Welcome to another week of The Pit Board. I wish I could rave about how much fun last Sunday's racing was but I only managed to squeak in two rounds. I took my awesome wife out of town for the weekend to celebrate her birthday and out of no where she said I could bring the racing rig so I wouldn't miss out. (Woohoo!) Well, it was all going really well at first... 55" plasma TV, plenty of furniture to set up on and a really good internet connection. Excited to start spinning a few laps, I was almost ready to go. All I had left to do was switch the inputs on the TV to HDMI 2.... LOCKED OUT!!! AHHHHHHH!!! Frantic calls to the front desk and maintenance yielded nothing. Fifteen minutes before race time, I managed to monkey rig things but only had it in black and white with dizzying hum bars running up and down the screen. I don't know how hillracing deals with it!
Okay, enough of my rambling. I want to get more into detail about what information and data is being recorded in
SNAIL Results. Last week I had mentioned the
Driver Count Pivot. I brought this up because last month there was quite a stir about grid numbers and how the league should shrink the number of divisions. The over all perception leads us to believe that going to 4 divisions would resolve the low numbers issue. One of the many sections contained in the SNAIL Results spreadsheet is a tab called Driver Count Pivot. Since the very first official SNAIL league night (when there was only one division), the number of drivers for each division, every week including last Sunday, has been kept track of. Not only are the numbers logged, but totals, averages and several mad graphs have been cooked up to illustrate the ebb and flow of weekly grid numbers. Definitely something to look over next time you open the document.
Among the many
league responsibilities, each division has a data specialist. After the racing is all over, the D.S. collects the race data and records it into the SNAIL Results document. There is a tab for each division. The data recorded for every race that evening includes: Drivers in attendance, total points for the night, who got pole, where you started and finished, if you placed on the podium (and how often), gap times for all finishes, total race time and your best race lap. There is a huge amount of useful information for us there. Although the cars and tracks change weekly, time comparisons with your division are very helpful in finding out just how far ahead/behind you were. There are times that feel like you just got smoked but in reality, your rivals fastest lap was only .145 seconds faster than yours. You may find that even though you were bested in a race, you had that fast lap of the race. It is great food for thought when you are grinding practice laps by yourself. It gives you concrete data to work with. Heck, it's also pretty cool to see how you measure up with the other divisions!! I will let this tab be for now. The sheer depth of what is done with this data, from the graphs and charts to how important it is when promotion and relegation time comes may be too much for tonight.
There is another "tab" I would like to bring to your attention. It is the "month" tab. Simply labeled
2013.04... This one has become one of my latest favorites. This one has all the monthly point totals. What place are you in this month? How many points does the driver ahead of you have? Is it 1 or 20? Who is hot on your trail? This tab in SNAIL Results is where to get all that info! Hint: Worth a look right before the last night of the month!! Along with your point totals, this tab also records your monthly trophies for Gold, Silver and Bronze races. If you scroll down, there is another goody waiting for you. There is a breakdown of lap times, total times, finishes and point totals that have been blended across all divisions to help see where you are in the SNAIL world. I think kcheeb will have a better explanation of the breakdown and how it works. Pretty sophisticated stuff. Again, this is a must see for all SNAILs!
One more before I call it a night. The latest addition to the SNAIL Results document is the Granstand Challenge totals. This is where you can find out where you are in Granstand points. I can't emphasize enough how cool this document is. Take some time and give it a look. There is a ton of great info there.
Again, thanks to ALL SNAILs for making this such a great league!!
