Here is my second narrative for the Formula GT World Championship. I did the whole thing in A-spec again. I ran it using a DF (not pro) wheel and a completely stock F1 car except I changed the toe to -2 from -6 to get better tire wear and added 100 kgs ballast to see if it would make for better competition. It boosted the A-spec points to 115. But the competition, although better, was still pretty weak. I left the results sections from my first write-up as a comparison. The best lap is the best indicator of what the 100kg meant in performance.

Tokyo 60 laps:
Started out OK, missing most of the 1st turn traffic and had a slim lead at the end of 1 lap. I pitted at ten laps on very orangey-red tires, and the car starting to handle badly. 9 would be better but it would leave an odd number of laps at the end. 13 seconds back as I reentered the race. The extra 100 kgs seems to make the front tires wear faster and add about 3-4 seconds a lap. The pack pitted at 11 laps (and then alternated with 11 or 12 laps). The 2nd place car at 12 laps consistently. I was barely in the lead after the 2nd stop at lap 20. I lapped the back markers on lap 39 but couldn’t hold them off on red tires. On my final lap I lapped the leader who was in the pits one lap before his end -- bad AI pit strategy…
Results (100kg ballast):
Winning Margin: 1 lap
Total time: just over 1 hour 23 minutes
Best lap: 1:15.954 - Average 1:23.000
Observations: Tires wear quicker and in a different pattern than with no ballast. Better to have the fronts go first anyway.

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 2.75 laps
Total time: just over 1 hour 19 minutes
Best lap: 1:13.659 - Average 1:19.000

Twin Ring Motegi Super Speedway 127 laps:
I got to 1st on the 4th lap but couldn’t hold it without a slipstream. Then I spun it on lap 9 (wheel in the infield grass) and went back to 3rd a few seconds back. The whole pack pitted at 13 but I could go 18 before I had to brake to make the tight turn, even though 3 of the four tires were bright red. Lapped the pack in the pits on lap 14, but came out of my 18th lap pit in 3rd less than a second behind. Since I had 2 stops fewer, it wasn’t much competition after that.
Results (100kg ballast):
Winning Margin: 3 laps
Total time: Just under 1 hr 2 minutes.
Best lap 26:033 with a draft. Low to middle 27s with out a draft. - Average 29.291

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 8 laps
Total time: Just under 59 minutes.
Best lap 25:794 with a draft. Low to middle 26s with out a draft. - Average 27.874

New York 74 laps:
Tire wear was about the same as with no ballast, and, for the first time, the rears went red before the fronts. Made 10 laps but 9 laps is best, so 2 10s and the 9s the rest of the way. The pack didn’t pit until lap 11 or 12 so I was in 3rd 10 seconds back till then. Kept the lead after the 20 lap stop, though, so I was home free,. Didn’t catch the last place car until lap 27, then it took till lap 38 to lap the field, only to give it back when I pitted.
Results (100kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: 1.3 laps
Total time: just over 1 hour 40 minutes
Best lap: 1:16.013 – Average 1:21.081
Observations: One advantage of the extra 100kgs is when the AI cars hit you they bounce off while you motor on unaffected

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 2.5 laps
Total time: just over 1 hour 38 minutes
Best lap: 1:14.640 – Average 1:19.459

High Speed Ring 77 laps:
I was in 1st place by the first turn and up by 19 seconds at the first pt stop. Not enough to keep the lead, of course. With 77 laps 11 seemed a good pit strategy. Had two red front tires but it still handled OK. The AI is terrible on the first turn, braking for the little kink at the end. The whole pack pitted on lap 12, so I wasn’t far off. Lapped the pack on the 36th lap. Spent less time messing with the leader this time, which resulted in a lower overall time.
Results (100kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: 2 laps
Total time: just over 1 hour 15 minutes
Best lap: 52.498 with a good draft, about one second more without a draft – Average 58.441

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 5 laps
Total time: just under 1 hour 22 minutes
Best lap: 50.236 with a good draft, about one second more without a draft – Average 1:03.896

Grand Valley 62 laps:
Started pulling away from the pack right away and had a 18 second lead after 4 laps, only to catch a wheel in the grass on lap 5 and give back almost half of it…. I was hoping to get 6 laps before my first pit stop but I was able to stretch it to 7 the first two stops to save a stop.. The pack caught me and I wound up in 6th until they pitted on lap 8. Couldn’t lap the field until lap 57.
Results (100 kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: 1.5 laps
Total time: just under 1 hour 40 minutes
Best lap 1:29.155 – Average 1:36.774

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 2.25 laps
Total time: just over 1 hour 38 minutes
Best lap 1:26.544 – Average 1:34.838

Five down and 10 to go. So far the competition has been better than without ballast but still weak. Standings so far are: 50, 21, 18, 17, 13, 11. The AI trading off 2nd places nicely.

Sarthe 1 23 laps:
The pack pitted on the 4th lap and I was still on yellows! I was hoping to make 5 laps because of the extra weight, but I made it to 6 on bright orange as I did with no ballast. Looks like a 6,6,6,5 is it again. The pack will do 4,4,4,4,4,3 giving me 2 stops in hand! Closest race yet, as expected. I basically won by one pit stop, not good driving.
Results (100 kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: 43 seconds
Total time: just over 1 hour 17 minutes
Best lap 3:09.105 – Average 3:20.870

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 2:25 minutes
Total time: just over 1 hour 15 minutes
Best lap 3:06.635 – Average 3:15.652

Cote d'Azur 78 laps:
Caught the pole sitter 2nd time through the Loews hairpin and never looked back. I’ve always used an 8 lap pit strategy in GT3 but could only make 7 here, as was the case without ballast. Rears were red and fronts barely orange! Did 8 the first stop to save an extra stop, but it was pretty nasty the last half lap. Pack made it to 9 laps, so I am down a stop. I didn’t lap the field until after my last stop at 71 laps, mainly because I was fooling around with the 1st place points car. Something I like to do to pass the time…
Results (100 kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: 1.5 laps
Total time: just over 1 hour 49 minutes
Best lap 1:17.056 – Average 1:23.846

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 4 laps
Total time: just over 1 hour 45 minutes (actual time: 1:45:41.568 – Winning time in the real 2005 GP of Monaco was 1:45:15.556 pretty darn close)
Best lap 1:15.204 – Average 1:21.538

Seoul 113 laps:
I wound up getting 16 laps for a 7 stop strategy. More than that didn’t pay, as I was almost out of gas anyway. Didn’t keep the lead as I did with no ballast, though. Pack lasted until 19, 20 or 21 the widest spread of AI strategies yet. But I lapped the leader on lap 51 so, much later than without ballast…
Results (100 kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: 3 laps
Total time: just over 1 hour 29 minutes
Best lap 43.315 – Average 47.257

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 4.25 laps (would have been 5 at least if I didn’t fool around)
Total time: just over 1 hour 28 minutes
Best lap 43.104 – Average 46.726

Infineon 76 laps:
Lots of places to get in trouble here. Took until the 4th lap before I had a clean lap and I was 15 seconds behind by then. Tires were used up on lap 8 but looks like 9,9,9,9.8,8,8,8,8 is best, 8 stops to their 7. I finally got the lead on lap 21 when the pack pitted the 2nd time. I gain about 5-6 seconds in the pit each time. All 5 going in at once must slow things down… Kept the lead after the 3rd stop, making up the extra pit stop.
Results (100 kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: 1 lap
Total time: just over 1 hour 40 minutes
Best lap 1:11.680 – Average 1:18.947

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 2 laps
Total time: just over 1 hour 38 minutes
Best lap 1:10.442 – Average 1:17.368 (more fooling around with 2nd place)

Laguna Seca 85 laps:
I stay out 10 laps, one too many as I had an interesting time in the cork-screw. Decided to do a 10,10,10,10,9,9,9,9,9 anyway to even out the laps. I was over 35 seconds ahead by the first stop so I stayed in 1st easily. The whole pack pitted at 11 laps. I lapped the pack at the end of lap 15. All of the AI go wide right on the corner past the cork-screw and do a nice 360 across the track into the gravel on the left every 3-4 laps. You’d think they would learn…
Results (100 kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: 4.5 laps
Total time: just under 1 hour 46 minutes
Best lap 1:08.571 – Average 1:14.834

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 6.5 laps
Total time: just under 1 hour 44 minutes
Best lap 1:06.449 – Average 1:12.706

Ten down and five to go. At this point I could already stop and win the championship being ahead 100, 38, 36, 35, 31, 20 over my opponents.

Twin Ring Motegi Road Course 64 laps
I thought that this was not a fair comparison between the two series on this track as when I did it without ballast I didn’t know the track well and didn’t start getting good times until lap 20-30. This time I was reasonably fast straight away. However I was much slower this time anyway. Made 8 laps on red rear tires and lost the lead going into the pits. The pack stopped at lap 9 so they should have the same number of stops, assuming they are dumb enough to pit on lap 63 (they are, in fact). I was behind after the second pit stop, but only in 2nd a couple seconds back.
Results (100 kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: 1 minute 28 seconds
Total time: just over 1 hour 42 minutes
Best lap 1:28.966 – Average 1:35.625

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 1.75 laps
Total time: just under 1 hour 41 minutes
Best lap 1:27.396 – Average 1:33.750

Nurburgring 15 laps:
After a disastrous 1st three laps I was 44 seconds behind. I’d pitted on lap one to avoid the pit congestion, though. Not sure that was a good idea as I had to fight them on the track instead. Hard to pass without putting a tire in the grass, which means a spin much of the time.
Results (100 kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: 46 Seconds The pack was starting the long straight when I finished
Total time: just over 1 hour 30 minutes
Best lap 5:37.673 – Average 6:00.000

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 2:55 minutes The pack was in Kesselchen when I finished, about ½ lap back.
Total time: just under 1 hour 28 minutes
Best lap 5:29.943 – Average 5:52.000

El Capitan 64 laps
Hoped to make 8 laps but at 7 I was bright orangey-red. Decided not to try 8 because it looks like the extra weight causes just enough extra wear. (I was barely able to make 8 without ballast). Lost the lead, of course, but the pack pitted at 8, so it could have been worse. Could have lapped the field but I tried to stretch the last stop to 8 and that lap took almost 35 seconds more than the average. Moral… Don’t let the tires get RED,
Results (100 kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: 1 minute 3 Seconds.
Total time: just under 1 hour 35 minutes
Best lap 1:19.641 – Average 1:29.063

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: 2 laps.
Total time: just under 1 hour 29 minutes
Best lap 1:17.745 – Average 1:22.345

Fuji 2005 67 laps
Made it to 9 laps on red rears and all but one of the pack also pitted at 9. Looks like a 9,9,9,8,8,8,8,8 is the best. Wound up in 3rd after the second stop as the leaders went 10 laps.
Results (100 kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: just over 1 minute 16 seconds.
Total time: just over 1 hour 38 minutes
Best lap 1:22.099 – Average 1:27.761

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: just under 2 laps.
Total time: just under 1 hour 37 minutes
Best lap 1:19.970 – Average 1:25.970

Suzuka 53 laps:
Last race! I like this track even though there are endless places to get in trouble. Not doing so well at the start. I pitted at and the pack just motored on by. Pack stopped at lap 8 and I regained the lead by 9 seconds. At least we’ll have the same number of stops. Couldn’t go 8 on, as I did without ballast so it will be a 7,7,7,7,7,6,6,6. Had a 15 second lead after the 2nd round of pit stops and started gaining 1-2 seconds a lap. All I have to do is stay on the track! Took until lap 23 before I kept the lead for good. Actually faster with ballast. Why? Probably because I got the Gold license here between series. So I knew the track much better.
Results (100 kgs ballast):
Winning Margin: just under 1 minute 15 seconds.
Total time: just over 1 hour 31 minutes
Best lap 1:35.464 – Average 1:43.019

Results (no ballast):
Winning Margin: just under 25 seconds.
Total time: just over 1 hour 32 minutes
Best lap 1:33.556 – Average 1:44.151 (obviously a lot of gravel time)!

Well it’s done again, nearly 21 hours of racing. I won 150, 55, 55, 52, 51, 27. A bit more competition but 150kgs or even 200kgs might be even better. But I got 1725 A-spec points and a cool 4.5M credits. Gives me 9.3M credits at 39% done on day 667; almost time to buy some black cars!.

KOOL bigjoe...VERY Well done! 👍
Really good to see the comparisons between "Ballasted" & Non-Ballasted!" Looks like 200kgs still wouldn't slow you down enough to find REALLY close races! :indiff: ...O.G. :D

Hi BigJoe!

Good writeup! 👍

I just started F1 challenge finished 3 so far. I haven't seen your writeup but I started with 200kg ballast by myself. It's really good to see your writing though. Helps a lot.

I changed the balance of the ballast to -12 (front), so the noise doesn't break out that wild and so suddenly, but it gives the car less ability to turn. It turns in wider angels. Anyway I'm getting 161 A-Spec points per race.

I will try to write raceriports as well. :)

Best wishes!
