I know there are a few of us here that like it... For me its more of a love/passion... But I wanted to created a thread of its own as it very different from anything else. This thread is for anyone who enjoys the slowed amplified grooves that delivers more spine shattering bass riffs then anything else in the world.

When I need my fill I usually listen to Corrosion of Conformity (Not there punk and crossover stuff), Clutch, Monster Magnet and Masters of Reality.. But that hardly scratches the surface for me as I constantly look for more to feed my obsession.

Rawr.

I don't know exactly what that genre includes/excludes but Wilco wins everything.

Take Black Sabbath, slow it down and amplify the grooves. That is pretty much the recipe that starts every stoner rock band. Every band is different though and most of the really good stuff was done in the 90's.

Here are some examples to start this thread off... But I don't think it will go anywhere but its worth a shot. Maybe I'll influence someone :D

(Possibly one of the greatest riffs of all time)

(Pepper Keenan is a god to me)

(John Garcia and Josh Homme are geniuses)

Blah blah blah blah... Yeah if you are a fan of Black Sabbath or any other blues rock then this stuff is right down your alley. Or if your a Doom/Sludge fan you will defiantly like some of the heavier bands. My awareness of this genre came when I listened to Dragonaut by Sleep and slowly got more drawn in. Like a lot of other genres in music to most on the outside a lot of it sounds similar until you start actually listening to it.

Added Clutch and Kyuss (reminded me of RHCP) to my favorites, I have always liked QOTSA and Fu Manchu was interesting. As for the rest, meh, but a lot closer to my tastes than most of the usual dross out there. Sorry, not much to add, most of my music comes from the 60s and 70s with a smattering of 90s.

Sorry guys, but even though it's almost 40yrs old, you cannot beat Jimmi Hendrix or Pink Floyd for the best stoner rock. Deep Purple never goes wrong either with Smoke on the water. I mean, listen to the first couple of minutes of this live version they did in Montreux, absolute magic when baked.👍

I don't want to nitpick but Pink Floyd and Deep Purple (I love both bands) have nothing in common with Stoner Rock. Pink Floyd is much more art/psychedelic where the songs are similar in pace but have completely different feels. Deep Purple is just good ol' fashion Hard Rock and defiantly closer to the raunchy desert sound that bands like Sleep created in the 70's and 80's.

Just because a band incorporates drugs into their music doesn't make it "Stoner Rock." Hendrix doesn't have a slow or deep enough tempo.. His songs are faster paced and uses much higher pitches. That doesn't take anything away from any of these musicians, they're just completely different when it comes to the sound and aesthetics of the music they created.

One zero. Zero zero one one. One zero one zero one.

Clutch = Awesome.

QOTSA, Kyuss, and I think Down has some stoner rock elements to it. It's a good genre, unfortunately can get a little boring the deeper you go into it. Stoner Metal is good as well. Electric Wizard, At The Gates Of Slumber (I think that's the name??).

Sleep is great. I'll be trying to make it down to Portland for the show there.

Electric Wizard is amazing as well.

Heavy Lord, High on Fire (ex-Sleep,) Railsplitter, Thou are all good choices, though fall more towards "sludge."

Dead Meadow and Witch are a couple favorites as well, and not heavy like the aforementioned bands.

Second Self - "Why Not?"

Def check this video out, the song starts off in a jazz groove, but patiently develops into a stoner/jam rock anthem. Enjoy!

Kyuss recently reunited under the name Kyuss Lives!, minus Josh Homme unfortunately... Here's some of my favorites from one of my favorite bands:

Bumppppp!!

Kyuss Lives! is going to be here in SF at the wrong damn time. I'm likely going to be recovering from surgery at that time so I'm likely going to miss it. Ugh. I'm going to miss Down in a week too probably so ****.

Anyways, lets get on to some stoner rock/metal. Either is fine because it follows the same awesome principle. Heavy distorted bluesy riffs, bass lines that flow like a drunk hobos piss stream and hard hitting drum patterns.

I see lots of you are familiar with all the greats, Kyuss, High on Fire, Electric Wizard, Clutch, Fu Manchu and QOTSA (which I hate for whatever reason)

Here are some new favorites of mine. A friend turned me onto Red Fang a few months ago and I couldn't help myself but fall in love with there catchy riffs and great rhythms. They don't let up either, they got some gnarly heavy stuff and stick to the basics. What you see is what you get.

Another new one to me is Lo-Pan. Much like Red Fang, in fact they are a LOT like RF. Well I guess for the most part, everything I said for Red Fang goes for anything else in this genre.

There's hundred more where that came from. :mischievous:

"@Hugo Not to sound like a dick but Led Zep isn't a stoner rock band. Stoner rock has nothing to do with the music discussing drugs or not. Its just a genre name."

No worries Prosthetic

@Sammers Yeah Witch is awesome.

@Hugo Not to sound like a dick but Led Zep isn't a stoner rock band. Stoner rock has nothing to do with the music discussing drugs or not. Its just a genre name.

Other news, Kyuss Lives! is apparently going to be releasing new content early next year. Holy hell yeah.

One of my new favorite underground Stoner rock bands. They album 'Please Tune In' is short but brilliant. And completely free on Bandcamp. Anyone that is a fan of Stoner rock or any 70's Psych rock will surely love this band.

Probably my favorite of all their stuff. Great little instrumental that just puts you in the right mood.

Welcome to GTP Phantom! Awesome welcome to see a fellow member with good music taste. Countach sounds familiar but I can't recall hearing anything from them. But I like what I hear 👍

Adding Youtube videos is easy, if you know what to do ;)

There are two different URL's you will see with youtube for the most part.

This is what you get when you click on a video after a search

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKPicUnsPPg

In which case you copy every after the '=' and put it in the youtube tags in the advance reply box.

Should look like this...

This is what you get if you click on a video in the suggested box, in which case you copy everything from the '=' to the '&' and put it in the Youtube tags, this is what you should get.

Hope to see you around GTP. 👍

Umm..Well..It did'nt work too well...Gotta work tommorrow ,so I'm off to bed,but I'll try again tommorrow..(with better results hopefully hehe)

No one mentioned Phish???String Cheese Incident???Cheese Dollar????Primus??Mr.Bungle?? Man what kinda stoners are you?? Maybe I'm gettin to old for this $h!t

What about me on my bass?? LOL......I can play the phatest bass lines all smoked out

And why would you say Hendricks isnt a stoner band? LOL

He used to smoke joints while on stage duh...just because its 40 years old doesnt mean it isnt stoner rock. Its just depending the era (the times) brother. But I guess you can say most bands in that era were stoned too....so maybe you're right depending on how you look at it.

:idea:embarrassed:k gonna try this once..

What you need to do is click on the youtube icon in the advance reply window, and put the code in there.

Can't think of a better way to enjoy some purp.

The band that really opened up the genre too me. Just listen to that opening riff.. The devil is entering the arena.

Like I said, stoner rock is a genre is not exclusive to drug use. Just because Jimmy smoked doesn't mean its a stoner band. Soulja Boy smokes, so I guess hes stoner rock? Nope. Stoner is 100% based on the instrumental aspects of genre. And considering the first stoner bands started in the early 90's... All those bands that you listed have no relation to the genre.

The closest thing to the genre 40 years ago would be Sabbath. Listen and learn.

Its all about the fuzz.

Dude don't get me started on music. I have been playing in rock n jazz bands for over 20 years. Anything can be stoner rock. And its funny you say black sabbath is a stoner band. Well I guess NIB and Sweet Leaf make the list then. Whatever....this is why I don't talk about music on GTP. I can argue all day about music. So since u kno so much about music...what do u play? The CD or is it an iPod? LOL...and seriously..I listed Phish and u knocked that. IMO u don't kno too much then brother. Jam on!

Here's my favorite stoner metal song:

The stoner/ doom/ sludge genre is definitely my favorite genre in metal, especially New Orleans sludge (Crowbar, Soilent Green, Eyehategod). There's nothing better than a good, slow burning rift that's heavy as jackhammer. Horns!

Cool, is this relevant? No.

Anything can be stoner rock.
Its a genre, also known as Desert Rock but people usually stick to the stoner rock tag as its more recognized.

"Stoner Rock and stoner metal are terms describing sub-genres of rock and metal music. They are typically slow-to-mid tempo, low-tuned, and bass-heavy, incorporating elements of psychedelic rock, blues-rock and doom metal into a more repetitive and riff-centred style. Other common traits include melodic vocals and ‘retro’ production. The genre emerged during the early 1990s and was pioneered by the Californian band Kyuss."

Non of the bands you listed meets this, therefor they aren't stoner.

And its funny you say black sabbath is a stoner band. Well I guess NIB and Sweet Leaf make the list then.

I never said that, I said that the closest thing to Stoner Rock 40 years ago was Black Sabbath. Why? Because 95% of the Stoner Rock bands in existence are direct descendents of Sabbaths music. Its basically Blues rock but a whole lot heavier. NIB and Sweet Leaf are much more appropriate for this thread.

You do realize using text speak is against GTP TOS? What do I play? I've played half a dozen instruments from Elementary to High School but stopped do to lack of interest. I suggest you cut the "I'm older and smarter then you" crap and stop putting words in my mouth. That's a nasty habit that only hurts you. I never "knocked" Phish, I know who they are. They are a Jam band, not a Stoner Rock band. This is a Stoner/Desert rock thread, you are way off subject which also is against TOS. Either you start posting stuff on the genre or closely related ones, (sludge, doom) or get out. I know plenty about music, and I know the subtle differences of the genre, and I can assure you that you are way off track.

@88foxbodyfan

Electric Wizard is my favorite of the stoner doom, excellent stuff. Eyehategod fan? Sweet! Quite possibly the heaviest band in existence.

To the guy talking about the classic rock bands (Pink Floyd, Phish, Hendrix), while those bands have some songs with elements of stoner rock in them, they wouln't be classified in that genre. If I were to pick a classic band that pioneered the stoner rock genre, it would have to be Blue Cheer.
