Slowpoke wins Grand Valley 300

Grand Valley Speedway – May 30, 2005

This race took place in the Spot Races and Lap Time Comparisons On-Line Racing section of GTPlanet.

The first Grand Valley 300 km. featured a field of some of the greatest Gran Turismo endurance racers in the world. The race offered up a healthy field, a surprise pole sitter and a dominating performance by Slowpoke, in the No. 1 Xanavi Nismo Nissan Skyline GT-R.

By the time entries closed before qualifying, the entry list contained 14 cars and drivers, including some of the big names of on-line racing.

The field was comprised of eight Nissans, six Skylines and two Fairlady Zs, five Toyota Supras and one Honda NSX. Most expected the Nissans to dominate, with the Motul Pitwork Z being the favorite to win.

After four days of qualifying, the grid was set and a surprise polesitter stood atop the grid. Small_Fryz in the No. 88 WoodOne Tom’s Toyota Supra set an amazing lap time, qualifying on pole with a 1’36.220, 0.127 seconds ahead of Slowpoke, in the No.1 Xanavi Nismo Nissan Skyline GT-R. The surprise was not so much the driver, but the Toyota he set the time in made people take notice. In fact, four of the top six times were turned in by Toyota drivers. This served notice that Nissan drivers might have a fight on their hands during the 300 kilometers. However, some of the top Nissan drivers were concentrating on their race set-up, unconcerned with setting a quick time.

Unfortunately, not all the cars would take the start, as three drivers were forced to withdraw from the event. As the eight remaining cars lined up on the grid for the 300 kilometers, the emotions and ambitions ran the gamut. Drivers at the front with a chance to win knew they would have to turn quick laps in order to remain in contention. For drivers closer to the back, most in uncompetitive rides, their only chance was to do clean, mistake-free laps and hope that consistency would carry them into contention.

As the lights turned green, the eight cars rocketed away from the grid, with Small_Fryz in the lead, followed by Slowpoke and IforceV8. On lap seven, Biochemist had a moment approaching the second hairpin when he braked with two wheels on the grass. He was able to control the skid and prevented it spinning but lost a few seconds.

At the end of the next lap (8), Small_Fryz pitted from the lead to change his R2/R2 tires. Lap 10 saw Slowpoke (R2/R2), Old Geezer (R2/R3), Mulsanne (R2/R2) and Driven –USA- (R2/R2) in the pits to change tires. Eatsviper4lunch (R2/R1) would pit on lap 11, followed by Biochemist (R1/R1) on lap 12. The final person to make his first stop would be IforceV8, who pitted to change his R1/R1 tires on lap 15.

Slowpoke set the race’s fastest lap on lap 16, turning in a 1’40.485 as Small_Fryz made his second pit stop of the race. On the next lap, Mulsanne ran wide coming out of the first hairpin and brushed the wall. Lap 18 would see Biochemist lose control heading towards the second hairpin. He did a 180 degree spin, but stayed on the tarmac, ending up at the apex of the hairpin facing backwards.

The second round of pit stops intensified on lap 20, when Slowpoke, Old Geezer, Mulsanne and Driven –USA- all pitted. They would be followed two laps later by Eatsviper4lunch. On the same lap, Small_Fryz, who was running second, hit wall just before 1st tunnel, while 4th place Mulsanne ran wide at exit of 2nd hairpin, brushing the wall.

On lap 24, Small_Fryz and Biochemist pitted. Mulsanne hit more trouble, sliding into tire wall before 1st tunnel. Several laps later, he would run wide at the exit of the newly tightened left-right-left on consecutive laps, brushing the wall with the right side of the car.

Lap 30 brought about the next series of pit stops, as Slowpoke, Old Geezer, Mulsanne, IforceV8 and Driven –USA- pitted for new tires.

Standings at lap 30, ½ of the race distance:

1) Slowpoke Xanavi Nismo Nissan Skyline GT-R 52'39.006

7) Biochemist Takata Dome Honda NSX 56'16.873
*) Driven –USA- Castrol Tom’s Toyota Supra no time

As the field crossed the line to complete half-distance, Slowpoke led by 25 seconds over Small_Fryz, who had 14 seconds over Old Geezer in third. Mulsanne carried on in fourth, despite the off-course excursions, while IforceV8 completed the top five.

Eatsviper4lunch pitted next on lap 32, as did Small_Fryz, who had a moment two laps later when he slid off the circuit and lightly touched the wall just before the 2nd hairpin. Biochemist would make another stop on lap 36.

On lap 40, the top four cars pitted, as Slowpoke, Small_Fryz, Old Geezer and Mulsanne came in for tires. Driven –USA- would follow them into the pits on lap 41, while Eatsviper4lunch would pit on lap 42.

Lap 44 would see Eatsviper4lunch miss his braking point for the first hairpin and slide off into the gravel. As he was coming back onto the circuit, he was hit by a backmarker. Thankfully, no damage was done, but he lost approximately 15 seconds in the incident.

As the field began the final quarter of the race, Slowpoke held a lead of one minute over Small_Fryz, with Old Geezer just five seconds back while IforceV8 would make a pit stop from fifth place.

Standings at lap 45, 3/4 of the race distance:

7) Biochemist Takata Dome Honda NSX 1:24'09.840
*) Driven –USA- Castrol Tom’s Toyota Supra no time

On lap 48, Small_Fryz pitted, moving Old Geezer into second place. Meanwhile, on the same lap Biochemist outbraked himself going into the first hairpin and missed the apex, getting two wheels into the gravel. He got going again only to spin exiting the second hairpin, when he got the rear left wheel on the rumble strip, hit the throttle and as he said, the back overtook the front. He would pit to change the worn tires on the next lap.

With just 10 laps to go, Slowpoke, Old Geezer and Mulsanne pitted. This stop would not be kind to Mulsanne who ran wide at the exit of the second hairpin on both his in-lap and out-laps. He would be lucky to continue in fourth place. Small_Fryz, who had just taken back second place ran wide on the exit of turn one, hitting the wall. No damage done except the time lost.

Driven –USA- and Eatsviper4lunch pitted on lap 52, with the au Cerumo Toyota driver changing from R2/R1 to R2/R2 for the remaining eight laps. On the next lap, Small_Fryz ran wide at the final hairpins, nicking the wall. On lap 55, Mulsanne ran wide at exit of the left-right-left for the third time.

With just four laps to go, Small_Fryz pitted and changed tire compounds, moving from R2’s to R3’s. And in what seems to be a running theme, Mulsanne ran wide at exit of the left-right-left, brushing the wall.

Slowpoke completed the final lap and took the checkered flag 1m33s ahead of Old Geezer. Small_Fryz, the top Toyota driver, would complete the podium, only ten seconds out of second place. Mulsanne finished fourth, with IforceV8 in fifth. Eatsviper4lunch finished in the sixth position, with Driven –USA- in seventh and Biochemist, the lone Honda finishing eighth.

The 300 kilometers featured plenty of incidents, good racing and a dominant performance by Slowpoke and his Xanavi Nismo Nissan Skyline GT-R. A big thank you to everyone who took part in this race.

WOW!!! Fantastic write-up! Even though I was there it seems so much more interesting thru your eyes! 👍 Sign me up for the next one! ...O.G. :D

Very good job Mulsanne 👍 It would be so fun to have like a 15+ field next time we run this, but 15 from qualifications to the actual race all the way ;) At the second there is a doubt they could not make it and complete the whole event people should not signup. Saves time for everyone and most of all to the race organizer.

Congrats to the podium finishers! Anytime, any car, any track, next time I'm in at 110%.

I really like this write up and even more, this whole event! :)

Is it possible for me to enter an event like this in the future or are there certain 'rules' which you have to follow? :)
