Whoever's idea it was to force it on was a bloody moron. It makes the events virtually unbeatable, and is not even accurate to Nascar standards, which do not even allow driving aids. Anyone that got these done before the update that forced them on had a walk in the park. I silvered most of them with the intent of going back and finishing them gold later, and now I can barely achieve silver even because the ASM keeps bogging the car down unnecessarily.
Having to watch the pit sequence that takes a minute every retry is also painful.
Well if this isn't proof, I don't know what is. I remembered I have a second PS3 that is only on update 1.05, so I copied my save over to that PS3. I did the 3 Nascar Driving School Advanced events with Gold 1-2-3, first try on them all, doing nothing differently. This was possible because I was able to set ABS to 0, effectively turning off ASM. They really need to revert this change, as I feel really bad for those that don't have access to a non-updated GT5.
