Prologue: I begin this championship series with GT4 at 97.3% completed. This is the first time I have done this portion of the game and I decided to A-spec the whole thing. When I started GT4 this was the series I most wanted to compete in. It is ironic that I left it for last. Nevertheless, after discovering this website and perusing many posts and advice for the series, I got started. As I soon discovered and as documented by many in the ‘Race Report’ section, it is not hard. I included the boring facts and setup data and I tested each track about an hour or so during each qualifying session, trying for a setup to keep the tires in check for as long as possible. My goal was to keep the stints as long as or longer than the AI and to put in a good lap time as well. I also read “smaug terrible’s” GT All Stars report and liked the way he wrote it, so I turned this boring series report into an F1 style editorial, as you would read in a low budget race magazine. I assigned each FGT AI car by color into a proper F1 constructor so I could track it with a little more interest. (if you are a fan of any of these teams, please don’t take this report personal. They were having a bad year altogether and got lapped in every race. But they did race each other well.) Suggestions/Corrections welcome, as this is my first and only report. Here goes:

Race Story: Red Bull Racing (RBR) qualified up front with an impressive first session showing, making a strong inaugural statement to the paddock. As the race began it became apparent that Friday practice had served the team well and along with consistent lap times and even tire wear, RBR would not be challenged today. RBR took the lead from the pole and steadily pulled away from the field turn by turn. As RBR approached the last place Renault on lap 18 to begin lapping the field, fierce blocking tied the leader up for several turns. As RBR made their way through, Mclaren and BMW were not keen to this and put the leader in the wall on the bloody red tarmac section (quick right/left section on the back side). This spin flat sided RBR tires, which forced them to pit a lap earlier than planned which would prompt Ferrari to make adjustments as well. RBR put in strong hot laps to catch the field again and they finally muscled through, but all this allowed Ferrari to over come their slow start, modify their pit strategy and make a late charge after the slow opening 1/3 of race. Mclaren followed Ferrari as both the teams opted for a 14 lap pit strategy. This seemed to work for the middle stints, however Mclaren would not last and began to fall off late. BMW, who was very strong early seem to have mechanical issues and fell way back in the closing laps. RBR was the class of the field and took the win and the points. Final: RBR (1st), Ferrari (2nd) and Mclaren (3rd) Lotus (4th) with Renault (5th) and BMW (6th).

Race Story: Early laps saw fierce battles in the draft. BMW and Renault made valiant attempts to muscle past Red Bull Racing (RBR), but were held off for 10 laps with blocking maneuvers by RBR and BMW until the stewards weighed in, so the drivers took turns leading the pack while Ferrari, Lotus and Mclaren had nothing to give the battle and watched farther and farther back as the gap stretched. All pitted on the same 13th lap, since no-one wanted to give up an advantage. RBR blew the toe set-up, which meant they either pitted at 13 or let off on the small corner on entry, but doing that allowed BMW and Renault to stay in the draft. BMW and Renault left the first pit stop ahead, since RBR filled the tank (inadvertently) and the teams stretched a 6 sec lead that RBR had to reel in over the next several laps and stops. This remained the story for much of the first half of the race, as RBR modified their pit strategy to take the lead and began to extend it by 2-3 laps, but in the end the field would be no match. RBR would win the race with pit strategy and better late stint lap times and set the pace for the season. Final: RBR (1st), Renault (2nd) and BMW (3rd) made a come back in points, while Ferrari (4th) with Mclaren (5th) on their tale finished some time back. Lotus (6th) brought up the rear several laps down as all teams finished mirroring their qualifying positions. RBR vowed to test setup more during next weeks Friday practice so that no extraordinary measures would be needed next week.

Race Story: RBR came to New York to make another statement. An impressive qualifying effort put the team on the pole again and they never looked back. Ferrari was poised in the 2nd spot to put some pressure on the lead team of RBR but that was not to be today. From the time the lights went out RBR was uncatchable. They had put in many laps in practice to put together a set-up that would allow 13-14 lap stints for tires only, with petrol on every other stop. In fact after lapping the field on lap 17, the team put in a 15 lap stint and set their fastest lap time yet. Ferrari, feeling the pressure from last weeks dismal 4th place finish, were under strict orders to push, as they attempted to compete with an early stop on lap 12 lap, hoping to catch RBR out on old rubber and perhaps gap the leader in the pits. Mclaren and Lotus took the team from Maranello’s lead and followed suit. However, RBR’s worn tires seemed to embrace the Big Apples’ pavement, especially rounding the ‘carrousel’ located at the NW portion of the course, where they enjoyed a strong exit giving the RBR car a massive burst down the longest straight and thus keeping their times consistent and unbeatable. Renault would not be persuaded by the other teams because they, too, had another good effort this week and were able to push 14 circuits around this 2+ mile course before stopping for tires and occasionally fuel. Ferrari and Mclaren pitting early meant they had to stay out longer after they realized RBR would not be caught, and because they had such a drop-off in times on those late laps, they were forced to fall back to their planned 13 laps per stop schedule. BMW continued to struggle with grip as they rounded the course 13 times before regularly stopping for tires. Lotus just did not have the power needed to compete down the two long straights New York offers which kept the company car in the rear of the field all day. As the race wore on, Renault remained on their 14 lap routine, as Ferrari and Mclaren alternated between 13 and 14 lap stints. BMW and Lotus kept there pace steady with a 12 lap routine, as they were not a factor and appeared to treat the race as an extended test session. Final: RBR (1st), Renault (2nd) Ferrari (3rd) Mclaren (4th) while BMW (5th) and Lotus (6th) brought up the rear several laps down.

Race story: With another stellar qualifying effort the paddock knew that RBR was again the team to beat. Really the battle today was for 2nd place. BMW showed their speed again with Renault a close third on the grid. Mclaren and Ferrari would battle for the scraps as Lotus, fourth on the grid, with evidently some new aero bits was set to show improvement from the previous race efforts. As the race began, RBR had trouble with their launch control and stumbled out of the gate. Soon left in 5th place, the first few turns saw a drafting battle between all 6 teams that extended through the opening lap. As the collection of tires began to warm, RBR stretched their legs, as in previous races and the remaining battle was for the field to sort out. BMW and Renault, whose speed was shown in Motegi Speedway, battled through the opening laps as Lotus chased and Ferrari watched them go. Mclaren must have been stunned to see their week’s worth of work amount to beans as they brought up the rear some 100 yds behind in last. As RBR lapped the competitors on lap 13, while they pitted, the race was indeed already over lest some mechanical gremlin foil their day. RBR pitted on Lap 14 and re-entered still in 1st place. Lotus indeed had something to prove as they mixed it up with BMW and Renault through the first ½ of the event. But then on Lap 27, with RBR’s tires reaching their limit, a slight bit of contact was seen as RBR lapped the field for the 3rd time, and as Lotus tried to stay with the speedy BMW and Renault, they touched wheels with the RBR and this slight contact sent the Green/Yellow car into the sand and out of the draft, as it also raised the attention of the stewards. In the end it was seen as a racing incident and not intentional, so no penalty was issued. Just the same, Lotus must have sustained some damage, either mechanically or mentally because they fell to the back of the field never to return. As RBR continued to stretch it legs and its dominance the remaining teams of BMW and Renault continued their battle for 2nd all the way to the stripe. Ferrari and Mclaren apparently were only here because they had to be, not because they expected to compete. Final: RBR (1st), BMW (2nd) Renault (3rd) Mclaren (4th) while Ferrari (5th) with Lotus (6th) brought up the rear.

Race Story: RBR found themselves on pole for the 5th straight week. The team worked hard on their race setup, however, as the GVS circuit was showing the teams this weekend that 8 laps per stint would be all that was allowed. RBR thought different. As the flagged dropped, and RBR began pulling away from the field it was evident that the real race today would be against the aged tarmac of the course. No team was able to make it farther than the 8 laps, except RBR. After the 1st pit stops, where the entire field entered and exited together, the RBR team began testing out their efforts from Friday practice and were able to go farther and farther on their tires than the others. As the race wore on, and the field stretched out, all teams were apparently focused on their race and not the others around them. No battles, no attacking, no action at all. Each team carried on their race in isolation as the entire field became more and more scattered about the course. BMW stayed in second place with Renault spaced 4-5 seconds back. Behind them Lotus showed resilience from last weeks disappointments and remained in 4th, some 5 seconds back, while Mclaren kept him in site 3-4 seconds back, and Ferrari ran the entire race alone at the distant end of the field. All teams kept to their 8 lap routine, entering and leaving the pit lane in the same order, for the whole race. RBR’s superior setup allowed the team to push 9 lap and 10 lap stints, with even tire wear throughout, which explained the multiple lap lead between them and the 2nd place BMW at the end of the event. Final: RBR (1st), BMW (2nd) Renault (3rd) Lotus (4th) while Mclaren (5th) with Ferrari (6th) brought up the rear.

Race story: As RBR qualified on the pole again this week, their focus was on the chassis set-up to prolong each stint and maximize each stop in the race. Their goal was tires and fuel at each stop, and to stop only 3 times. They succeeded in this and also secured the win in the process. As with the previous weeks’ event, Renault and BMW continued to fight for the remaining podium spots. They and Mclaren battled throughout the day, adjusting strategy and pace, while Lotus and Ferrari stayed true to their game plan, accepting a 4 stop race. But during the late battles, BMW and Mclaren pushed to hard on their final stint and were forced into a late, inopportune stop which allowed Lotus to gain a podium spot and the points while Ferrari, who was never competitive this day, was given a gift with 4th place, letting Mclaren and BMW to bring up the rear. RBR remained a perfect 6 for 6 and now held a commanding lead in the points with the winding streets of Monaco up next. Final: RBR (1st), Renault (2nd) Lotus (3rd) Ferrari (4th) while Mclaren (5th) with BMW (6th) brought up the rear.

Race story: The pomp and circumstance of the Monaco Gran Prix was not lost on the teams this weekend. Renault and Mclaren both offered new aero updates for the prestigious race and had high expectations for a battle with the leading RBR squad as qualifying proved to be the closest in the series thus far this season. RBR still planted their car firmly in the front of the grid, but prepared to be chased the entire day by a group of frustrated competitors. RBR offered a lighter aero package this week in hopes of extending their gas and tire mileage, as thus reducing the stops in the pit lane they require. As the race began to unfold, the teams from Renault and Mclaren battled consistently behind the leading RBR team, which did not bode well for their hopes of victory and restricted their pace and increased their pit stops. All the while, BMW and Ferrari fell back in the field, but also began a heated combat of their own. Ferrari was more competitive on this quick track than previous efforts, but still found the stints to be short and fraught with wheel spin and brake fade. BMW mistimed there late pit stops and got caught out at the end of the event, only to be in the pits while the leader took the checkered flag. Lotus, although not in contention, had the better handling car of the three but mismanaged multiple pit stops and was fortunate in their finish. All in all Renault added to their points total and kept Mclaren in their mirrors as Mclaren took the final podium spot to brighten up their series. The RBR chassis continued to impress with longer race stints and consistent laps times which all added up to the victory. Final: RBR (1st) Renault (2nd) Mclaren (3rd) Ferrari (4th) while Lotus (5th) with BMW (6th) brought up the rear.

Race Story: As the teams arrived at the unique street course in downtown Seoul it became apparent that as simple a layout as this is, it will require a bit of work to maximize the cars potential to maintain a consistent pace throughout all 100+ laps that the event has slated. RBR put many laps into their setup which turned out to be a slight departure from their previous expectations of their car. Lotus also arrived in Korea with a determination not seen this season. BMW and Renault both have shown in previous weeks that they have a car that can compete, but they along with Ferrari were not up to this weeks agenda. RBR took the pole position and the lead from the start and never looked back. Lotus kept good pace for the whole race and were never in question of a podium position. Mclaren kept a steady pace and alternated pit stop routines all day, but never could reach the Lotus to battle any farther. However on Lap 47 RBR showed that they were indeed human and displayed their only mistake thus far this season. As they were stretching their second stint of tires, they miscalculated fuel mileage and just after passing the pit in sign and rocketing down the front straight, a miss and a sputter was heard and the RBR engine began to strain for fuel. They were forced to putter around the rest of the course and coast into the pit lane, all the while relinquishing their multiple lap lead and sacrificing their pace. It mattered little in the end as Lotus remained a distant second and Mclaren finished to podium much farther back. Final: RBR (1st) Lotus (2nd) BMW (3rd) Renault (4th) while Mclaren (5th) with Ferrari (6th) brought up the rear.

Race Story: As the teams traveled to the United States and Sonoma, California where the rolling curves and blind corners of Infinion Raceway awaited them, spirits where high in the Mclaren and Renault pits. They had a solid qualifying effort and started 2nd and 3rd behind the series leader RBR squad. Opening laps had Ferrari, BMW and Lotus battling at the back of the field which made for some nervous moments during the opening 1/3 of the race. RBR was out of reach after the 1st pit stop and Mclaren and Renault were set to occupy the remaining podium spots, while Ferrari, BMW and Lotus swapped positions all day. Better fuel and tire mileage belonged to BMW and RBR who stayed on 11 and 12 lap stints all day. Everyone else was limited to 10-11 laps. Ferrari’s poor setup contributed to their finish as they lost mass amounts of time on the final lap of each stint as their tires were shredded. Lotus and BMW raced to the line for a photo finish for 5th place, which was the most exciting part of the day. Final: RBR (1st) Mclaren (2nd) Renault (3rd) BMW (4th) while Lotus (5th) with Ferrari (6th) brought up the rear.

Race Story: The teams now travel south to the hills of Monterey, California to the famed Laguna Seca raceway for an eventful Gran Prix. The 100deg F temperatures would play havoc with the cars all day as numerous off track excursions plagued every team. Every team except RBR. As Ferrari bounced back from a disastrous finish last week to qualify on the front row of the grid, they still could not find their pace. Fortunate for them, neither could the others. As the race began RBR led from the start and did not look back, as Ferrari, Mclaren and Lotus battled each other and the track for the entire afternoon. The RBR chassis showed its strength again allowing the team to put in 12 lap stints and combat the extreme temperatures as the rest of the field battled tire wear and the sand traps. Almost every lap allowed someone to find the grass, sand and occasionally the wall which made for some high stakes racing and exciting television. BMW got in the groove late in the race and pulled away from the rest of the teams, chasing the RBR squad for a number of laps, albeit they were already some laps down. Lotus and Renault found each other most every lap and watched as each one took a turn in front of the other as the laps ticked down. The finish could not come soon enough for the teams as the elements were the ultimate victors in this late afternoon ‘derby’. Final: RBR (1st) BMW (2nd) Ferrari (3rd) Mclaren (4th) while Lotus (5th) with Renault (6th) brought up the rear.

Race Story: Battling the late evening sun in Japan, this race brought some of the best competition of the season. Ferrari, again qualified 2nd on the grid and kept the leading RBR car in their sights most of the day. Staying some 6-10 seconds behind throughout the race, which was a victory in itself for the team from Italy. Mclaren kept pace a few seconds back and battled Renault for the first ½ of the event. BMW and Lotus competed with each other quite some distance back as the sun began to set on the course. Mileage and pace became the ‘Achilles’ heal for Ferrari and Mclaren as RBR put in consistent 11 lap stints which they were not able to match. The field began to splinter as the laps wore on with RBR slowly stretching their lead, finally lapping the entire field as they pit at the latter part of the race. In the end the teams finished as they qualified: Final: RBR (1st) Ferrari (2nd) Mclaren (3rd) Renault (4th) BMW (5th) and Lotus (6th) brought up the rear.

Race Story: This week the teams set to test their machines and their medal on the 12+ mile meat grinder that is the Nurburgring. A track that seemingly was built to destroy moral and man’s will. RBR tested on this track extensively in the winter, which has served them well thus far this season and supplied them a pole position qualifying effort. Ferrari matched previous weeks’ efforts with another front row qualify. Renault and Mclaren also positioned themselves well on the starting grid, as the teams prepared for this grueling event. Early on the RBR effort was stellar as they began to distance themselves from the field as usual. Ferrari and Mclaren battled nose to tail for the opening 1/3 of the race. Renault faulted with chassis setup and struggled to find grip and stability on the rugged ‘Rings back half. Lotus made advancements again this week and jumped from their last place qualifier to fight with Mclaren for the final podium spot. None of the teams would dare tempt a stint longer than 2 laps as the Nordlieffe abused the cars and the drivers making the pit stop a place of refuge from the course. The later part of the race saw the cars struggle for pace as the wear and tear began to add up in the drivers and their machines. Ferrari managed to keep themselves in the same position they qualified in the whole day. Lotus and Mclaren put quite a bit of distance from Renault and BMW. The surprise/shock on the BMW team could be seen throughout the paddock and the grandstands as the popular view was that they were the ‘Locals’ and the team to beat. Being the locals meant only that they did not have far to push the car after the event, as they were never in contention. No doubt the next time the Nurburgring host a Formula GT race it will be with another set of participants as the drivers on course today will have seen enough. Final: RBR (1st) Ferrari (2nd) Mclaren (3rd) Lotus (4th) Renault (5th) and BMW (6th) brought up the rear.

Race Story: This week the teams race in another type of mountain course. Leaving the intimidating German mountain forests they arrive in the austere panorama of Yosemite in the United States. This undulating track with blind curves and ‘elevator drop’ style braking zones will challenge the cars setup and the driver’s control. RBR qualified on pole for the 11 time in as many weeks, while Mclaren and Lotus follow. BMW rounds out the second row and will be desperate to amend last week’s debacle at the ‘Ring. Ferrari and Renault struggled with power this weekend, apparently not adjusted to the high elevation of the track. The race began as others have with RBR pulling away from the field, however Mclaren was determined to keep them in sight for as long as possible. BMW rocketed off the line and past the Lotus to stay on the Mclaren’s tale for the better part of the event. These positions would not change much as the entire field was committed to an 8 lap pace for the whole race. The top 3 positions would end this way, while Ferrari and Lotus battled all day. Renault was never able to adjust to the elevation and rode around the track in last to complete the event. Final: RBR (1st) Mclaren (2nd) BMW (3rd) Lotus (4th) Ferrari (5th) and Renault (6th) brought up the rear.

Race Story: The teams return to Japan for the final two dates of the Formula GT season. First up is Fuji Raceway, where surprisingly the race is slated to be rain free. As most of the teams test here every off-season so they know the track well. Lotus makes a statement this week qualifying on the front row behind the pole sitter RBR. BMW and Renault make up the second row while Ferrari and Mclaren set up in the rear. The race off the line is close and heated heading into the first right-hander where contact is fierce and the drivers battle for space. RBR heads into the lead and watches his rearview mirror in horror as the entire field ends up in the grass. A mad dash to the tarmac jumbles the running order which will have a distinct effect on the race strategy and ultimately the finish. The teams all alternate on 9 and 10 lap stints for the entire race. Ferrari, who qualified on the back row was the big winner in the opening corner malay and took over 2nd place which they never gave back. BMW fought back from the first corner incident to take the last podium spot from Lotus while Mclaren and Renault struggled the whole race. Final: RBR (1st) Ferrari (2nd) BMW (3rd) Lotus (4th) Mclaren (5th) and Renault (6th) brought up the rear.

Race Story: The penultimate weekend of this Formula GT ends were it began, in lovely Japan. As the teams prepare for the technical Suzuka Raceway, they find RBR on the front of the grid again. The Blue team has swept each and every qualifying stage and each and every race day as well. This weekend will prove no different. It has been an exciting championship that has spanned the globe and the imagination, spending time in 6 countries, 4 continents and 2 fantasy locales. The drivers have raced almost 3000 miles, used over 100 sets of tires and over 4000 units of fuel. With the championship already won prior to the teams taking the track, the final race was nothing more than an extended victory lap(s) for the Red Bull Racing team. The team spent over 10 hours of solid testing and over 20 hours of actual racing to secure this title and to bring this data to you. To the author it means that GT4 has finally been completed to a glorious 100%. To the author’s family it means that several chores may actually get done now. Have fun with these facts and setups. They may not always be the best and they only brought less than 100 a-spec points each, but they did bring home a championship and they made the car a fun drive. Race Final: RBR (1st) BMW (2nd) Renault (3rd) Mclaren (4th) Lotus (5th) and Ferrari (6th) brought up the rear.

Championship Final: RBR – 150pts (1st) Renault – 53pts (2nd) BMW – 51pts (3rd) Mclaren – 51pts (4th) Ferrari – 49pts (5th) and Lotus – 37pts (6th) brought up the rear.

Nicely executed: entertaining and informative with good data and suitable amounts of fictional licence to hook the reader in.
Good job! 👍

Congrats on the 100% too. Enjoy your Black F1! :D

Predictably, Lotus came last. But what do you expect, they're usually 4-6 seconds per lap off the pace anyway. :sly:

NICELY Done!!! 👍👍 Both the Races & the Report...O.G.

Very nice write-up FishforRent:tup:

Lots of good information for others wishing to give this a try.

It makes me want to go back and run it again!

And Congratulations on the 100%

Respectfully,

Thank you'all for the kind words. I started keeping my laptop next to my racing rig so I could track times and setups (all things that GT4 disappoints me in not doing effectively) so the natural progression was to editorialize.

I will probably try another story or another series, from a different angle. 💡

Thanks again. :)
