I would love to see people compare there laptimes with stock brake balance and with their modified brake balance.

My bet is the difference would not be large.

I primarily use brake balance to tame a car that gets wild under braking. I may tweak to help turn in in FWD/AWD cars. No idea if it makes any difference in my lap times, but I know the car will be more stable for me.

And I totally get that aspect of BB tuning. That can lead to more consistency and thus less mistakes which will help your race results.

I just feel like some people feel it will help them pick up several seconds of speed and I would love to have some actual data. I love data:)

Not very scientific data, but for the Rocket/Brands Hatch combo I practiced a lot and got pretty consistent times. A few people suggested that I change my BB and that it would make a huge difference. I did and it didn't make a significant difference to me. In fact, times were ever so slightly slower, and I felt like I had to spent way more effort somehow. Same thing happened with the Lotus/Fuji combo, although times were just slightly faster, but that could be because I wasn't nearly as consistent as I was with the Rocket, and with added laps of practice I was able to shave off a tiny amount of time.

So, I always drive with 5/5 BB. The 2 times I changed the BB it made no significant difference.

I probably gained all of about .4 changing the Integra BB from 5/5 to 4/7. But, its not like that .4 was impossible to get with 5/5, just easier to get with 4/7 if that makes any sense.

I only change BB early on in my practicing if I don't like the feel of the car under braking. I play around with it for maybe 15 minutes at the most, then leave it for the rest of the time we run the car. So I would tune it for feel, then let it be and continue to work on line and reference points.

No worries, we are a tough skinned lot that enjoy bickering. Not very much offends us here.

I was not offended and was not trying to offend. I was just curious if there was any data to show what sort of time bb adjustment makes for people.
 
I think focusing on getting braking points, entry speed and throttle control would be time better spent. I remember one time when @JazzNine came in to a practice lap when I was running laps at Monza. He saw my time. Laughed and then set a time 10 seconds quicker on his first lap. He then walked me through his lap showing me braking points, what gear to be in and the like. I picked up 6 seconds on my next lap. This was helpful.
This! I think the difference in lap times between the divisions lie in the "WHERE" (where should I put the car,where should I brake,where should I apex) rather than car control.

If it's not clear what you have to do on a given corner shape...you can't go fast.
What you can do is ask more question, do and watch Time attack or your friends license tests.
 
It really depends on the car. Most of them I don't mess with the brakes but there have been a few in recent history that provided more than just a few 10ths advantage. The following changes were good for 1-2 seconds per lap...

The GTR at GP/F rotated much better with 5/10.

The Lotus Elise didn't spin out as much with 5/0.

The Dino was a little less twitchy with 5/3.
 
I just liked how this car handled before I put the slicks on it. It went from being a fun car to thrash around to a beast with ADHD. I'm here to have fun, clean racing with people the same approximate speed. So if there are ways to put some of the fun back into the car I/e adjust the BB. It's worth a try.
 
I'm sitting here eating summer sausage, cheese and crackers for dinner. I've been watching this BB discussion off and on all day and thought I might chime in, a bit more, on the whole thing.

When I first joined SNAIL, about 19 months ago, (good grief! where did that time go) I was quietly but adamantly against brake balance adjustments. The 5/5 seemed to be balanced, equal pressure to all 4 calipers. This went on for almost a year. This stance changed when, after almost a year of running that way, I was practicing with Owensracing and a couple other players I'd met in other series I'd been in, don't recall if we were practicing for SNAIL Sunday combos or the Stamina Series or some other series I may have been running at the time. At any rate, I was having trouble hitting the apexes with a car and Owens and the others convinced me to change my brake balance to help me get the car to steer, while I was braking. I gained a full second after the change and each lap where I was able to hit the apexes reliably, I got faster and faster. I even adjusted the brake balance further, thinking, hell, if that simple of an adjustment made that much difference, more would make a bigger difference. Since I've heard the saying "go big or stay at home" used in these kinds of circumstances, I did. It didn't work out so well. So, I backed up the BB adjustments until I found that sweet spot that allowed me to control the car while braking and put it where I wanted it to go. It was an epiphany for me. A simple adjustment would make a catastrophically loose car controllable and take a car that was an annoyingly pushy bi:censored:h, and make it as polite and civil as the Queen Mother herself.

I don't care that it might not be true to the spirit of "Spec" racing. It helps keep me on the track and heading in the right direction. It doesn't matter that you, and I, should be changing where and how we brake, it only matters that you can control the car when you do. Without being able to steer, no matter your braking situation, you have no control. Being able to control a car while braking, especially of you've just brain faded and completely missed your braking point, and are about the smash the car in front of you, is the only chance you have of avoiding it. If you can't drive it into the wall or the grass or go sand surfing, you will smash something, other than yourself. It's not about gaining time, it's about maintaining control. Without control you won't gain anything. We had a saying in my previous career in electrical construction, where our battles in a lot of cases involved getting overweight vehicles, like bucket trucks and digger trucks, through some mucky areas, so we could use them to do our job. That saying was this "Stab it and steer it." As a younger man I took this to always mean, hammer that go fast pedal and keep working that wheel. As I got older I came to realize, it didn't matter which pedal you were "stabbing", but the steering part never changed.

I'm not sure where I heard it, but I heard an understeering (pushy) car is a safe car. Slow, but safe. An oversteering (loose) car is fast, but dangerous. I don't like either. I want my car to go where I tell it go, when I tell it to go there. Brake balance adjustments help me do that. As long as they are "allowed" I will continue to use this setting to make a car behave in a way that is conducive to my driving style. If I like how the car drives with a 5/5 balance, I'll leave it alone, otherwise, it's getting changed. I tend to brake early, but use less pedal and keep the brakes on past my turn in point, but, when I'm into a heavy brake zone, I still want to be able to turn my car, while slowing down. As my division placement shows, it ain't the fastest way, but it's how I do it. Since I have no intention of taking the motorsport world by storm, that's how I intend to go on doing it. It works for me.

I was in SNAIL for a couple months in GT5 last summer, but unfortunately I've been busy with work since then. However, I have this Sunday free, and possibly a couple more in the near future. I'd love to see how I stack up against you all in GT6.

If I could get the instructions for how to rejoin, that would be great.

(Also, random question: Is it true that breaking in cars is not needed in GT6? Cause that was a huge pain in GT5.)

We would love to have you in the league. Here's what you need to know and do in order to join:

We run a clean league by enforcing a strict penalty system based on the S.N.A.I.L. OLR (which is a modified version of the GTP OLR). We also expect all of our drivers to know and follow The Good Racecraft Guide.
Please become versed in both if you aren't already. Once that is complete, please follow the steps below to complete your entry into the league:

1. You take the S.N.A.I.L. OLR and Racecraft Test

2. You run the Time Trial and submit your information by 23:59 EST on Saturday night if you want to race this Sunday.

3. @JLBowler PM's you with your assigned Division that we feel will give you the closest competition. You will be added to the drivers list.

4. The Race Director or Primary Host from the corresponding SNAIL Division will send you a PSN friend request. Sunday night you will need to sort the online lobbies by friends and join the lobby named 'snailracing.org Division_(x) based off your Division placement from JLBowler. That lobby will be where you race Sunday.

5. You drive fast and clean on Sunday 👍

Man! I had some catching up to do on post reading:crazy:

I just wanted to make a comment regarding the posts made about practice last night and practice night in general. I used to host practice night but stopped, honestly, not because I couldn't, it was because it was getting more chaotic than I liked so I pretty much started practicing on my own or with a few people.

Reading those posts kind of hurts me. I remember when practice wasn't a Sunday night race but a chance to race with better racers and they would give you pointers, race with you, let you race in front of them while giving you pointers, let you race behind them and watch their line, talk with you, wait up for you if you go off or spin and then continue. I'm not saying that everyone should do that but it would be nice if some did. I just want to say to the faster drivers, us slower people respect how fast you are. And I'm not just talking about D1, I'm taking about ALL faster drivers, take some time out, in practice and give someone that might be struggling some pointers. I'm not being bias because he is a friend but we can all learn a lesson from AJKVail. He's not the fastest racer but he is faster then others and he takes the time to race with someone who asks or if he sees someone struggling. I know a lot of you now what I'm talking about. I sure learned from that.

Look, I know practice night is to practice for the real race on Sunday. I know. I just think that we shouldn't not take practice so seriously and have FUN. I'm sure that there are plenty of slower Snails that would love some pointers from the faster racers, on track. Remember, Snails help each other get better. That's what its all about. Let's not let it come to were there is a Blue Room, Red Room and a Fun Room on Thursday nights. I would love to see a Blue Fun Room and a Red Fun room. Posts saying ''Hey thanks for the tips Fred" or "I had an awesome night racing with Steve, he showed me some great braking points". We are a large family and we should be helping each other get better.

One last thing, have FUN FUN FUN Don't take it so seriously.
