-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the upcoming 100th celebration at Indy, several of us was thinking it would be a good time to organize a GT5 Indy 500 race using Formula GT's.

Why FGT's? Everyone has to have one to complete the game. This should yield a higher level of entrance over the Ferrari F1's. However if there is enough interest in F1's we could run them in their own race.

---Plan:

We will do qualifying, this will be live qualifying. Racer will get 4 lap race, first lap warm up. 2 and 3 count towards your time. 4th is a warm down lap.

Qualifying will ensure we have matched racers for the race. If we have 32 people entered then top 16 run a 200 lapper and the bottom 16 run another 200 lapper. If more people, we will add more races. So everyone entering will have a chance at racing.

---Rules will be CLEAN RACING RULES:

See the OLR Racing Rules set forth by GTP. https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=111241

---Restrictions:

Formula GT

Hard Racing Tires

900ish PP

---Time and Date:

TBA

---Track and Laps:

Indianapolis Motorspeedway Oval

200 Laps or 500 miles

PRIZES

Top 3 Racers in main race:
Custom Engraved Medal - back side will feature RACERS NAME, EVENT, DATE

Top 3 in additional races will receive prizes:

These are to determined, most likely a gifted Car.

All participants will receive a Gold or Silver Paint Chip!!!

This is a thread to gauge interest. Once we have at least 16 racers committed we will hash out the final details and get a thread started to track racers and qualfying times.

Hope this is something that interests you GTP racers. Long and grueling with plenty of pit strategy to be had.

Please respond here with Name and Time that would work. I see this being about 3 hours long on race day. Roughly an hour worth of testing before race and solid 2hrs of racing.

Thanks for your time hope we can make this happen.

Might do 15 cars per race, this will allow a pace car to pace the start of the race. . .this is not necessary, however would be cool.

Day is still open, figured we could get interest and then do a poll for day and time. Maybe Saturday before the race? I am pretty open myself, so prefer to let the racers pick.

This will be ran in the Month of May.

Im up for this, seems pretty cool and can imagine the cash prize will be pretty sick, especially with 15 others!
but for time, would prefer it to be middle of may, as my exams start end of may, so i wont have as much time

Sounds fun although i'm not sure I'd be able to do a 3rd Indy 500 (Did 2 in one day in a-spec in a FGT to get to level 30) but if you want a pace car for the pace lap then you ccan count on me being there for that. I presume it would be the Nissan

I hosted one of these awhile ago. Only 3 people showed up :(.

If it's a Monday or Tuesday i'm in.

Looks some good interest.

As well there seems to be some of you that have wanted to do this race and had trouble getting racers. Let's hope with you guys and others like us we can atlases get 10 cars on track. Love to have 15-16

As well. This is open to suggestions. In the works and willing to have racers help organize/promote

Plan to do some testing later tonight. Will post a room number if/when.

I'd love to participate. We should run a test race of a few laps sometime soon to try the pace car out.

Fantastic!!!

Just ran a session checking fuel and tire wear.

I might be interested in this.
Going to do some testing for it.

Ristriction is to add more driver control and reserve. Where as the softies kinda way forgiving.

If majority wants to run softs, I am good with that. Seems hards would add to the race.

If the interest is high enough, I would do something like top 16 qualifiers run Div 1 on hards. . . bottom 16 run Div 2 on softs.... Just thoughts, for we are still trying to secure 16 racers. ;)

After some thought, decided this race will reward the Podium finishes with a something more then gifted cars and paint. Which is not a bad thing at all.

However being a one time race, figured I would throw something extra at it. Custom Engraved Medallion...DATE, EVENT, RACERS NAME on back.

This race is for more then pride gents, come race for the GOLD, SILVER, or BRONZE

Guys if this turns out like we hope, I will host a Brickyard 400 this fall. As well give prizes out for that race as well.

Undoubtedly if we do get a turn out and schedule another, I will bidding for prizes from vendors and the like.

sorry "brickyard 400" im lost, is that an american thing lol?

It's the NASCAR event held in August at the Indy Oval. 400 miles rather then Indy cars 500 miles.

If it's the Saturday that is the day before the Indy 500, I might not be able to participate. I have plans to the in Indy to actually attend the race! ;) Maybe the Saturday before that might be possible?

Looking like week before and time seems to be 2pm EST/ 5pm GMT. This is not set in stone by any means. We will do a poll and see where we are.

Indy will be hopping race weekend!!! Hope to get down for qualifying or carb day this year. Live about 90 mile away.

I'm here!! And consider me signed up.

I've had some time to think about this, I'll run my ideas by you and see if any of them would be of interest to the group. Some of these would depend on a pretty large group participating, but we've got enough time to build interest and iron out details so hopefully we'll get that large group.

We should try to replicate as much of the Indy 500 experience as we can. The current Indy Cars are 650hp and 1525 lbs/691kg, we should try to be close to that. I think that might be a little low for power, but maybe we could do 750hp/1500 lbs as the limits.

I also think it would be cool to hold qualifying over 2 days, Pole Day and Bump Day. First, I'd recommend we only do 3 laps for qualifying, we don't need the cool down lap because technically that would happen during the results screen after we cross the line. That would speed things up a bit too. Lap 1 would be warmup lap, then we'd take the average time of laps 2 and 3. The top 10 times would be qualified for the race, and then there'd be a "Fast 5" shootout (instead of the "Fast 9" irl) after everyone's run. The top 5 drivers of the 10 qualifiers would then get one more set of 3 laps and those times would decide the top 5 spots and pole position.

The next day, Sunday, would be Bump Day where all other people that have registered but didn't make the top 10 would shoot it out for the final 5 positions (allowing 1 spot for the pace car). Depending on the amount of participants, everyone could get 2 sets of 3 lap runs.

An idea for tires: On race day, have everybody enter the pits when the tire limit is set to Racing Hard, then have the pace car driver change the limit to Racing Medium's or Softs before he enters the track and starts the race. Then the other compounds would be available on the first pit-stop (needs tested). That's the only way I can think of to force everyone to race on 2 compounds.

Then of course, on the Friday before the race we would have a giant practice/tuning session for Carb Day! I haven't quite figured out how to replicate the bbq'ing and drinking experience of the infield yet, but I'm working on it. 👍 lol

Anyway, sorry for the monster post, Owens and I are buddies (and both live close to the real track) and I've had a couple days to think about all this. Just haven't had a chance to get it all together! These are all just suggestions, and maybe some are too complicated, but we've got time to figure things out.

I'll do it. Keep the cars at full power though. ;) The track record is 238 mph. More fun that way. HARD tires and full power. You slip and slide a tiny bit, and if you make a mistake there's no catching it.

Put HEAVY DAMAGE on as well.

The track record is 239.260mph/37.616 seconds over 1 lap and was set in 1996 by Arie Luyendyk. His 4 lap qualifying average was 236.986 mph. The cars were very different then and I think we should try to match the current format.

Last year's 4 lap average pole time was 226.774 mph, set by Helio Castroneves. The fastest race lap for last year's Indy 500 was set by Will Power at 225.090 mph/39.9840 seconds. I will do some testing today to see what kind of power is needed to match that lap time/speed.

Just to be clear, all the things I posted are just ideas and not set in stone. Just thought I'd put them out there for people to chew on.

I did some testing today and found that 850hp/550kg produces lap times between 40.3 and 40.5. Those seem pretty close to what the real times would be and are fairly close to what my FGT already was. It was already 550kg and I only had to dial the power back a few percent. Both racing hard and racing soft tires produced almost the same exact times but I didn't do any long runs to test degradation.

By having the cars unrestricted they can indeed go faster. However on the hard tires this comes at a price. The faster you push in the turns. The more it wants to slide around. As well the wing angle makes a huge difference in speeds and such.

There could be the consideration of a PP limit. Beings same car. Allow people to meet the PP with full wings and reduced power. Or mix of reduced wing and power. Or little wing more power.

That kinda sounds fun leaving the driver open to favor his set up to power or control.

There also the thought of simplicity. Bring FGT with all the fast stuff. Mount the Hards and go racing. :)

Edit: After some though. I am gonna have to say only restrictions are Hard Racing and a FGT

Reason I am really pushing this is for that fact of what the 500 used to mean to all. It was the best, the fastest, the most money, an the elite of drivers. It was no limits to a point. I kinda don't wanna Tony George this 500. ;)

However the ideas discussed are very good. I would love to get restrictions going on for the Brickyard. It just seems more suited.
