lap time challenge

Well, many of you have received the invitations, and a few participated in the first round and a few more have expressed interest in the second round, but I'm thinking of taking this public. Didn't do that in the first place because I don't really expect these kinds of threads to go anywhere, but oh well, here goes...

GT2 race series, lap time challenges. I personally would like to know what times are possible. I have the feeling I'm too happy with my current level of performance, so I'd love to hear what you guys can do, and I hope you feel the same way!

I'll post the challenges here, feel free to reply to the thread or PM me your results, and I'll edit the results back into this first post.

Rules:

Take one or more cars from the list for a spin doing test laps/time trial. On the honor system, in order to keep it fair and not a huge time commitment going for a perfect time, after doing some trial laps to get your settings down, you then get 10 laps to go seriously for a best lap time, in either test lap/sim or time trial/arcade mode.

When you submit your result, feel free to include the details of how you tuned your car and I'll include them in the results. Things like suspension and transmission settings for example, but also whether you drive AT/MT and what kind of controller if you want.

You can take these cars to GT-Pacific Laguna Seca in sim mode and they'll be competitive for the win if you want a race to earn your money back after running the test laps.

Note: some of you may be curious how a '93 Supra is an 80's car. Well, this is actually an '87 MA70 Supra, a model which didn't change through its production run, which ended in '93. The Twinturbo-R and RX-7 GT-X '90 you'll see in the 80's events, and the Infini III is from the same model year as the GT-X '90, both are 5th series FC3S RX-7's available beginning in '89, so it's included. The NSX '90 first appeared in production livery in Feb '89 but wasn't released to the public until '90, but still therefore relies on 80's technology and should be considered an 80's car.

How would one get the Mustang up to 333 hp, anyways? Must be one of the permanent mods? I didn't try those, but I did try the computer, exhausts, and first NA stage.

You know, for the first test there I was sloppy and just said to tune to a theoretical hp that would make things competitive and didn't go into tuning each car to see if it was possible. Thus my screwup with the SLK 230 when I tried it and discovered that at the first state I recommended (say 300hp) there's a big dead zone in possible hp, between turbo1+all other mods at like 280hp and turbo2 at like 320hp, so I had to go back and say to give it stage 2 weight reduction and tune to 280hp. These are exaggerations from memory, but you get the point.

So for the second trial, before posting cars, I tried to mod each of them close to the target hp, and then listed the mods used to get there The Stingray is 3.8hp under what I wanted, and the Infini III is 0.8 over, but most are just 1-2hp under now, pretty fair.

I confess I usually shy away from hot lap comps involving mods and tuning. I hosted many challenges in Project Gotham and Forza featuring only pure production stock cars. No mods and tunes allowed. I was interested in showcasing the car, not someone's ability to build and tune.

Since jeff was kind enough to invite me to the second event, I gave this a whirl. I bought the '82 Vette and threw all the junk at it allowed. The stuff to bring it to 395hp and then all the other crap like semi-race suspension and such. I didn't have enough racing done in Simulation mode to run the GT Pacific event, so I took the car to Laguna Seca on the Arcade side. My best was 1:24.763 on lap 9. I use the Dualshock with A/T. I use manual with a wheel but have enough issues with the DS as it is, so A/T is the way.

The car has a bit of understeer built that wasn't there stock. If I was good with a wrench, I'd try to dial it out a bit but I hate farting with that stuff so my time stands as is.

Probably won't participate in any more unless the car is stock. My only goal when I bought GT2 was to do what was necessary to unlock the tracks in Arcade mode, both directions where applicable, and earn enough money to buy every American car with racing super softs as the only mod. That way every now and then I can buzz around any track exclusive to GT2 with the American iron of my choice.

This event's a little special. These are high power cars, and you will be going very fast. 10 laps isn't enough time to get comfortable with the course. So, you'll have a pace/practice car to try out the course with first. Get a '98 RX-7 RS, add turbo-3 and all of the above mods, and run it at Tahiti until you get under 1:00 on a lap (took me 13 laps..) Keep running it if you want to get more practice in. After you're comfortable, continue as usual.

Supercars at Tahiti, who can catch the GT40?!

What a day! 26 cars crowded the track and fought for position under the Caribbean sun, and at the checkered flag, 3 of them had beat the GT40. The race for 1st was as close as can be, with just a tenth of a second between skynyrd's winning Atlantique 400GT and MazdaPrice's challenging R390 Road Car '98, both yearning to break the 57 second mark but just missing it. 7 competitors did get into the 57's, including cars from the jeffgoddin and Kingofweasels teams and 4 cars total from team skynyrd. The R390 won the manufacturer's trophy with 3 cars in the top ten, and the trusty old GT40 placed second in those rankings also with 3 cars in the top ten.

Rules applied:
1) Tune to 491hp at 2647lbs, and adjust accordingly for different weights,
2) Add super soft slicks, pro suspension, brake upgrades, stage 3 weight reduction and race mod if available, and all powertrain upgrades, and
3) Run 10 laps at Tahiti Road (either test laps in sim or time trial in arcade) and report your best single lap time.

Oh this one's gonna be fun even if I lose horribly (again), I love these cars and this track! The super soft tires should prevent a lot of frustration, too.

Hmm...After trying out a couple of these cars last night, I realize that for all of the time I've spent playing GT2 I never really got down to tuning cars in the same way I did in GT3-4. I have to give props to jeff for choosing the cars available for this competition; All of them (in my ham-hands at least!) are within 1 second of each other lap-time wise.

Yeah, tuning's tough. I refer to Scaff's guides when I want to get serious. I've been running these from heaviest to lightest after the RX-7 I used for practice, and when I got to the R33 LM and the RUF Turbo R I realized how nice the M12 handled without much work, since both of these other cars felt understeery in comparison.

As far as identifying cars which will be competitive against each other goes, I found that simply getting them set up so that they all have the same weight to power ratio will favor heavier cars over lighter cars. So basically I give a bonus to lighter cars of 1/4 of the difference between the heavy car's hp and what the lighter car's hp would be using constant weight-to-power.

Example: 3000lb car with 600hp vs 2000lb car with 400hp, both 5lb/hp, but not fair in most cases, the heavy car will push better at higher speeds and will have a much faster top speed. I give the 2000lb car 450hp instead (=400hp+1/4 of 600hp-400hp) and it will be more fair. More or less. The lighter car still won't push as well or have the top speed, but it will accelerate better at lower speeds due to better weight to power ratio, in addition to handling better as you would expect from a lighter car.

This thread should be stickied, or merged with the already stickied-yet-defunct GT2 Race Series, methinks.

Hey, we've got eight teams competing this week! Nice to see the turnout! This was a tough course, and no tuning to help get these cars under control meant a steep learning curve. FR's were tail happy, but FF's had weak acceleration and the usual understeer.

The clear winner in this battle was the MGF, an often overlooked MR roadster which, when given the chance, can tear up some serious tarmac!

I doubt I can pull off something like that again...

Anyway, the Cerbera was the biggest surprise for me, I didn't expect it to do that well at all; I'm used to TVRs sliding all over the place when you try to take a turn at anything above 30. The biggest pain, though, was the Corvette. I had to fight that car every step of the way!

So close with the R390! If that car had a customisable suspension, I could have hit the 56s no problem. Still, that 57.1 and 2nd place is nothing to be sniffed at.

That 57.6xx with the GT40 was the only lap I broke 58, so yeah, 57.1 is pretty darn fast, way beyond my comfort level. I'm not used to Tahiti this fast, and even after going through all the cars, I'm still far from being able to pull off really great laps, there's always at least one corner I kind of miss.

Oops, in Event 4 above, make that the 323ti Compact, not 328...

This is a very quick event to run, since no time is needed for tuning and laps are about 1:10, so each trial so far has been only about 12 minutes.

Have run (in order) the Micra/March superturbo, '85 Trueno, Elan S2, Cougar, 323ci Coupe, MX-5 '93, and Neon R/T, and have made under 1:10 with three of them, the MX-5 the fastest so far.

And for the Trueno, can you say DORIFFFUTO!!! and make it stretch about 1:10.6? If so that would be an accurate description of my run!

This is starting to look a lot like the German Touring Car Masters (two teams and a couple privateers...)

We've got a new individual champion! Welcome and congratulations to Madmax86, who pulled in the single best lap of 1:01.868 at Red Rock with his Altezza LM!

Once again, Xenn comes up with a mouthful of dust as he misses victory lane this time by just 0.021 second!!! Boy I bet he's dying for that glass of champaigne!

In the team event, MadMax86 sponsored cars clearly outclassed their jeffgoddin driven counterparts on average, with only a few exceptions: the Skyline R30 Silhoutte, the Viper GT STP, the ZZII, the 3000GT LM '99, and by a slim margin the RX-7 LM all gave victories to the jeffgoddin team.

Let's compare their different philosophies:

jeffgoddin's generic tuning: springs stock or 10-20% softer, rideheight front min, rear 15mm above min, bound 5/6 or 4/6, rebound 6/7 or 5/7, camber 2.0/1.0, grearing always custom, DF front max, rear maybe 10 points less than max, LSD initial stock, acc a few points down, rear a few points down, and for 4WD rear 5 point below front

MadMax86's generic tuning: spings 20/20, rideheight front max, rear min (admitted reverse of intended front min, rear max, somebody's getting fired over that oversight!), bound 5/8 or 4/7ish, rebound 1/1, camber 1.8 or 1.9 front, 1.7 to 1.5 rear, stabilizers 7/1 or 7/2, gears auto set near 16 with final at 2.500 (and perhaps tinkering after that), LSD initial high 21-25ish, acc 20-30, and dec a few points above 30.

And in the manufacturer's standings Nissan's old beast of glory the Skyline R30 Silhoutte just edges out Toyota's Altezza LM, with the Dodge Concept Car LM, Nissan R390 LM Race Car '98, and Saleen SR Widebody rounding out the top 5 (go USA!) 4WD contenders finished resoundingly at the back of the pack, though it seems the Zexel R33 is a step ahead of the Kure R33 when it was rumored that they were actually clones, interesting...

4th in the last one... but I should probably be Dq'ed due to a slight misunderstanding... I got totally confused and thought I was supposed to run two laps at a time up to a maximum of twelve (or six stints)! Oops oops oops oops... wish I would have found the thread sooner!

Hey, no worries, we're casual here, it's a 10+ year old game FCOL. Feel free to try 10 straight laps and submit again, many of my best times are on my 10th lap, when I'm finally, finally, finally, serious and concentrating fully after 9 laps of practice.

Not too thrilled about having to win cars to race, but I guess I shouldn't complain; at least I won't be required to run an endurance race several times to get an eligible car...

This should be a fun event in any case.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank our host for presenting these challenges. I know I'm not competitive and only try one car and never bother with turning the wrenches to make the cars better, but it's so much fun taking 20 minutes a week away from more modern games to go down the retro path with GT2. This game still holds its own.

GT2 Quickstart Guide

Several people have asked for help with this, so I thought I'd repost it here. So, if you're short on cash, lost your save, or are just getting started, this is for you! The most surefire, fool-proof road to easy money!

Spend your first five days getting licenses, B, A, I-C, I-B, and I-A.

Now buy a Prelude 2.2 VTEC, for under 6,000Cr (I think), leaving 4,000. Add weight reduction for 1200, racing flywheel for 1000, and ROM for 1500, leaving 300. Race the first Sunday Cup Tahiti event to win another 3000 and buy Sport Suspension for 3200, leaving 100.

Now run the 1st FF event at Tahiti and win it twice, should be easy, and you'll have another 24,000Cr to spend after you sell the Accords you get as prize cars. Get sport tires, muff-3, weight reduction 2, and clutch-3.

Take the Prelude to 80's-5 Tahiti and even with sloppy driving a win should be easy. The secret to Tahiti is that the grass is as good as the tarmac for driving, but the AI doesn't know this, so you can take better lines than the AI throughout the whole course. Even with machines fairly matched off the line you always win by a very comfortable margin here. And the Prelude is faster off the line than the competition, so...

You can sell the Skyline for 125,000Cr and get a 10,000Cr prize. If you're happy with 45,000Cr per lap, repeat Tahiti until you have as many credits as you want, or:

Take the Skyline Silhouette you win at 80's Tahiti over to the Grand Touring Car cup 3rd event at Midfield and win the Unisia Jecs Skyline, it should be a piece of cake, just remember to swap on the super soft tires before the race.

The Jecs sells for 250,000 credits, plus 30,000 prize = 280,000 credits for 3 laps, or just under 100,000 per lap of easy racing (you win by almost half a lap with decent racing, plenty of margin to cover up for several spinouts...)

If this gets boring, you can take the Jecs over to the Gran Turismo All Stars 3rd event at Red Rock, remember again to swap on super soft tires, and run 5 laps to win the Speed 12, which you can sell for 500,000Cr, which plus the 50,000 prize will earn you 110,000Cr per lap. (Hint: If you set the Jecs' rideheight to minimum in front and Downforce to maximum in front you can take almost 2 seconds off your lap time by reducing understeer.) The Skyline Silhouette will also wins here, but requires a little more tuning know-how to get it under control, so try it only if you want to make things interesting!

These (plus the second Touring Car event at Grand Valley) are the big money (per lap) events in GT2.

Aside from doing the license tests, you will have over 1,000,000Cr in well under an hour after starting your game, and if you get the hang of it, another million every 20 minutes after that!

GT2 race series 6th event announcement:

Top Gear trial at Deep Forest! Who can build the better car on a budget?

Special Event! Pick your own car and add what you want up to a limit of 40,000Cr. For used and prize cars, the price is equal to 4 times the resale value you see in your garage.

Special rules:
1) For every full 100Cr under 40,000 you spend, you'll get a deduction of 0.025 seconds off your best lap time. For every part 100Cr over you'll have to add 0.100 seconds to your time, so be careful!
2) Older cars get a bonus deduction for years before 1999 the model is dated to of 0.075 seconds per year.

April 11th opening date, submit results by April 18th

example:
*Supra Twinturbo-R 39,400Cr total for 10,700 base, wr-1 for 1500, hard slicks for 11,000, sport suspension for 3500, turbo-1 for 5000, muff-2 for 3000, fly-3 for 1200, and shaft for 3500
*time: 1:18.607, 1:19.351 base time - 6*0.025=0.150 for being 600Cr under cost and - 8*0.075=0.600 for being 8 years before '99 = 1:19.357-0.750=1:18.607 final time
*raced and won Pure Sport-2 Deep Forest by 1.360 seconds over the Elise 190, yay! Prize + sale of of ZZIII = 20,500Cr, got half my money back already, not bad.

Take one or more cars that you build for a spin doing test laps/time trial. On the honor system, in order to keep it fair and not a huge time commitment going for a perfect time, you get 10 laps to go for a best lap time after settling on your tuning (don't abuse the tuning laps for practice, keep them under 2 laps at a time please.)

When you submit your results, feel free to include the details of how you tuned your car and I'll include them in the race report I send out. Things like suspension and transmission settings for example, but also whether you drive AT/MT and what kind of controller if you want.

PM me your results as you get them, let the battle begin!

PS, if you can't be bothered to keep track of the cost of your vehicle as you build it, or to do the math on bonus deductions for going under cost or having an early model, don't worry, just let me know what you put on it and your raw best lap time and I'll figure it out from there.

What a day at the races! 11 teams entered 66 cars to take a shot at being the best bang for the buck, and at the end of the day, it was so close not even the cameras at the finish could decide the winner!

Patruck GT2's '93 Supra and MadMax86's '88 Silvia K's 1800cc took the checkered flag side by side, both demonstrating a perfect balance between power, handling, and cost. This marks the second win for both teams, making them clear frontrunners for the championship trophy at the end of the season in what is shaping up to be a true dogfight!

Conclusions:

First of all, that deduction figure of 0.025 seconds off per 100Cr below 40,000 you spend was freakishly close to perfect. Any higher, and it wouldn't have made sense to tune the cars at all. Any lower and there wouldn't have been the need to be as considerate in your tuning, just slap on everything you can to get you close to 40,000Cr and that would've given you the fastest tuning.

What comes out of these results then is a clear picture of how to budget tune: Slicks, Sports Suspension, Stage 1 Weight Reduction for heavier cars, and racing flywheel are without question the most valuable parts you can add to your car. Power is only worth it if you can get it for under 200Cr per hp. Brakes, other transmission upgrades, and further weight reduction and suspension upgrades are only appropriate when cost isn't a factor (or in extreme cases.)

Can I enter twice, with different cars? I have Skyline Type MR 280 with stage 1 turbo, sport suspension, intercooler, and tires. I believe, when rounded price, it is equal to 40500. I would also like to enter a Mercuary Cougar, 69'

Yeah, you can enter with as many cars as you like. Note that going 500Cr over will add 0.5 second to your time, though, so decide if that intercooler is worth it!
