Hey there to you all. I've been experiencing, on Chrome, adverts that will pop up in the middle of text on the site - whether they be on posts or elsewhere around the forum. They look like average hyperlinks but highlighting over them shows they are advert style, and clearly members haven't actually been posting them in. It's only started happening today for me...I cleared my cache and cookies, which fixed it briefly but pretty soon it was already back. Any possible way this could be fixed? It is getting consistently annoying at this point, hope to find a quick fix soon... :boggled:

Could it be a software you have on your computer? I know I sometimes get adds from programmes already installed on my system which pop up in a browser.

Could you post a link to one of them?

This one popped up in shem's last post. It says it links to the thread, but in reality it actually links to some kind of spam...it also varies completely from time to time, it never stays there when I visit it one time and go there again the next.

I know for a fact I didn't install anything yesterday...so I doubt it.

Hmm, you shouldn't be getting adverts because you're premium... try clearing your browsers cache.

They're not necessarily around the site itself - they're in the posts and the text around. And I tried clearing the cache, but while it did work at first it came back quickly.

And in fact, I've tried clearing cache and cookies again and nothing has happened...still same as always.

Have you tried logging out of GTP, then logging back in? Do you get them on other sites? Can you post a screeshot?

Haven't spotted it in anywhere but GTP. Clearing cookies is also effectively the same as logging out and in. I will have a screenshot soon. Gimme a few seconds to do some print screens in the meantime...

So then...this is what one of the adverts looks like...quite fitting what it came up on though.

And then I refresh the page...and suddenly, it isn't there any more.

Thats wierd. Maybe something wrong with the hyperlinks on this site. I think waiting for Jordan to have a look is the best thing.

Thing is, now it seems to have stopped again after clearing cache and cookies  It's easy to jump to conclusions in a panic

Looks like contextual links - Head to My GTPlanet, then Edit Options, scroll down to the bottom, and ensure that "Disable Text Links" is checked. That should stop them from ever appearing again 👍

Thanks SlipZ. Seems like the right kind of thing...though if they weren't disabled in the first place, why would they only be showing up now? :irked:

...And now they've started coming up again. With text links disabled in the options...I think it might have something to do with the fact it comes up all around the site and not in the posts alone...so, help again someone?

EDIT: And now I've fixed it for real. Found that it was also spreading to the Top Gear website for it, so I researched a bit more about it and it seems to have to do with plugins. Removed all of them and now they aren't showing up any more.

If you should find which plugin is the culprit, please do us the favor of letting us know.

Yup I get them too. Not only on GTP but on other sites but it only started happening since I joined. The stupid text enhance thing does my nutt in.

Ok, seems like others are seeing this too. I just noticed them today, and I have an older laptop with WinXP and IE as my browser. So far this is the only site I've noticed these ads on. Not sure if it's related but I was updating my list on mygranturismo and there were changes to that site's look. I've had laptop power problems as of late, so haven't been on for a while either. As others have mentioned, I first saw them before logging on GTP.

Best of the season to all...

Have a good one!

You may see these sorts of links, only if you are not signed in to your account. However, they will clearly be marked with "Infolinks" branding if you hover your mouse over them.

Any other auto-linked text will be the result of malware or some unscrupulous browser plugin, as was the case with C-ZETA.
