Mostly, its the all-wheel-drive, and the fuel economy savings on the V6 with said layout.
But, Dodge is offering all-wheel-drive now on the Charger. It also seems like the adoption rate on the Explorer has been a little better as well.
At least around here, good lord, no one seems to be able to make up their mind. The Michigan State Police seem to be jumping entirely to Chargers and Explorers, while still maintaining their Tahoes as well. Kent County has been scattershot, at best... They've got the new livery on the PPVs, but have the old one on Tahoes, and have a weird "ghost" job on some Chargers as well. The Grand Rapids police are set to switch entirely to Explorers by 2016, while Kentwood seem to be going to Chargers with a new "ghost" livery (one of which pulled me over recently).
I think you're going to see the Taurus in a lot of cooler-climate, big cities. Chicago was one of the first big ones to adopt, along with Detroit, who actually uses all of the major options right now.
How long until we start seeing the Ram 1500 Special Service? Ha ha.
