Thursday Night BMW Racing

Introduction

This is the unofficial spinoff of the stillborn BMW M League.

Since there was a lot of initial interest in the series I'd like to keep things going 👍

First of all, this is not a race series. This is a informal racing night for BMW enthusiasts.

  • There will be no points.
  • There will be no qualifying.
  • There will be no reviewing replays to hand out penalties.
  • This is purely for fun!
  • There will be multiple races per night

Car Regulations:

  • Street BMW's Only, no racecars
All of the cars listed at this link are allowed with the following exceptions:

    • 320i Touring Car '03
    • M3 GTR Race Car '01
    • McLaren F1 GTR Race Car '97
    • V12 LMR Race Car '99
  • 500pp limit
  • Tires restricted to Sport Medium
  • No aero parts Edit: Aero parts now OK
  • All other mods OK
  • You do not have to stick to one car for these events. In fact, switching up your cars in strongly encouraged 👍

Race Format and Lobby Regulations:

  • Standard OLR rules will apply. Violators will be kicked from the room.
  • Grip Reduction set to "real"
  • All assists off (except ABS)
  • Race order set to reverse of previous race finish
  • Penalties off
  • Fuel consumption and tire wear on
  • Damage light
  • Mics will be on for practice, but please turn them off for the race

The room will be opened around 5:00pm (17:00)PDT and I will host for 2-3 hours. The room will not be fixed host, so if anyone wants to keep it going longer they are more than welcome to. As mentioned above, there will be multiple races and I was thinking of keeping them around 15-20min in length. This should be long enough to not feel the need to pile into the first turn, and also make tire wear a bit of a consideration.

Although this isn't a true series, there should be an end date so we don't have to watch it slowly fade away as interest dies out as it often does with any race series. I'm thinking about running these until the end of May, so May 26th would be the last event.

The track list is still to be decided also. I would like to limit the number of tracks raced on each night so people can setup their cars and learn the track if needed. Whether it's 1, 2, or more tracks I'm not sure at this point, but I would like to keep them to the more realistic tracks. No Top Gear Test Track, and nothing with jumps

Any other input or suggestions are welcome except the tire and PP settings; these are set in stone and not up for discussion. That should save about 10 pages from this thread

While this "series" isn't going to require formal signups, please post up if you're planning on joining in on the fun and I'll keep a list going in this post.

Hi there.

This is exactly what im looking for. Since I cant commit to a series, because i have other obligations.

But I would be very much interested to join your races now and then, when i have time for it.

Im a somewhat slower driver. But Im clean and fair. and just want to have some races where Im not pushed of the track in the first corner by some random 14 year old.

Only thing I am not sure about the time diference. Im in EU. (CET) Im not 100 % sure But I think 5.00 your time is 14.00 CET ?.

PSN ID. klondike_rush

Would be interested, as well, but 5 (I presume pm) is more like 1am CEST on Friday, so it's probably out of the question...

Have fun guys, sounds good.

Oh how I wish GT5's car list included the BMW Isetta 300. :)

You know I will be there, Egg. This should be great!

P.S. You should update the start time in the OP to 17:00 or 5:00 PM. Currently the OP reads as if you'll open the room at 5:00 AM.

Cool, things are starting to get rolling 👍
Thanks for the input on the start time, I've edited the OP to make it a bit more clear that it is 5:00pm PDT. Unfortunately this would make it 2:00am in Germany (CET). For those in CET, and own an M3 CSL, there is also an M3 CSL Series that would be more suited to your time zone.

OK, I think I've got everyone who's interested on the list. I left klondike off the list since I don't think the time zone thing is going to work out.

Any thoughts for what tracks you guys want to run? I'm leaning towards running 2 track per night for a bit of variety, but still have the ability to prepare both the car and driver for the upcoming races :D

Edit: Added some proposed tracks to the OP for the first event on April 21st, let me know what you think.

I'll come. Weekdays are much better for me. I constantly struggle to make it to weekend races.

I'll likely be there some Thursday's, but I'm working this Thursday night. So you can add me, but don't expect me on the 21st.

I was noticing that the car you have in your picture shows a wing. Rules say no aero parts. Just so we are clear I'm assuming rear wings are aero parts. I also assume that if I have a car with a wing I can easily take it off for the night

PS: Egghead I like your tag line. My wife gets mad at me for playing "kids games". I always reply that I'm racing not playing games and it's not a "kids game"

Hey FastM3, I've added you to the list. Since this is not a series, that's totally cool if you can't make the first official night 👍

Regarding the aero mods, this is mainly a holdout from the BMW M League which I unofficially took over. I really don't think aero is necessary on a 500pp street car, and yes, there is a wing on the picture in the OP as it is a stock component of the M3 GTS. Unfortunately, the game requires you to take trip to GT Auto to remove a wing rather than just being able to uncheck it in your mods list. If there are a lot of you with wings I'm open to changing that rule for this reason. Like I said, this is a carryover from the BMW M League, and something I feel is both unnecessary and takes away from the spirit of a streetcar based event.

May I recommend 10 laps on the following tracks for

SS5 (longer course) 10 laps
Suzuka 10 laps
Grand valley east 10 laps
monza with chicanes 5+ ?

just an idea. What do you guys think?

As far as aero I normally put on the front lip. Are you considering that part of the aero or more the wings on the car?

Thanks

Thanks for the track ideas 👍
I'm not a big fan of SSR5, I think it's partly to do with the fact that you can't see the headlights of the person behind you. Is that glitch still there?

I'm starting to reconsider the aero rule, and just open it up to everything. Edit: Rule changed 👍
I really don't think it's any advantage, I'd rather spend the PP on reducing weight or adding power personally. That way people don't have to spend money adding and removing wings on their existing cars.

Egg, are you considering the Concept 1 Series tii '07 a street car? I figured the question would come up at some point being that it technically is not a "street" car, rather a "concept" car, so why not ask it myself.

M3 CSL allowable? Either way, count me in. (Though I'm more amp'd with it included)

Yes, both of these cars are allowed.

Definitely not going to win anything but I loved this idea under cjs and loved it last Thursday. Count me in!!

You're going down Graham. I was talking to my imaginary friends last night and they all agreed my aero equipped CSL was spectacular. In fact, one invisible friend in particular, Mr. Cuddles, was moved tears. He couldnt believe how amazing it was.

OK kids, it's almost showtime! :gtpflag:

I did some messing around with different cars tonight, but I found the stock CSL and GTR to be the most balanced and rewarding to drive 👍

Would anyone be opposed to knocking back the laps on Daytona Road from 10 to 7? It was just under 2min per lap when I ran my M5 around there once tonight, so that would take the total race time from over 20min to around 15min.

A 120d popped into my UCD tonight as well. Has anyone maxed one of these out? Can it hit 500pp? That would be so cool to beat an M3 with my Diesel

Buy it... the torque on that thing is bonkers! I got the 120i a few days ago, but I am looking for the D. We can make a swap and have both. :D

Oh don't worry, I bought it 👍
I just haven't touched the tuning on it yet. I don't want to do irreversible mods just yet. I've got the 120i as well, 2 actually :D
One is maxed out to 476pp without any aero mods, the other is basically stock.
Since the 120d is about 20pp higher in stock form, assuming I can do the same level of mods it might just about hit 500pp

I haven't gotten any of the 120's but I agree with you on the csl and gtr they are the best handling bimmers in the game in my opinion. Looking forward to tonight
