I was looking on Kotaku and they had a list of the top ten most expensive video game budgets. #2 caught my eye:

"2. Gran Turismo: $80 million
In development for over 5 years, the official budget was $60 million. In 2008"

Anybody know about this?

Not really, but thats many millions! If its true they re really putting alot of effort in the game:idea:!

I've heard this figure from multiple sources, from gaming insiders, to (knowledgeable) shop owners, to blogs and gaming news feeds.

Not a surprising figure given the level of development commitment by PD for the "new" platform, and you know they will still make a profit.

Maybe it's got something to do with exchange rates between Dollar and Yen,
Kaz only recently mentioned the 6o million, i don't think the delay will add another 20 million.

I'm also remember 60m said by KY sometime ago.
BTW - I wonder what's is the 1st place (MW2?), maybe you can give the link...

Yeah GTA IV is on #1 with $100 million...

GTA IV is an multi console title... but I think GT5 will never bring that $80 mio. back to Sony... GT5 is an fail for Sony I think... even if it will be the best game in the gaming history... And I think till release in 2014 it will cost an extra $40 mio.

Ofcourse it will bring Sony profits, or at least break even with the current retail prices being much higher than a PS2 game.
GT always sells millions at least, so do the maths, and don't forget the PS3 consoles being sold extra.

Where is the 5? It just says Gran Turismo. Perhaps that's the cost of all of them put together.

At $50 a pop, they only need to sell 1.6m copies to break even.

GT1 sold 10.9m. GT2 sold 9.4m. GT3 sold 14.9m. GT4 sold 10.8m. Do you reckon GT5 will sell less than one-sixth the number of copies of any other full release?

We can go further if you like. GTConcept sold 1.6m despite never having a North American release. GT4P sold 1.4m despite never having a North American release. GT5P sold 4.7m. Hell, even GTPSP sold 1.8m.

GT5 would break even in one week, even assuming the $80m figure applies just to GT5.

GT5 doesn't need to bring back $80 Million though does it. During the same development cycle they have sold over 4 million copies of GT5:P and almost 2 million copies of GT PSP. At $40 each they have more than likely already made back that $80 million. Anything they get from GT5 sales is just the gravy ontop :)

Assuming it is just relating to GT5 then it's quite pleasing to know it's the highest budget for a single platform game. 👍

I doubt It'll have quite the same global hysteria as MW2 and Avatar had recently but hopefully there will be a worldwide release so that first week/month figures are news worthy.

Not strictly true. You're omitting a vast number of other overheads and costs.
I bet only about $10-$15 of that $50 goes towards covering development costs.

And that the game will actually cost $70-$80 in the shops...

How many consoles did Sony sold? I know something about 4 mio. ? So let´s say they will sell 2 mio. GT5 copies... And as mubble said, they don´t get the full 50$ for the game... I also think they make 10-20 $ profit from each copy...

I know there will be bundles out and so on but I think $80 mio. for an game is too much... Also I´m frustrated so I see everything about GT5 negative, forgive me :D

GT4 was $70 on the shelves, which is ballpark £40-£45 or E50-E55.

And we all seem to forget a lot of the developing costs also apply to GT6 for they have mentioned GT6 is easier to create for it builds on the changes they've made in GT5.
They've basically started from scratch with GT5 and as we all know; it is easier to go from 1 to 100 than going from 0 to 1, by which i mean less effort/ time and therefor less costly to create.

Wouldn't it work out more, as surely the retailers take a chunk of the retail price, then we have to factor in production cost of the disks plus packaging etc?

Either way, I am sure PD will make a mint as I would think they will sell at least 7million.

I would imagine production and advertising costs etc are included in the budget. And the $50 price Famine used is not the full RRP, gmaes usually sell for around $70 I think in the US and £40-£45 over here when they're new. I don't know if Sony would get as much as the $50 price Famine used or less but there's still a point being made that seems to have been overlooked by some. Even if only $30 of the RRP goes back to Sony they still only need to sell just over 2.5 million copies of the game at full RRP to break even. Then Sony has the sales of GT5:P, then Sony has money from any increase in PS3 sales that GT5 will no doubt cause.

Actually here in the US they are around $60 for most new games. Sony and PD will make a fortune with GT5 no doubt. (If they ever release the damn thing!)

Of course, and as mentioned I am sure Sony will Make a mint. The latest modern warfare sold (and is still selling) a Billion $ +. GT5 has all the potential to make an absolute mint and will no doubt.

PS

I thought the phyisical production and packaging had not yet been figured in with that $80 development costs as the game as far as we are aware has not gone into production. (physical)

Sony will also take their cut for licensing, and as you say there's production, packaging and distribution and the retailers take their cut. The developer doesn't get a particularly large chunk from the sale of each copy.

Be glad your not in australia, the majority of shops will ask $120 and in N.Z it`s probably closer to $150. We always get ripped hard down here.

whoa, no kidding since the conversion rate for us dollar (60) -> nz dollar (81) and australian dollar (64) (decimals ignored).

So you're getting ripped alright.

over here in sweden games retail for ~600 swedish kronor, which translates to 85 us dollars.

and I thought games were expensive over here;)
