DEARBORN, Mich., May 2 - The most powerful factory-built Mustang ever just got even more potent. Final certification testing of the Shelby GT500’s 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 shows it will produce 500 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft. of torque – 25 more horsepower than preliminary estimates.

“With 500 hp and the Shelby name, this car is an instant legend," said Hau Thai-Tang, director, Advanced Product Creation & SVT programs. "This is the most powerful, most capable Mustang ever."

The Ford Shelby GT500's supercharged 5.4-liter, 32-valve V-8 is a result of Ford's experience in developing the modular V-8 and V-10 engine series. The engine is force-fed air via a "Roots-type" supercharger providing 9 pounds per square inch of boost. It borrows the four-valve cylinder heads, piston rings and bearings, from the Ford GT engine.

The 500 hp rating was obtained using the Society of Automotive Engineer's latest standard and was witnessed by an objective third party. The Shelby GT500's 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 will be built at Ford's Romeo Engine Plant in Romeo, Mich. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

The right to purchase the first 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 was auctioned for $600,000, with the proceeds benefiting the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation. The 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 goes on sale this summer.

So the engine is pretty much the Ford GT engine with slightly less power.

Wow, finally a newer Mustang worth owning other then the Cobra R.

Depending on the final pricing, this could be an amazing deal. 👍

Nice drawings and all but could you please put them in thumbnails as they are really big and cause major sidescrolling.

Yeah I know thats a problem... dunno how....
I only put them here cuz no ones replied on the 'car drawings' thread

Rouge, this is spam. I know you're new to this and you want to share your talent with everyone, but your drawings are WAY off topic, and don't belong here.

Rogue,

1) There was no reason to post such huge pictures in this thread. If you're using image shack, then you see the line that says "Thumbnails for forums" use it.

2) What did they have to do with the thread topic? Nothing. So whether or not another thread is getting replies is no reason to take this thread way out to left field.

I wouldn't say this has much to do with the Ford GT at all.

The engine is Iron block, only the heads are really like the Ford GT.

I'd say this is a Stang heads thing, hopefully the GT-H means a GT-350 will hit soon.

Onikaze

Not worth it imo.

The GT500 will already be a nice bargain of a 500 horsepower car, and the GT-Hertz was just to commemorate those 1,000 GT350 Hertz.

Poverty
  1. It will have the live rear axle "to save costs" (very stupid considering you can now get a 7 year old SVT Cobra with IRS)
  2. It is based on a less "sporty" car anyways, without as much concern put towards things like weight distrubution
  3. The stock Mustang GT weighs more than the Corvette convertible. There's no way that this car (which will be festooned in typical Ford fashion) will weigh less than the Z06, because the 5.4 is even heavier than the 4.6 in NA spec.
[*]It is still, at it's core, a stock mustang with a big engine in it. The Z06 was a more-or-less entirely rethought car.

...Ford thinks that it will draw people away from the Corvette Z51, not the Z06, that is a little too high for Ford to shoot with a live rear axle. The car will be undoubtedly quick, right around 4 seconds 0-60 with a top speed north of 160MPH... But that really isnt any quicker than a Corvette Z51, which will probably be cheaper to begin with.

If the rumors are true, Ford is thinking about doing a GT500KR (King of the Road) eddition of the GT500 for 2008, presumably to inch just a bit closer to the Z06... But with the Camaro due out around the same time, they have a different Chevrolet to worry about...

I love the new Camaro so much more than the Mustang honestly. It looks like the high school bully, and has such a mean ass look to it.

If and when the Camaro is produced, I will definately be putting down a deposit for one when possible.

Well, since the 330 will be gone around Dec. 2007, that should give me plenty of time to look at a new Camaro.:sly:

Base V-6 Stang, $17-19k
Mustang GT, $22-25k
GT-500, $40-45k

That leaves a big gap to put another car in.

Make a GT-350 with an IRS, keep it NA 4.6, but make it spin up to say, 7k rpm, about 350 Hp, slap two stripes on the hood and a smattering of badges, along with tightened up suspension bits.

Stick a $30k sticker on it and call it out the door.

Ford isnt going to go about thowing an IRS underneath the current Mustang any time... The car has proven itself to be quite capable with the regular-grade live axle, and Ford has said over, and over, and over again that it will cost too much to go IRS.

GT350 Strasse? Within the realm of possibility I suppose, but I think that "blank" spot is going to be left for the upcomming "special eddition" Mustangs like this years California Cruiser... Don't worry, they still have to build BOSS, Mach 1, and Bullitt eddition Mustangs... Those will probably recieve the upgrades from the GT350H, and maybe get a few extra things as well.

If you really want a special Mustang before the Cobra comes out, Chip Foose is selling specially customized Mustangs through select Ford dealers across the country. I have no idea what the price is, but I would expect it to be in the high $30K to low $40K range

I understand that the IRS will cost more money but if Ford wants the Mustang to be well-accepted everywhere in the world then they will need to scrap the Live Rear Axle someday, preferably in the next Mustang. Lots of cheap compacts have independent suspensions all around for the price of a Mustang GT, such as Cobalt, Civic and tC.

Ford won't do it because there are so many people who hate IRS suspensions for drag racing, and a good part of the Mustang fanbase only buys them to drag race.

They have kept a pretty good balance with the system they have now... It handels good enough to entertain the IRS people (as if the Cobra wassent enough...), and the LRA does a good enough job for the drag racing people as well... Its all about balance...
