So I saw this and it triggered some thoughts.

It made me wonder, "so what will life be like a hundred years from now?" In what ways do you think technology will advance? What changes do you think modern transportation will go through? Will we have cured cancer or other major diseases? Will we have explored Mars? Or even go as far as colonization? What about food? How will it be produced? What about video games and television sets? Or hospitals? Or schools and education?

Just what do you think is going to advance (or even stay stagnant/degrade), how, and why?

Can we even begin to guess? I mean, what did people in 1900 envision for the year 2000? I think in the next 100 years, technology will advance ten-fold compared to how it evolved in the last hundred years. It's hard to comprehend such a leap, and what's possible. We will certainly not be driving gasoline-powered cars, watching LCD televisions, or listening to MP3s.

Decided to make the thread huh. Cool, there's going to be some crazy predictions. It would be nice to see a glimpse into the future to find out what the cars are going to look like. They'll probably have more hands free stuff, like the Lexus that parallel parks itself, just more advanced.

Nuclear war will have happened. We will be all living in little villages and farming with plows.

We will certainly not be driving gasoline-powered cars.

Until the last drop of oil is sucked up from the Earth, we'll always have gas powered cars.

Transportation wise I don't imagine much changing. We'll all still be bumbling down roads in a four-wheeled vehicle. Nobody is going to flying to the park or to the job in their own personal aircraft or anything.

Mars will have been explored by humans. Colonized? Maybe. Not by thousands of people or even hundreds. We'll surely have some nut up there though.

Cures for diseases will be found, but we'll never cure them all. If we can't cure one or two major diseases by 2100 than that sucks.

America won't be the most powerful country anymore. I expect the countries around the Persian Gulf to be in charge. They've got a bunch of oil. Go figure.

I think that AIDS will be able to be cured by then, if not just a monthly or bi-montly pill. I don't think that it'll be fatal anymore unless you neglect yourself (As is the case today).

We'll still be puttering around in gasoline cars, I know that much. We're stubborn people, and it took us forever to get off the horse.

The American economy will be nice and steady I hope....

Given that I'd be 114 by the time we hit the next century, the miracles of medicine may in fact allow me to reach that age without much of a problem. That being said, it all depends on what you like to believe as to how things will happen in the future. My guesses?

- Big war, probably in Europe or the Middle-East. Lots of folks die thanks to new technologies, may even see the unthinkable happen in the United States or the UK (ie, nuclear weapons, EMP, etc), a pretty good bunch of chaos.
- Minor war, the next "American Civil War"? Predictions don't put it out of question, but I doubt we'd see it happen any time soon...
- Post-war(s), emergence of regional collective governments, possibility of global government seeming entirely possible.
- Travel and colonization of Mars seems realistic at the least, presumably shared between the US/Allies and China.
- May see the irradiation of AIDS, some forms of cancer, and hopefully things such as autism and diabetes.
- Minimal use of petroleum, extensive use of "alternate" fuels such as solar, wind, and bio-power. I'd hope the technology would be caught-up by then...

Well assuming that the myans are wrong, and the world doesn't end in 2012, Humanity will pretty much be the same it has always been, over-populating, money/ power-hungry, intolerant, following stupid un-proven causes, behind war-monger leaders, and being duped by religous twisting. But I am sure that technology will have greatly increased, not geared to what would be best for humanity, rather to what is most profitable.

I think that holographics will replace tv/ video games, and cars may still exist though probably completely controlled by a computer. All disease should be erradicated, but suppression of illness is far more profitable (just ask the FDA), than curing it. Computers may actually be implanted into the brain, or be able to intercept brain-waves. But I am sure that Light-Sabres will exist by then.

As long as humanity doesn't blow itself up with weapons more powerful than nuclear warheads, humanity will exist same as always, only with better increasing technology and knowledge. I hope I am wrong and Humanity finds a way to help and work with itself, but sadly it hasn't happened much to date. The most powerful people still control the masses and 'life' in general.

Sorry on being so optimistic, but look at the Light Side at least we may have light-sabers. lol

Nuclear war will have happened. We will be all living in little villages and farming with plows.

Thats a scary thought, specially if the cold-war's feared 'Mutually Assured Destruction' comes to be. If complete Nuclear War happened today, by 2100 we would just barely be coming out of a 'Radiation Contaminated State'. Not sure how the Human Race could survive, without an evalutionary response.

Big war, probably in Europe or the Middle-East. Lots of folks die thanks to new technologies, may even see the unthinkable happen in the United States or the UK (ie, nuclear weapons, EMP, etc), a pretty good bunch of chaos.

I agree that may definately be a possiblity, by rogue nations.

- Minor war, the next "American Civil War"? Predictions don't put it out of question, but I doubt we'd see it happen any time soon...

I would consider Coup D'etat a higher possibility than a 2nd civil war.

- Post-war(s), emergence of regional collective governments, possibility of global government seeming entirely possible.

A global government could be a possibility, but I think that would only happen in the case of, contact with an aggressive alien race, either a violent race or a 'peace-maker' race.

- Travel and colonization of Mars seems realistic at the least, presumably shared between the US/Allies and China.

This still is not feasable, and may not be for far more than 93 years, due to misplaced technological growth, and under-funded research.

- May see the irradiation of AIDS, some forms of cancer, and hopefully things such as autism and diabetes.

This could be a possibility right now, but the drug companies, insurance companies, and the FDA care more about suppression than cures; suppression is more profitable.

- Minimal use of petroleum, extensive use of "alternate" fuels such as solar, wind, and bio-power. I'd hope the technology would be caught-up by then...

Yet again possible right now, if not for the economic hold the petroleum industry has on the world, and again profit is the key.

By 2100, this thread will be referenced by Famine III as he calls repost on a "What will 2200 be like?" thread.

I've always thought that technology progresses in a snow-ball falling down the hill affect. As we invent more, and discover more, new doors are opened. So much has changed in the last 100-50 years, I can't imagine what it will be like 100 years from now. The advances will be insane. What I'm trying to say is that I hope they create virtual reality porn.

There will probably be a good sized war at some point, guessing in the middle east around the time oil becomes around $300 per barrel. The middle east will be unorganized and the US, UK, and other Allied nations will end up winning after several years of fighting and spending trillions of dollars.

China will become a major player in the world, they will go to the moon, they build their own space station and they will develop beyond the point of Communism.

Space travel as a whole will be better. A manned mission to Mars will happen and we will start sending good probes to Alpha Centari.

The will be major advances in science and medicine. A better cancer treatment will be developed, a huge advancement in quantum mechanics will take place, and the same goes for astrophysics.

Technology will grow 10 fold which means personal computers with several yobibit's of space in them and be very small. Personal music devices will continue adding more crap into them as well as mobile phones. Land phone lines will be replaced with fibre optics and very few homes will even have the need for them. Everything will connect to the internet some how as well.

Cars will run on hydrogen, power will come from the sun, wind, or water, and the rain forests and endangered species will be making a come back after stricter laws are put into place.

A good mass transit system will be implemented in the US. Airplanes will become faster and safer as well with fewer hassles at the gate.

I'm not looking forward to the future at all. With the loss of gasoline, cars will never be the same, for me anyway. I couldn't care less that an electric motor can be a lot faster, without the hustle and bustle and the noise, it will like watching a race on tv and muting it, just boring as hell.

One government ruling the world, not such a good idea in my opinion. Looks more like a dictatorship to me. If we don't like a law said super ruler(s) makes, that's tough luck. At least now you have the ability to move to different countries with different rules.

I look at the future of the world as I look at the future of cars. Each are quickly deteriorating into rubbish and they will never be the same, or as good as they once were. I need a time machine or something.

I guess I'm just a pessimist, but w/e

China is already a major player in the world. They are our bankers.

Oh, and Google will land a man on Mars before the US Government does.

They are a major player but not so much in terms of political say. Sure they have a growing economy, but they do not have a respected government and that is hurting them on the world stage. They do not like it either, they want to be just like the US was at one time. It's the Chinese mentality, they strive to be the best.

Also with China I think you will see a minor was over them and there SAR's as well as on Taiwan. They want that land and it's eventually going to turn a bit ugly.

It's the laws that get passed I'll be afraid of. And the economic strain of supporting so many people who will now live far beyond 65.

I think life will kinda suck, whatever it may be.

We'll be the old geezers telling the "when I was a boy" stories.

I wanna hear the music though, maybe it will actually be good.

Yes, but by the same token, Mankind has experienced large spans of time when Technology, kind of hits a wall, and grows stagnant. Historically we do experience periods of incredible technological advance too, usually lasting around a decade. Technology has been greatly increasing over the past 10 or 12 years, I think we are due for a stumbling block soon.

We also have a tendancy on losing information/ technology throughout history. We still are not 100% sure how the Egyptians built The Pyramids with such accuracy. Also we are probably the WORST generation in documented information, in case of a catastropic disaster. If all-out Nuclear War happened, it would destroy a great amount of knowledge, by crippling the infrastructure of Utilities, Communication, and Computer Systems. Because all of our information, from this generation, is contained on Computers; if there was no power to run a computer, all the vast amounts of information contained within would be useless. And the same type of scenario would unfold, in the case of 'polar reversal', large meteor strike, volcanic black-out, or most other catastrophic disasters.

But then again for all we know, a Black Hole may have opened up and is about swallow the Earth tonight, at least I wouldn't have to go to work tomarrow.

But really we are feeding machines with our bodies, while our minds are in a replicating virtual simulation. lol

I remember way back when... Sex-Bots weren't even made with genitalia.

Everything has been done before, and usually better.

I can't see the Allied powers picking a war with China unless it is completely necessary, and if there ever would be a fight, I'd suspect that it starts with the Russians long before the rest of the OSCE gets involved (well, mostly NATO anyway).

It is interesting to note that most of us see some kind of war coming, but the extent of what it is to be is certainly a mystery. We'll have to see how things work out in Iraq before anything solid can happen.

Let's run that by one more time: China is our banker.

It doesn't matter what they are; if they turn off the credit fountain and dump their dollars, we're screwed.

The US and Allies won't go to war, I'm saying they will have an inteternal war with either their SAR's or Taiwan.

Nobody's going to touch Taiwan. Computer nerds around the world would be pissed that their hardware manufacturers would be conquered.

The Human race will be extinct. 99942 Apophis is an Astroid that will strike earth on April 13, 2036.

wikipedia

0.00222% chance of hitting us... that's almost as bad as one of Saddam Hussein's scud missiles in the Gulf War...

It's also about three football fields long...not big enough to have environmental effects, it will merely annihilate the area of impact.

Though I suppose that's a bit understated. :dunce:

Hopefully Gran Turismo 5 will have been released by then. We'll also see a massive increase in population (in the United Kingdom anyway). Methane will be the next Carbon Dioxide.

... and we will have female robots by then. :D

I think by 2100 like 95% of us will be kinda dead, so I really don't care ;).

@ AIDS : Atm patients have a pretty good chance to survive 25 years, that should improve a lot within the next 20 years, no need to wait for 2100 I hope ;)

I reckon a sort of matrix thing will happen, except it won't be machines conquering humans, it will be humans learning how to download a brain into a computer, and doing so to achieve immortality (sort of). Everything would be networked so if you want to see new sights or whatever you just file transfer yourself to a server in, say, Thailand, download into a kind of waiting human body or robot body, and take a walk around, then upload again when you're done. Or just do it all in virtual reality. We'll be able to back ourselves up, endlessly compete in the 1965 Monaco Grand Prix, live Star Wars, whatever we want. Then after some time we might get bored and either hibernate for ages or erase ourselves or something.

Dunno if that will be in 100 years time though, but I do think we're headed that way via bionics, artificial implants and so on.

Sorry if I misunderstand you and am stating the obvious, but just to be sure, the article referenced in the first post was written in 1900 or 1901 and predicts the world in 2001. Actually, I must also say I did find it fascinating reading, and thanks for posting it! 👍
