Spent the last 2 hours playing with K'Nex coming up with a light-weight but rigid structure I could fasten to a wall.

Starting to think it might not even be worth the effort and money. The wall studs are spaced out pretty far and the connections between the connectors and rods are showing slouch even with just two cars put on it.

I could always just grab pre-cut hobby poplar at home Depot, and just throw them up on the wall. It'll last forever but it's ugly.

Acrylic's nicer, but it's expensive.

Foam's cheap, but I'd have to continually recut new sheets if the collection expands past the limit.

edit: Getty Promo Miata if you needed one, Jason.

And yes, you got it. I'll post it tomorrow (:
Cool beans. Thanks. 👍
It's not bad. I just like the color.
Oh yeah, it is a great colour. Just thought I'd post this pic again in case you didn't see it before when all the talk about the TLV GT-R's was happening. Looks much better than the red imo.

Yeah, honestly don't think you can go wrong with either of them. Both look great. 👍 The blue & white one is clearly the better of the two though...
This is why I love you, you diplomatic Spaceboat! but there's the fine print. lol
One question: Is that the infamous Drag Bus up there covered in dust? Because if it is, that totally has to the first car you feature.👍

I totally agree. This is the most epic elite catch, ever, Uber-ace-goat! 👍
Yes it is the Drag Bus. As I've said before, that remains the only Drag Bus I have in my collection... well, if you don't count the Garage versions with windows. And yes, you got it. I'll post it tomorrow (:
This is so exciting. It sure does feel like an anticipation right before the new Indiana Jones, or Star Wars movie. Except this one won't have Shia LaBeouf, or JarJar Binks in it.

I'm almost finished writing the stuff that I need to post, then I'll proceed with the cleaning and all that. Drag Bus incoming.

As for... well, cars, Mattel Mexico has launched a national sale campaign for Hot Wheels cars, They're about 75 US cents right now, and Wal Mart has jampacked the bins with 2015 B-Case cars, so it really is worth to go looking for them. Picked up 21 cars today. Can't remember the last time I did that.

Daaaaamn, ninjaaaa !!! I think I like JLs over GLs overall. That wasn't based off that one post alone.

Went back to Walamrt again, couldn't find that second F150 for you. Sorry. Shall we sort out shipment at this time?

2004 Lamborghini Minicar Collection. Don't buy any from this pack if you want slide out cards.
These were made with blisters glued to the card... like a Hot Wheels

It's a Diablo GTR. It's sick.

I'd have got all 3 if I just bidded a little higher on the yellow and white.

Hmm, got anything else you are getting rid of? Hate to spend on Canada to US shipping for a single car.

I have beef on those side mirrors, as they look similar to the ones seen in Hot Wheels or Matchbox models. But on the flipside, at least they won't come off. My white Countach LP5000S belongs to the same set as that Diablo, and I bought that from my Japan trip. The packaging is a bit off, though... glued to the card. No wonder the succeeding models have sliding cards.

It's "I have beef", not "I have a beef". 👍

Hah so you really did forget about the CM's Nissans and M2 Road Runner.

I love them all. Johnny Lightning, IMO, was much more fun & unique compared to its competitors.

Well it's only fitting that Cano should start off with that car. I think it holds a special place in all our hearts really. Dat JL Beetle by the way. :embarrassed:

I'll have something for you tomorrow. It's getting late now.

=======

So I think I'm fairly against the idea of buying a bunch of Greenlight display cases after doing a measurement of the wall and finding out that a 1-meter horizontal space can only house 9 cars. What a poor density level. Bad real estate. I'm looking for the density equivalent to downtown residence.

So now I'm quite taken by the fact I can order parts off K'Nex's website, so there is at least one supplier I can keep returning to. Their prices are probably pretty crappy because I just nabbed all the stuff one eBay seller had for considerably low prices.

So now it's come down to figuring out a structural pattern that will hold. The one setup I have currently probably won't last me. While a structure won't collapse, I don't like seeing a structure sag due to a load. What I order probably won't be enough, but I'm working on something. Here are two patterns I tried out.

YwdU1DW.jpg

This is the earliest sketch model. Here I was trying out different patterns where I could conserve on connectors in the front. I wanted to avoid adding too many pieces in the foreground so as to avoid detracting presentation of the cars themselves. If I didn't want the extra frontal support, I'm going to need strong braces underneath each riser. I can of course just assemble them 4 inches apart, but that too detracts from the minimalistic presentation I wanted to go for.

Inlk5Ej.jpg

Here I went as light on material as possible. K'Nex doesn't exactly come off as heavy objects, but when you start bulking up on pieces and adding extra structural support, it can be heavy, especially for drywall holding up screws. It too is lacking presentation.

To summarize, I'm aiming for an open-space wall shelf. No elements should give the impression of closure; no side walls, and no vertical support beams in the foreground. I want it to look modern, but I don't want it to look like scaffolding. I'll snap a pic of what's sitting on my wall tomorrow.

Baka please. You should already know I've had glass-encased display shelves cases before.

Here's what is on the wall for the time being. The support braces aren't spaced far enough to hold any boxed goods. It's also dipping the the middle. Again, this is just draft and early tests. I'm using the two stud-mounted screws I used to hang up the 12-pound frames from before.

Once I get my bulk order in, I'll be playing around with other structural patterns. If someone can make a setup that can support the weight of 32" LCD TV, I'm certain I can make something that can hold a few miniature cars on a wall.

Carney displays are a bit costly, but completely worth it. They last forever, and everything is dust-free. I love my three and am buying a fourth once we move...

They don't ship outside the country though sadly enough. I'd have jumped on that cost-effective option otherwise.

edit: Looks like they do, but I've lost respect for this guy with his poor writing:

Ansy,
I get a lot of orders from Canada, I am not shure what is happening.

I ended up running into so many neat, or great deals last night, I ended up buying bunch of cars(one of them said "Lamley Deal"?) One notable was yet another Chevy Panel, but it's a little different. I didn't care for it(mine's still carded), but it was $23 shipped, so I checked around on eBay first? Look at what is in place of the chopper bike. :D:tup:

As they say, Legend-ary. *slow nod*

I like the super long exhaust! Chrysler kicks ass though.

Shure makes good headphones, Ansy.
I'm perfectly ok with these.
For me, it's a tie. White doesn't look as bling as the other case, but you paid lot less. I also find the mirror finish on the other one a bit much. I don't mean to sound critical, both cases are really nice.

Glad you are using the Lamley Deals. There are some great listings there. And yes, Shure makes awesome headphones. I have a pair myself. And Andy, sorry for his poor typing, but they are great folks over there. I called them and they walked through the cases I wanted, and made them perfectly. I am not a fan of the mirrored backgrounds, that is why I went with white. They were not that much more:

BTW, skipped the TLV shopping spree today and gave another Japanese brand a lot of my money. Had a lot of fun at the Montbell store in Boulder, Colorado. Awesome stuff. a6m5 I figured you would be happy with that.

 I'm not insulted or anything, and I'm sure he's a good person considering that they were willing to make accommodations. The reason for turning down their offer now is because I keep forgetting that the flexibility of continually building on a K'Nex frame is a dominating feature over pre-made display cases. When wall shelves like what you have gets full, you have to buy a new one.

If what I build reaches its maximum capacity, I just add new sections and it stays a single display shelf the entire time!

Modularity. :D

Have I heard of it before?

Weak yen thanks you.
Well said. 👍

Thanks. Should I be buying more from Karuwaza right now if the yen's weak?

I know. But it also gives me a reason to visit the Pearl St. Mall. I haven't been in quite awhile.
