn at the top. Shin made light work of it, whilst Dave struggled with his Atenza.
They flew down the last straight. The hilly road gave the Mustang’s suspension a workout, bouncing Shin inside the cabin. Dave’s Atenza was luckier, using its sports suspension to ride the hills smoothly. Dave kept up with Shin all the way until the finish, something Shin was not expecting.
Shin: Damn this old car! Can’t it beat a ricey econobox?!
Shin passed the finish post in first, with Dave still holding on behind.
Shin: Crap… Thanks to the roads here, I wasn’t able to leave that moron behind.
Dave: Phew! I still have a chance next round!
Shin and Dave turned around to line up for round two. This time, Dave was leading. TJ walked up to Dave’s window.
TJ: Only 0.8 seconds behind. How was it?
Dave: its nuts! There are two pretty dangerous blind bends and the last corner isn’t easy either.
TJ: But you survived it and the Atenza doesn’t look too bad either.
Dave: I suppose so. He’s fast but he’s having trouble controlling that Mustang. He practically drifted that run
TJ: I was right then. Just wait for him to make a mistake. His tyres are probably smoked already.
Dave: Mine aren’t holding up too well either.
TJ: You’d be surprised how much life these tyres have left. Get ready for round two, don’t let him pass you. Got it?
Dave: Got it.
Special thanks to Rotary Junkie for being Dave!
