Here's one of those small world scenario's. I was just reading a flying article about freight dogs (cargo pilots) and they were talking about flying up the Owens valley to Mammoth Mountain and how the winds and turbulence up there are some of the worst in North America. They mentioned this old WW2 airbase!

It must be a sign!! You should make the trip down and run the event!

EPA SEEKS TO PROHIBIT CONVERSION OF VEHICLES INTO RACECARS
-- SEMA to Oppose Action as Threat to Modified Racecars and Parts Suppliers --

Washington, DC (February 8, 2016)– The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a regulation to prohibit conversion of vehicles originally designed for on-road use into racecars. The regulation would also make the sale of certain products for use on such vehicles illegal. The proposed regulation was contained within a non-related proposed regulation entitled “Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Fuel Efficiency Standards for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Engines and Vehicles—Phase 2.”

The regulation would impact all vehicle types, including the sports cars, sedans and hatch-backs commonly converted strictly for use at the track. While the Clean Air Act prohibits certain modifications to motor vehicles, it is clear that vehicles built or modified for racing, and not used on the streets, are not the “motor vehicles” that Congress intended to regulate.

“This proposed regulation represents overreaching by the agency, runs contrary to the law and defies decades of racing activity where EPA has acknowledged and allowed conversion of vehicles,” said SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting. “Congress did not intend the original Clean Air Act to extend to vehicles modified for racing and has re-enforced that intent on more than one occasion.”

SEMA submitted comments in opposition to the regulation and met with the EPA to confirm the agency’s intentions. The EPA indicated that the regulation would prohibit conversion of vehicles into racecars and make the sale of certain emissions-related parts for use on converted vehicles illegal. Working with other affected organizations, including those representing legions of professional and hobbyist racers and fans, SEMA will continue to oppose the regulation through the administrative process and will seek congressional support and judicial intervention as necessary.

The EPA has indicated it expects to publish final regulations by July 2016.

There has been some discussion on the ChumpCar forum as to the real specifics of this proposal, but regardless, this could have a huge impact on auto racing as we know it.

And being that there is so much backlash there is no way it will happen in the ideal way the EPA wants it to. There will have to be compromise.

It is amazing how far the EPA and the federal government try to reach into our lives. Sign the petition guys!!

Some of you guys may need to take some chill pills! :)

First a bit of mild hysteria about a 20 year old racing clip and then some more about what seems to be a potentially premature conclusion by SEMA.

Fair enough. So if the EPA is ONLY attempting to clarify language in already existing laws it begs the questions... Why? I think a little common sense can answer that... because they're not getting the results they expected/intended to see. There's no need to screw with things that are working, unless they're not working in your favor.

"According to this statement, it's already against the law to perform any modifications to a vehicle that result in the tampering or removal of emissions control systems, even for competition. In other words, if you have removed a catalytic converter from your racecar, you're already afoul of the rules. Conversely, if your vehicle is old enough that it didn't come with emissions control equipment in the first place, you're seemingly free and clear."

I think most of us that are racing cars not in stock / factory classes are in violation of this one. Its really going to hurt rally racing. The cars have to be registered which means smoging in most states. The cars are required to run Cats but they are obviously changed to ultra high flow race cats.

The spec miata guys aren't gonna like that... Oh wait, all of SCCA ain't gonna like that...

I think it might only hurt racing IF sanctioning bodies themselves could be held accountable. I'm not sure if they can be. I'm not a lawyer. Driver/owners sure, but if the blood isn't on the bodies' hands they're not going to care what mods people make as long as they fall inline with the specs they DO care about.

A low powered FWD car. Sounds like what most of us drive daily but in the virtual world we can throw it around all willy nilly!

Michigan has always been relaxed on vehicle emissions. Cats. are the 1st to go on modified vehicles. No emission tests and police officers are very tolerant to noise. My Jeep sounds amazing, my favorite sound of spring is firing it up. Signed the petition of course.

So my PS3, like others out there, has gotten very loud. I know why, there's little to no thermal paste left. This was a big issue until today. I had found a tech repair place nearby and finally went in today to ask about prices info. It will cost $80 and take 2-3 days. Yelp reviews claim their time estimates are on the high side and it's usually done sooner. I plan to bring it in Tuesday and hopefully have it back for Thursday practice. I didn't want to bring it in just yet because I want to race this Sunday. GadgetRX. Check em out

It seems Nissan is scaling back their racing programs significantly. Maybe their just not getting back what they thought they would. I mean jeez... their road cars are awful to look at IMO. The only ones that invoke any sense of excitement are the most impractical options. If the new Prius didn't look like it got smacked in the nose with a 500lb fly swatter I'd say the Nissan van is the ugliest thing on the road, but that's just me.

I still love me a mid 90's 300 though.. :)

I may not be able to race this Sunday which is a bummer, this week's combo's really suit my driving style. The sweet little wifey asked if we are doing something "romantic" this Sunday for Valentines Day. I suggested how about watching me race.... The look I got made me reconsider.... I would really really like to be able to race again.........
