2012 VW Beetle

I think the part that interests me the most is that it's basically a Beetle GTI with the 2.0T and similar drivetrain.

Dunno, it still screams "girl's car!" to me :indiff:

Never been a fan of the Bettle, though. Not the original, not the New Beetle and the upcoming Beetle is no exception to this. That might be because my mother loves these cars so much, as does my aunt and a few other women in my family... There's just no chance whatsoever that I'd ever consider a Beetle as manly, unless it's one of the originals and modified to hell and back again :sly:

New Beetle doesnt look bad at all... I quite like it... The old New Beetle was a joke IMO... This looks a bit more serious to me... Nice job! 👍

Well, the New "New Beetle"

The New Beetle was always a "nice-to-see-but-never-want-to-have" - Car!
It's a good revival, but I think that this car is just unneccesary.

Why would you pay more as for a normal Mk6 Golf, and have less space?
Would always choose the Golf instead of this thing.

Although, it's a good revival and looks a little bit better than the First New Beetle.

I think it looks nice. Looks more sporty than the original New Beetle. Like the offspring of a Porsche and a New Beetle.

Is that the interior, because it reminds me of an 8 year olds plastic playhouse. Those vents look god awful spanning the dash like that. :yuck:

NO THE PICTURE IS NOT THE BEETLES INTERIOR! That the interior is from the Beetle Dune Concept.

It actually looks good. yes, even in brown. I like it and I would own one, especially the 2.9T or R model.. especially if the latter has AWD.

What do you mean by this? Are you talking about the distance horizontally between the wheel and windshield? Because the previous generation's front wheel was under the windshield...

I should have clarified: steering wheel. In the old car you sat miles back from the windscreen and visibility was terrible, in the new one that doesn't appear to be the case.

Edit: And I don't know why people are still getting hung up on the rear-engined thing. Lest we not forget the original Beetle was actually pretty crap, it just happened to serve a purpose. Handling by most accounts was between terrible and non-existant, it had a great habit of pumping exhaust fumes into the cabin and you needed to roll down the windows a little to shut the doors without your ears popping. And luggage space was pretty dire too even by standards of cars of the day.

Don't get me wrong, I like the old Beetle, but let's not kid ourselves - the new one is much better off as a standard front engined, front driver...

Next up in VW's retro-design product portfolio after the 21st Century Beetle, the 21st Century Microbus! The 21st Century Microbus will be retro, as I told you earlier, and retain the overall shape of the original Volkswagen Type 2 (the Microbus's original name before the famed VW Van got a nickname).

The roof is a little too flat in the roofline for my liking... I liked the original more.... this one doesn't really look like what I think a Bug should look like! Maybe it'll grow on me?

I actually quite like the new 'New' Beetle. The roofline is more like the original Beetles than the previous New Beetle. I wonder if there'll be a GTi model ...

Well, it is supposed to have exactly same engine lineup as the Golf, starting from the 1.4TSi and all the way up to the 270bhp 2.0 turbo from the R20..

I think in the US they're calling it the "Sport" or the "2.0 TSI," nothing too special. It gets all of the running gear from underneath the Jetta GLI, which should make it a solid performer (both vehicles share the same basic architecture, which is different from the MKVI Golf).

Sounds daft, but one of the ones I'm looking forward to most is the Bluemotion version. Firstly because it's probably going to be closest in spirit to the original Beetle, and secondly because it'll make a lot of sense in the UK where it'll almost certainly get free road tax, congestion charge exemptions, and of course good fuel economy to mitigate the effects of £1.40 per litre fuel...

looks llike a trickled down Audi TT, way better than the old one!!! buy one in orange paint with these LED lights, im sure nobody's gonna miss you down the road!

This car doesn't deserve to be called Beetle without New. Infact, i'd rather say that the New Beetle should be called Beetle and this fat Audi TT a New Beetle

I'm not sure if this is what you meant, but just to clarify:

The Mk6 Jetta has a beam axle in the rear, while the GLI version of the Jetta gets independent rear suspension just like the GTI. The Beetle is going the same route. The regular trim levels, and the TDI get the regular beam axle, and the Turbo version with the 2.0T is basically a re-shelled GTI complete with IRS.

Personally I think it looks sweet, and the interior looks great as well. Given the choice between my GTI and this, I would have chosen the Beetle. Sadly, I need the larger hatch space the GTI offers in order to drive my dog around. On looks alone though, the Beetle kills it.

I think it works well as a stand-alone design. It has very vaguely the same shape as a Porsche 911 but quite different proportions, and the large wheelarches are unique to the Beetle.

The more I see pictures of the new Beetle the more I like it. In profile it's pretty much perfect, especially with that little kick of a spoiler on the sport model. Pity by the time it hits the UK that I'll not remotely be in a position to buy one, as I think it's overtaken the MINI (which I'm bored with) and Fiat 500 (which is quickly starting to look very contrived) in terms of retro-modern vehicles.

I'm interested to see what colour options it arrives with. I can see the design working very well with some proper '70s shades like lime green and orange. The brown a few pages back works surprisingly well, and I reckon off-white and powder blue would look good too. Stylistically the new Beetle is more similar to the 1970s 1303s than it is to smoother and simpler 60s or 50s Beetles.

GTI for hatch practicality(and potentially 4 doors), and Beetle for styling....I'd bet you'll pay a premium for the Beetle though....I doubt you can have the Turbo for 24k....which is where GTI starts...

I think its hideous, same as its predecessor. The only thing I can see that has improved is the bonnet length, it may grow on me though.

It should drive a lot better now, I'll bet its based on the new 'rocco. Most new VW's drive the same anyway.

Do I see a little Reims in above photo? :D

You do. Only the Beetle isn't actually there, unlike the cars you posted... :P

If you'd had a little read of the info (and everyone else's comments) you'd have already seen it's based on the Golf platform ;) So you're right by proxy, since the Scirocco is also a Golf, as is the Audi TT and umpteen other VAG products.

So yes, it should drive okay, since the Golf, Scirocco, TT et al are supposed to be quite tidy handlers. It'll be interesting to see how heavy the Beetle is. To my knowledge, the TT is the lightest car on the platform as it uses a lot of aluminium rather than solely steel like the rest of them.

i'm not a beatle fan but this 2012 version looks pretty good...maybe there trying to style like porsche in the the future?

Scirocco is technically less related. Its a modified Golf platform from MKV, but with Passat rear suspension....

Jetta MK6 and Golf MK6 are probably closely related(aside from the US non-GLI model)....and the Beetle is probably riding on something similar...

I can't remember where I was reading but I'm sure I noticed somewhere that Volkswagen were planning on using a multi-link rear for the sportier Beetles and a torsion-bar rear for the more basic ones to reduce costs. So they're probably pinching bits from all sorts of other VAG products depending on the spec.
