Are you kidding?
Powered by the new, naturally aspirated AMG V8-engine, which develops a maximum output of 514 bhp and a maximum torque of 465 lb-ft from a displacement of 6.3 liters, the E 63 AMG is the most powerful E-Class of all time. Available as a Saloon or Estate, this top-of-the-line E-Class model occupies the leading position in its segment, where no other vehicle has more output, torque and displacement.

The E 63 AMG also benefits from all the model enhancements which make the new-generation E-Class stand out, for example the occupant protection system PRE-SAFE, the new Intelligent Light System or the new adaptive brake lights. Developed completely independently by AMG, this 6-3-liter V8-engine is the world’s only power unit to combine the high-revving concept with a large displacement – the result is around 20 percent more torque than from comparable engines in this output class. In line with Mercedes-AMG tradition, the new powerpack is hand-built in the AMG engine workshops on the "one man, one engine" principle. Thus equipped, the E 63 AMG Saloon accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds (Estate: 4.6 s). The top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

Transmission, Sport Suspension, and Braking System

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7-speed automatic transmission is the perfect partner to the naturally aspirated AMG 6.3-litre V8-engine: equipped with three individual shift programs, it enables the driver to choose between more comfort-oriented or extra-sporty gear changes – either in automatic mode or manually, using the new AMG aluminum shift paddles on the steering wheel. Outstanding handling safety is guaranteed by the AMG high-performance braking system with internally ventilated, perforated disc brakes all-round. The particularly highly stressed front brakes feature innovative composite technology.

The AMG sports suspension based on the semi-active air suspension system AIRMATIC DC includes the Adaptive Damping System ADS II and allows the driver to choose between more comfortable or very sporty handling characteristics. The shock absorbers and springs instantly adapt to the current driving situation, but can also be manually modified in three stages at the touch of a button. The 8.5 and 9.0-inch wide, titanium grey, high-sheen 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a new five-spoke design are fitted with wide-base tires in size 245/40 and 265/35.

The new AMG wheels are not the only distinguishing feature of the E 63 AMG. A lasting impression is also created by the new, heavily contoured AMG front apron, large air dams and round foglamps with chrome surrounds. Heat from the integral, additional engine oil cooler integrated into the front bumper is able to dissipate via air vents in the sides. This top-of-the-line E-Class model is also immediately identifiable by the "6.3 AMG" lettering on the front wings. Dynamic side skirts, tinted rear light clusters in a new design and a redesigned AMG rear apron for the Saloon impressively round off the visual impact. Both visually and acoustically, the AMG sports exhaust system with its two twin chrome tailpipes underlines the dynamic character of the E 63 AMG.

Interior

These striking and exclusive features are continued in the interior: a sporty touch is provided by the AMG sports seats with nappa leather upholstery and alcantara inserts in the shoulder area, as well as the AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel with a perforated leather lining and AMG aluminum shift paddles. Perfect workmanship and a carefully coordinated color scheme ensure an atmosphere of the highest quality.

The driver is kept well informed by the new AMG instrument cluster with attractive dial instruments, a speedometer graduated to 320 km/h and red needles. The integral AMG main menu display shows the currently selected gear including an upshift prompt, as well as either the engine oil temperature or the battery voltage and the RACETIMER. This new function enables the driver to measure lap times on an enclosed track. The RACETIMER records the time for the fastest lap, the average and maximum speeds and the lap distance.

That looks mean. Loving the wheels.

Interior could have been better. MB fans are vexxed though. They wanted 600hp to really show up the M5. M5 will probably still be faster round a track though, but this car is amazing. Germans are moving the bar ahead yet again.

VERY nice indeed! I have high hopes for this new engine as the other unit done so well.

Interior is too dark, but that's the Germans for you. The lighter ones have always been better for me.

It has ABC suspension too. Mercedes is the KING yet again.

Americans are complaining though that this has 50lb ft less torque than the E55 though.

I don't really like that new front grill, but that's not AMG's fault, and I like the old double spoke wheels more as well.

From a performance standpoint the new engine is better than the old supercharged 5.5, but I liked that low revving torque monster of a thing better than this 6.3. And I'm not American at all.

Oh god...

Let those fatheads drop the difference. Problem solved.

Poor AMG -- they keep on trying to catch the BMW Ms, but BMW's cars are simply better drivers' cars than M-B's cars to begin with...and there's only so much AMG can do. :indiff:

I'm not too crazy about the exterior, but I really like that interior, except for the buttons on the wheel...

Looks great but....it looks just like a E55 AMG save for the grille, wheels and some difference in the headlights. What about its fuel consumption?

The new 6.3 is 50kg lighter than the 5.5 engine and gives quite a bit better fuel economy over the old 5.5 aswell. Dont know the exact figures.

Wolfe I think AMG's main obstacle is that the MB are too heavy for them to beat bmw. I think if they make a stripped out SL63 that weighs about the same as the M6 MB would come out on top. MB has been getting cars that weigh over 2100kg/4620 lbs doing some ridicolous times over at the ring. It seems as if these new AMG's are rewritting the laws of physics.

For everyday use MB cars kill every BMW M and Audi RS model.

I love how the Germans are building exactly the same things we were building back in 1969, musclecars.

Quite frankly, I love it. I've always been an E55 "fanboy" I suppose, and this only solidifies those foundings. Not to say that the M5 or S6 wont be great (I prefer the S6 over the silly M5), the E63 does a better job of being civilized on the street, and a monster on the track.

If I can recall for a moment, the CLS55 (based uppon the E-Class) placed second behind the M5 during Car and Driver's testing of the two plus the STS-V at my local racetrack, Grattan Raceway. I can't recall what the exact difference was (I don't remember where I put that magazine), but it was pretty marginal. Of course, the track layout does allow for some equalizing of cars that are built to handle well and cars with obsurd ammounts of power. The front straight, if I can recall from my racing days at Grattan, is just shy of a mile long, but the rest of the track is somewhat technical, with rolling corners to test the regidity of the car along with it's suspension. I suppose thats why GM and Ford both use Grattan for tesing, along with Mallett performance, and it is also a cornerstone of the SCCA racing season.

...Back to the point at hand: Don't write off the E63 just because it is a Benz. I would not be surprised to see the car come close, if not beat the M5.

STS-V's close with CLS55? Thats good. American cars all the way!

I agree with the M-B being too heavy, they're just like the Muscle Car days, but all more high-tech. Someone please criticize those Germans for over-the-top fuel consumption please, not just American V8s.

On Grattan's 2.0 Mile course, these were the lap times:

- BMW M5: 1:31.25 @ 78.9 MPH
- Mercedes-Benz CLS55: 1:32.55 @ 77.8 MPH
- Dodge Charger SRT-8 (not part of test): 1:32.65
- Cadillac STS-V: 1:33.55 @ 77.0 MPH

Keep in mind that the Bimmer is the all-out racer, the STS-V is the cruiser/bahn-burner, and the CLS55 is the medium between the two. C/D brought in the Charger SRT-8 just for fun, as they added it just to see what $40K USD can get you...

I'd have said that the CLS55 was an Autobahn Racer too. I just can't see it being chucked around a circuit.

 I've found my new favorite AMG car. I'd love to have this and an E55 in my garage. One for going to the grocery store quickly, and the other for getting their faster. :D

Wow...that makes my life even better. STS-V keeping up with a M5 within 2 seconds? Thats awesome! Im impressed by Cadillac even more.

The Charger SRT-8 is the real winner here though; as fast as a CLS55 but without the eye-popping price tag. What a car! What a deal!

2 secs is alot on a 2 mile course.

Dodge time is a great achievement. It is sitting on the old e-class chassis though.

It was still a second behind the cls and thats the best autobahn burner of the lot. And the AMG is mercedes equivelant to BMW's M.

the cls is just a coupe version of the e-class. It is in the middle I suppose but its also the most comfortable car.

If its equipped with ABC technology it will be sporty but at the same time have class leading ride quality. ABC is a reason alone to start buying mercedes again.

EDIT: The front straight at Grattan is "only" 3200 ft in length...

Complaints about the CLS55 were that it felt slow, and thus acted that way. It didn't like the quick transitions the track give, and the transmission was reluctant to do anything in some situations. Grip was there, back, and there again (.93g), but the steering was too heavy to give that feeling.

The STS-V was mostly praised for it's cheap price, which allowed to to pass the CLS55 for 2nd place. But the problems were mostly with the excessive up-and-down motions of the suspension (even when in competition mode), and excessive break dive. But with the cheaper price and overall comparable performance, it won over a few hearts.

Of the M5, it would seem that the complaints have been the same at every magazine: Too stiff of a ride, poor shift quality SMG transmission, and the GD iDrive... Other than that, perfect for a track day or a sportlich drive down the road.
