Further explanation of the theme, in the words of by our Week 13 Winner Benmastaw00t:

To further elaborate, I want photographers to shoot any car at any track or photo travel
location, as long as the camera is set to 35mm at f/1.4. The thought behind my theme is that
a lot of great portraits especially ones using natural light are created with a focal length of
about 35-50mm with an extremely shallow depth of field. If photographers can evoke strong
emotions and superb quality using people, why not do the same for cars?"

CARS: Any (or even None)
LOCATIONS: Any
PHOTO TRAVEL: Yes
UNIQUE RESTRICTIONS: Must use 35mm & f/1.4 settings. No Miniature Filter!

  • No full-size images posted in thread; your entry will be ignored.
[*]One entry per user. It must be your own work, and never previously used in a comp.
[*]Mark your FINAL ENTRY clearly, with red text.
[*]You may change your entry once. Do it clearly; edit out your previous entry, and
either post the new one in a new reply, or in place of the original.
[*]When submitting, use either a thumbnail or a preview image, linked to the full-sizer.
[*]Preview images can not exceed 500 pixels in either direction.
[*]A preview image must be representative of the full-size image. Do not add effects to it.
[*]Winner gets to choose the following week's theme, as well as the Top 20. Every fourth
week, the poll will be H2H style: entries must choose a "team", and the best from each
poll faces off in a final 48 hour poll.
[*]Winners cannot enter in their own theme!

What you may not do to a photo:
  • Alter the geometry of the car. No stickers, or body modifications not available in game.
  • Add shapes or objects from outside of GT5, signatures excepted.
  • Remove items from shot (scenery, other cars).
  • Use more than 1 image (HDR, photo-stitching, multi-exposure).

What you may do to a photo:
  • Crop and/or resize an image.
  • Adjust the level or curve values.
  • Alter the colour tone of the image (gradient maps, photo filters, colour balance, etc).
  • Adjust brightness, contrast, exposure, shadow/highlights.
  • Enhance shadows or highlights (dodge and burn tools in Photoshop, for example).
  • Add noise and/or diffuse glow.
  • Add a post-game tilt-shift blur, or apply a motion blur to a stationary Photo Travel shot.
  • Make use of Layer Blend Modes.
  • Use a Sharpening filter and/or tool.
  • Scale or enlarge rims.
  • Remove or modify license plates.
  • Remove the GT watermark.
  • Add a personal signature.
  • Clean up or fix jaggies, texture pixelation, or colour separation.
  • Add a vignette effect.

This Week's News
A few small things this week:

  • Flickr conveniently shows EXIF data to ensure people stick to the rules here :)
  • Imageshack has changed their setup, making it a right pain to link to full-sizers, and even get the code necessary for preview images. I will most likely be using Flickr for all future competition threads and my own personal entries; this may extend to making it the "default" choice for the comps (since it does provide a handy 500 x 500 auto resize). Discuss!
  • You'll notice "CLOSED" is now placed in front of thread titles. This is to assist forum viewers in finding only the threads that are active, and understanding which are now completed :)

Wow I can't wait for this. I have taken A LOT of pictures at real focal lengths and aperture setting and 35mm 1.4 is one of my favorites. 50mm 1.4 is brilliant as well.

Slipz, I agree about Flickr, it's easy and works.

Back to the thread at hand, I can't wait to give this a go, great choice of theme. Thinking outside the box instead of choosing another car or location restriction is a welcome breath of fresh air.

Good luck to all that enter.

Hm, I don't really like the Flickr idea.
I mean, most people are using it already, yes. But some don't. What I don't like is that Flickr limits your picture size to 1024 x XXX if you don't have a premium account. Maybe it's just me, but that's just too small.

And about imageshack: It's not that bad. If you upload two pictures at the same time (Original and Thumbnail) you'll get your full-size links directly.

Ooh, I do like the theme! Fast primes ftw. 👍

On the topic of Flickr, I'm not such a huge fan of the idea, mainly because unless you're a paid user, your images are limited to 1024 pixels across the longest side. :( which would be a great shame I think, especially since Photo Travel images especially offer such clarity and resolution. If there's a full res option for free user which I've missed, somebody let me know!

Question: are there restrictions to filters this week (in-game or photoshop). Using the "miniature" filter could spoil the idea behind the theme me thinks.

As I said in another thread:

Well, the best to me is hosting through Picasa/Picasaweb - You can host the picture at it's original size and (changing the link a bit) you can share it's full size. The only drawback is to have a maximum of 1GB of uploaded images.

Imageshack was the first one I used and it has a pretty simple interface and it's one of the easiest and simple ones to use (i.e. grab the direct link is quick and easy), but it has the problem wfooshee mentions. Images just disappear for no apparent reason.

Photobucket was the next one in line, great at beginning, but a huge disappointment in the end. The introduction of bandwidth limit, and the fact that if you are a long time user (apparently, what happen to me) they compress all your images, like you'd save a .jpg in it's worst quality, were a huge let down to me.

Flickr - I've been using it from time to time, I'ts not that easy to grab the direct link as the previous mentioned hosts, but doesn't delete or compress it's images. The only thing is, that you can only see and display the 200 most recent photos, older photos cannot be seen, only if you upgrade your account.

But, the way I've been using is, Imageshack for competitions and HOF porposes, Flickr for gallery panels (although I'll change it shortly because of the 200 pictures limit) and picasa for entries and gallery images.

Also, I don't notice any changes in Imageshack, it's easy as everything to get the direct link, to upload multiple images, so, I don't see a problem with it. But, if you fancy Flickr more, it's your call, you'll be the one using it, thing is, older linked images will will become invisible to users.

But shouldn't we be discussing this in the Photomode Competitions Discussion Thread? ;)

I've had no issues with Imageshack except for it losing some really old photos. The uploading is still fast and fairly trouble free as long as you sign in. Once you've uploaded 2 photos it takes you to your gallery and you can then click the small 'i' at the top right of each thumbnail to get the direct link to copy and paste. It only takes a few seconds for me!

I have images from 2 years ago that still work, so i think it's fine for photomode comps!

Thanks for the heads-up, as I totally forgot about that filter.

Slip, if you could add the the rules that "no miniature filter is allowed", that would be awesome.

Also, I'll loosen up the restrictions at the same time. Landscape photos and/or portraits of the people in photo travel are allowed.

So let me get this right, we are allowed to go over 35mm. As long as it is between 35mm and 50mm.

Or is it just 35mm.

And why did you put 35mm-50mm in the info.

The thought behind my theme is that a lot of great portraits especially ones using natural light are created with a focal length of
about 35-50mm with an extremely shallow depth of field.

Because I am giving an example of how well a lens like 35mm or 50mm works, I'm not saying that is how it should be shot, with either 35 or 50. Again, read the title of the theme, and don't look too deep into it.

Slipz I think we may have a problem with EXIF data on images from GT5, My entry below shows 35mm (Check) F1.0!!! (Error) I shot it at F1.4 as in the rules but the data shows otherwise. I'm going back into GT5 just to check. My Entry May change depending on what is found.

Final Entry

Exif data

Camera - Polyphony Digital Inc. Gran Turismo 5
Exposure - 0.017 sec (1/59)
Aperture - f/1.4
Focal Length - 35.5 mm

Tried to get an old Rally feel with this since most photographers used 35mm 1.4.

FINAL

Rules have been updated to reflect the theme more accurately (scenery shots are allowed, and the Miniature filter isn't) :)

Hey just so everyone knows, there's a little oddity in the game, if you set everything up to 35mm then 1.4f and then push triangle to adjust the aspect ratio, size, or panning mode, it switches the aperture to 1.0f for some weird reason. So make sure you correct it if you happen to change some settings

Yeah, that caught me off-guard a couple of times.

Oh, and do we have to use Flickr? I prefer Imageshack, and creating my own 500 by ___ thumbnails in Photoshop.
