So this image, referencing 9/11, offended some people.

Maybe I have no soul, but I don't see a problem with this. Of course, others disagree or this thread wouldn't exist.

People insist you cannot make light of 9/11, regardless of context or nature. I feel that by immortalizing it as something we must regard as completely serious and can't talk about in anything but hushed whispers and mournful tones just means that those responsible have won. The entire point of those attacks was to immortalize that action, in a negative aspect. By constantly hushing people on it and insisting on being 100% serious, we only honor the terrorists responsible.

It is a touchy subject to US citizens, being that we are not use to attacks on our soil. Where as in Europe, VW ads make light of suicide bombers.

The other issue I have is that the image was removed because it offended some people. If you censor everything that offends someone, you will ultimately end up censoring nearly all content. Common jokes regarding "your mom" could very easily be considered offensive to someone such as I, whose mother has passed away. Fat jokes will offend fat people, cultural jokes will offend those in question, anime jokes will offend anime fans, jokes about GM failing will irritate people that are affected.

In short, you cannot say anything without someone being offended by it, if by context, culture, or some other element.

In short, why so serious?

If it had begun with an arbitrary fiction it wold have been hilarious. Maybe the guy falling is 'shopped in, maybe not, but the representation of the tragedy as a joke is beyond demeaning to those people murdered that day, and their families and friends.

It wasn't so much "censorship" that got the image removed, I don't think, it was the fact that so many people were so clearly offended by the representation of the event as "funny." I wouldn't expect it to be removed from this context, which again removes the concept of censorship.

Some things just can't be made funny. Anybody that actually knows me personally and knows my sense of humor would understand how large a statement that is for me. Still, some things just can't be made funny.

My examples over on the other thread were the Civil War pictures of dead soldiers, the pictures from German death camps, and pictures of Tsunami victims. I intentionally included items from outside the US to point out that I wasn't offended because I thought a non-American was being insensitive to an American event. I was offended because tragedy was being celebrated.

That doesn't mean these events are sacred or taboo, and keeping them in an honorable light does not mean the bad guys win. There weren't even any bad guys in the Tsunami, just a natural disaster. But making light of them makes the sacrifice of the victims and their survivors even more pointless than it already is.

Similarly, the Dark Knight comic with the caption "Heath dies" at the end was, while not on the same scale, similarly poorly received by many.

You make a good point. But when I first saw it posted I thought the poster wouldn't last a day longer on this forum. Tbh I didn't really find it funny at all, and not because of the reference to 9/11 just mearly as a picture it was funny. (Why would Spiderman say 'How do I shoot a web'??') But on the point of 9/11 really its not something I'd personally joke about, especially not on a public forum with many known members who strong feelings on 9/11. I think its just one of things where 9/11 was such a big thing and so many died that it shouldn't really be joked about. You talked about the US and European attitudes on these things, I distinctly remember Lee Evans making a reference to the John Charles De Menezes shooting and not rushing to work on the tube. Many people laugh and repeat the joke and not think anything of it but im sure it offends people.

But im not going to get picky on these things. I'm sure the picture offends many many people here and that's the reason it has been removed from the funny picture thread. Rightly so in my opinion but yes there are things that will offend you and/or other members and not many will bat an eyelid.

For the record, it was another member (not Azuremen) who posted it. Okay, my choices as a moderator are not final and absolute, but I chose to remove the image. I personally find it insulting since it:

1) Shows someone leaping to a known death.
2) Shows the known death and destruction of many human beings.
3) Repeated sounds of FU..! are not really funny, and represent words that are not acceptable for our site.

Four other members also stated that the image was not funny. It was the "Funny Pic Thread": Generally, showing the destruction of human bodies is not funny.

I'll go ahead and say it: The second one is not cool.

General rule of thumb, 9-11 is not safe joke material.

...FoolKiller is right. 9-11 is not a joke...

It's not that it wasn't funny, it's just the twin towers being hit is totally unnecessary. Why not just use a picture of any building? I lol'd at the last two frames, but the first two are just not appropriate.

There was absolutely nothing even remotely funny about the pic. People who were expecting to spend another dreary day at the grindstone (including the person not Photoshopped in the second frame after choosing crushing over burning) had their existence erased by ignorant savages who think the people who gave you the right to express your opinion, and the technology to do so worldwide, are actually troopers for Satan and must be wiped out forever. They are the Islamic equivalent to the Ku Klux Klan, with the same self-centered failure to grasp the actual realities of the world around them along with the beauty of human diversity, and instead take the stand that the only way to make the world agreeable is to remove everyone "not them." People died, through no action of their own, serving no higher purpose, murdered by fanatics who put themselves in a state of delusional godhood by planning and carrying out their atrocities.

Nobody posts funny caption pictures from photography's early days in the Civil War, stacks of bodies on the fields around places like Gettysburg, or pictures of the dust of bones from the ovens of eastern Germany, or a trainload of bodies lying on its side in the mud in Sri Lanka after the ocean came up in wave after wave and swept it away.

Don't you EVER tell me to get over it you [insert imaginiative string of terms here], you don't have the [explitive] right!!!!

Edit: Well, I see the thread has been undergoing a cleanup while I was typing, which I applaude, but I stand by what I posted.

----

Only if you are overly politically correct. Just stressing over it more makes the terrorists win that much more, because that was the whole point. By making it a bad thing and all taboo, well, yeah, just playing along with what they wanted.

I see no issue at all with the comic.

Pupik
Image is now removed: Rule of thumb is that anyone meeting a known death is not funny. Knowingly doing so is not cool, and not acceptable for this forum.

The title of this thread is: Funny Pic Thread. Aim at funny, and not below the belt and into the gutter.

Let's move along, please?

Azureman
Except I thought it was funny. And so did some other people.

So how did it violate the AUP?

Well, you keep doing what the terrorists want, and we'll keep doing what they don't.

By continually harping on it, people won't let it go, or move on, which immortalizes the actions of the terrorists. Which is exactly what they want.

Death happens, learn to deal with it.

Stay on topic, discuss this in the Opinions forum, if you wish.

The AUP is not a final draft of good nor bad taste, but we reserve the right to not completely offend others, and to uphold the law. Since the image in question is a derivative work of a copyrighted image, it violates U.S. copyright law, where the servers for GTPlanet exist.

If you don't like that answer, please consult an attorney.

So, can I ask that every joke about "your mom" be removed since my mother is dead?

The irony of this all is that by removing it, because it is "un-American" to make light of, we are in fact being "un-American."

Feel free to move this all to a separate thread on the matter, because I am quite ready to talk about this at length.

I agree with Mr Men Azure. The picture of the now dead pope on the previous didn't even get a slight reaction. That can be just as offensive as the 9/11 pic for some, shouldn't that be removed aswell then?

Oh, it's un-American, you say? Taking the lives of any innocent person is un-American. The people who find those sorts of images "funny" are those who have nothing but contempt for America. Before you shout post-hoc fallacy, I am not insinuating in any way that you are a terrorist, so don't even try it. I'm pointing out my feelings towards the image, and I declare it unacceptable to the topic of the thread and in violation of copyright status, which in this case, doesn't specifically permit redistribution in any way, shape, or form.

Never mind the fact that the image in question is a derivative work of three copyrighted images, of which re-distribution is not legally permissible. Oh, I know...anyone that's ever posted an image pretty much violates that rule here. But guess what? I can stand behind that one, as it is United States law, and GTPlanet is based in the United States.

Lastly, Peter Parker knows how to use proper English.

It is a touchy subject to US citizens, being that we are not use to attacks on our soil. Where as in Europe, VW ads make light of suicide bombers.

That ad was never created by VW: Look it up.

Let's see...

Sure, you may rank 9/11 with those events in terms of overall deadliness, but there's a difference between showing a few hundred dead bodies and trying to make a funny than a building blowing up and ONE person falling presumably to their death.

Sure, we all know the actual event that the picture(s) were taken from caused many deaths and was quite an atrocity...

But viewed as nothing more than what it is (a joke), it's completely harmless and inoffensive as far as I can see. So WHAT if it makes light of a disaster? It's not saying "Oh all these people dying was funny", it's more depicting anguish/fear of the guy falling with Spidey being inable to save him.

I'll make this short and sweet, overall, I agree with Cody. It does a disservice to what we as Americans have fought and stood for to constantly fear the wrath of people's feelings when attempting to express our own through art, music, photography... or jokes of "poor taste" on the internet.

No one is going to be completely happy with anything posted anywhere, and while I certainly can understand why some would be so opposed to the image posted above, I nevertheless would care to say that it certainly is not the worst thing possible to post.

Would I post it? Probably not. Do I necessarily feel as though these poster(s) should be prosecuted, at any forum, should be? Certainly not.

So WHAT if it makes light of a disaster? It's not saying "Oh all these people dying was funny", it's more depicting anguish/fear of the guy falling with Spidey being inable to save him.

I didn't get to look through all of the 9/11-themed Marvel and DC comics, but what the image is dealing with is something that was addressed in those previously... Albeit in the thin veil of some poor internet humor.

So WHAT if it makes light of a disaster? It's not saying "Oh all these people dying was funny", it's more depicting anguish/fear of the guy falling with Spidey being inable to save him.
It's one thing to use the images to illustrate a point in a thread about war or death or destruction, but it was the Funny Pic Thread. It is simply a place for:

Funny Images.

Now everyone has their own ideas about what is funny, not funny, offensive, unacceptable per the house rules, or just plain nonsensical, but knowingly showing images which graphically (that is to say, an actual image/photo) depicting death in any way are not acceptable for a Humor-related (sub-)forum. It also provokes too much off-topic chatter, and drags down the thread.

Yes, we're all going to die one day. That's a universal truth, and in an abstract and transcendental way, it's something I will probably receive with a laugh, as uttered from my own mouth. But I do not, and never expect in return, that anyone else should feel the same way.

I use the toilet everyday. It's not funny, either. I wake up everyday. It's not funny, either. I take a vitamin pill everyday. It's not...you get the point.

It is extremely rare that four people agree that an image is unsuitable, and I acted not out of personal distaste, but as to not spoil the integrity of a thread many members wish to enjoy, and to not sour the forum community as a whole.

Would I post it? Probably not. Do I necessarily feel as though these poster(s) should be prosecuted, at any forum, should be? Certainly not.

Nobody was given so much as a warning, only posts were deleted, since it was based on the opinions of others, and on my opinion to delete the image, which has been formed by my 7 years of time at GTPlanet, and many more years of experience at life in general.

Moderators are not here to babysit nor chaperon the dance. But we do have limits, and are here to steer threads and the forum from becoming an unmanageable mess. Make a mistake, and we gently give you prod. If you ignore that request, we warn, hand out infractions, and only ban when people insist on making GTPlanet an undesirable mess and destroy the purpose and/or integrity of the site. If any of you still don't like it, you know the alternatives.

I still stand by my decision.

That's just it...

It's funny if you don't look into it any. The ONLY thing that makes it offensive is the use of 9/11, but then, that is only offensive if you read into it...

Almost any joke can be found offensive/unfunny if you scratch the surface. This just required a lot less scratching to get the "sniff".

. . . a building blowing up and ONE person falling presumably to their death.

That was my point when I said "If it had begun with an arbitrary fiction," but we ALL know what building that is, and we all know what building forms the background of the second frame. That was not arbitrary. Had it been, say, a gas line explosion throwing the guy out the window, it actually would have worked pretty well. The cartoonist was not satisfied with that, and had to use the 9/11 theme. Poorly.

If you want me to stay American, we don't make funny pictures of the Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor, or the Arlington cemetary, or the Challenger memorial. Even though we did the deed, we don't make funny pictures of the Atomic Bomb Memorial in Hiroshima.

As quite an off-topic aside, I've just noticed that I haven't changed back to my non-holiday avatar. Somebody hand me a calendar!

And it isn't making light of a memorial. All your comparisons have been rather poor and indirect. An attempt to compare a systemic attempt to remove an entire ethnicity from the planet, resulting in several million deaths, does not compare to a single attack that killed fewer than 3000 people. The reason Americans get so uptight about it is that it was America that was attacked.

On top of that, I can't think of too many instances where large sky scrapers have just exploded. So I can't hold it against the cartoonist for using a widely available image.

And 4 people being offended by an image, on a board with over 100,000 members, is a trite amount. I am sure I could find 4 people here that have been offended by the doings of the moderation team. Does that mean we should start censoring the mod team? You can always find someone that is offended by something, and if you react on the small percentage, 0.004% in this case, you will end up having to take down quite a bit more.

"Won't somebody please think of the children!?!"

You know that's a case of lies, damn lies, and statistics: Four offended members are enough; our membership is rarely united in feeling offended by an image, and have a just reason to feel that way. Never mind that no more than 700-800 registered members ever come to our site at any given moment in time, on a good day. Never mind the fact it is a copyrighted image, which technically is not reproduced in an acceptable and legal manner.

Do yourself a favor and stop filibustering our forums with this kind of tripe: We know how to moderate ourselves, that's how we got promoted. You want a free-for-all? I suggest finding another forum for that type of activity.

If you pulled everything of this site that is copy righted, a large majority of people here wouldn't have avatars, and the same for a lot of the content in the funny picture thread.

Further, you could probably argue that those images were being used under parody rights, but I'm not a copy right lawyer.

Pupik

My "tripe" tends to get people interested in the happenings around here. Yes, you know how to moderate yourself, but the moderation here has become increasingly strict over the years, to the point that many older members find this place less and less enjoyable every day.

I am on plenty of other forums, just google my user name and see. I enjoy this community, and use to more so in the past. My comments regarding the increased moderation, and the absurdly serious nature many of the mods have developed are not out of line. I see nothing saying I can't question, with in reason, the happenings and rulings of the forum. Thus why we have an opinion section.

But apparently, I can't hold an opinion from what you are saying, because you have declared it "tripe." In all honesty, it just sounds like you are making a threat because you disagree with my sentiments, which I present in a generally thought out and appropriate manner. As opposed, to say, posting random advice dog pictures as replies.

I make no personal threat, I'm merely stating the known and obvious of disobeying the rules, and I have no personal grudge towards you. I get the idea you want to make a point out of this, and I think you're barking up the wrong tree: It's a matter of bad taste, and controlling the flow of the thread when it wanders (or has obvious potential to do so).

To be told that we need moderation because a few people disagree with the moderators' decisions borders on an insult itself; I'm fairly lenient, but that image went too far away from funny in that thread. Previously unacceptable or bad-taste images have been removed before in that thread, and to date, that is one of perhaps 2-3 images I have removed from view (with the exception of spam).

Was it really funny...well, how do you know when something is funny?

Did you laugh? I mean, LAUGH! or just: "Hmm...lol."

Generally I agree with Cody.

I would say it’s just a joke and that it’s not something that people should get wound up about, but then I’m not American so I’m not allowed to comment on 9/11.

It was a dumb joke, but I don’t find it offensive and I think that reading into it is an exercise in futility. It’s a joke and even though it’s not funny I doubt the author was trying to offend anyone. Trying to use shock-value, maybe, but that’s hardly the same thing.

And Pupik, please drop the copywrite line. You know as well as I that it’s just a cop-out. ;)

Indeed, look at it, nine people viewing this thread. Nine! That’s, like, nine people.

My dramatization was for effect. Apparently you took it far too seriously.

Did you laugh? I mean, LAUGH! or just: "Hmm...lol."

I really, really have nothing more to say about this.

I laughed, sitting in my chair. There are numerous images shown that I don't find amusing at all, notably all the Cyanide and Happiness comics.\

Honestly, it very much seemed you were saying my opinion is invalid because you disagree with it, and that I should stop posting because of that.

Something absolutely vital in the mechanics of the attempt at humor is the premise. It uses the premise of someone jumping out of the WTC as a scenario for the joke. It is in no way laughing at, minimizing or diminishing the loss of life on that day. You know it doesn't, but the fact it pulls at your heartstrings nudges your emotions. I do not believe the image should have been removed because of the premise it used to make a joke. There are countless Monty Python sketches that use war as the premise of humor which in no way insult or demean the products of war. There's also that series of parodies of a scene from the flick Downfall that dub in comical subtitles to a rant about killing Jewish people. The joke isn't about Jewish people, it's the premise. The joke is about the Superbowl or some other disambiguation of the original drama. I'm not going to bother finding the bit, but I'm sure someone's dropped it into the Funny Vid thread (not to mention it breaks copyright violations as well).

It's a private forum... the moderators and owners get to decide what's allowable or not. That's the long and short of it.

And, personally... I don't think any picture showcasing death on any scale can be considered remotely funny... whatever the source material or background. If someone attempted to show a guy getting cut in half due to an auto-accident, with the crudely drawn caption "I'm screwed now" on it... it'd get censored just the same, I bet. It's just not in good taste... and I've taken to censoring stuff like that on our boards, too.

It'd be funny if it didn't use an obviously real-life picture of people dying in it. But it does, so it isn't.

The picture? I don't really find it humorous, but I don't find most pictures funny that are posted in the Funny Pictures thread. I see nothing wrong with it being posted since there are people who did find it funny, or at least amusing. There is also nothing about the picture in question that has violated any part of the AUP, the only boarder line part is the "FU" which could become a profane word by the addition of two letters...but for all we know the rest of the word could be "NNY".

Is joking about 9/11 OK? I don't see why it wouldn't be, people joke about things they shouldn't all the time and more often then not we laugh at them. Go see just about any stand up comic, they are incredibly offensive, yet people still pay money to go see them and they typically have quite a few laughs. Handicapped people, homosexuals, the poor, the homeless, various religious groups, etc. are often poked fun on a daily bases and I really fail to see how that is any better or worse then joking about 9/11 since it all can be tragedy in one form or another.

This is the selective moderation stuff I don't quite understand here. Some things are taking way to leniently while other things are taken way to strictly, which is often even confusing for me, a long term member. I understand if something violated the AUP then it is therefore grounds for either deletion and/or punishment, I can respect that. But I've been insulted by various long term members and moderators in various opinion discussions since I don't share a similar view. I report them like I am often instructed to do, but as far as I can tell nothing is done about it. If I am insulted or offended doesn't that mean the other member has broken a clearly defined rule? Maybe I just misunderstand the whole thing though.

For as much as me and Cody disagree on things, I can agree with just about every thing he is saying here.

It'd be funny if it didn't use an obviously real-life picture of people dying in it. But it does, so it isn't.

It doesn't. Quite.

It shows the person falling but it leaves it up to the person looking at the picture to decide whether they die.

Of course they DO/DID, but it's not depicted.

So Pupik, correct me if I am wrong here, are you saying the moderator staff can do whatever they like for whatever reason? If that's what it is then I'll respect it, although I won't agree with it.

Another quality contribution to our forum...

What he said...:

Well you did when you joined. ;)

...except we generally go with the flow. We uphold Jordan's rules. It's his site. I do not speak for the entire moderating staff at all times, though we are generally a united front. When in doubt, we discuss the matter. An image that insults others has got to go. I mean, really insults them, not just for the sake of convenience. I've spent almost three hours on the matter...you do think I don't feel strong enough about my convictions and decisions regarding this unsuitable image?

A couple of you really feel we're twisting your arms and making you stay here because you can't post boobies, and use four-letter words in every post. Again, you know what the alternative is.

I have made it very clear to the moderation staff that I personally consider images of 'death' extremely offensive, and I do not want them on my website. It's one of the most disrespectful things that can be done to a deceased person and their family, and to see this one used in an attempt at a joke is disturbing. Pupik enforced my rules as I want them to be enforced and clearly understands my opinion - that's why he is a moderator.

I am the only person on GTPlanet who has to be offended by something in order for it to be removed.

So Pupik, correct me if I am wrong here, are you saying the moderator staff can do whatever they like for whatever reason? If that's what it is then I'll respect it, although I won't agree with it.
The moderators are here to help me enforce the rules that I have established for the site, and every member of the staff is accountable to me. That provision is obviously in the AUP to cover situations just like this - if I don't like something, I reserve the right to remove it for any reason that I want. Just remember, the moderators are enforcing my rules as best they understand them. If you have a problem with a policy or how it is enforced, you need to come to me. I have and will gladly listen to any arguments or complaints.

I admit that wasn't the best way to phrase it, although I think it is understood what I was implying. I live with laws and rules everyday I don't agree with, but I still follow them to make life easier. It's just a fact of life. I don't agree that I can't go over 45mph on the back road I take to work, but I know if I go over that I will get ticketed so I stick to that limit.

And I don't feel like, nor am I implying that, anyone is twisting my arm to stay here. If I want to see "boobies" as you put it I can look elsewhere on the net or in real life for that matter. If I want to use profane four letter words I will talk with my friends who do the same. For the most part, and I mean like 99% of the whole, I enjoy the sense of community GTP offers, if I didn't I wouldn't spend nearly as much time here as I do. I mean I have over 22,000 posts, that alone speaks for how much I enjoy this community. If I wanted to leave I just would, but I don't. It's just sometimes there are things that make me scratch my head a bit, but the same goes for everything in life.

And that is understandable, you are after all the person who pays for all of this and I can respect that. You know in the past I have addressed you with concerns of how a few moderators have treated me as well as other members. If they are dealt with is something I don't know, nor is it really any of my business per say. I will keep this in mind in case a situation comes up again and will go straight to you for either clarification or ask for your help in resolving the situation.
