Focus RS confirmed for 2015

2009-ford-focus-rs_13.jpg

Ford sources have confirmed the third generation of the Focus RS will be going on sale sometime in 2015.

Power will reportedly come from a new 4-cylinder, 2.3-liter turbocharged engine developed by Ford to output approximately 330 hp (246 kW). The same engine will also be available for the next-gen Euro-spec Mustang (due in 2014) and will use the most current direct-injection and turbocharging tech promising to reduce fuel consumption.

In the Focus RS, the new engine will be transversely mounted and is expected to have more horsepower and torque compared to the Euro-spec Mustang, as a move to maintain it a flagship model in Ford's European lineup where the bulk of sales are awaited. Although early reports were hinting at electric motors for the rear wheels to cut emissions and boost performance, these plans were eliminated because implementing such tech would have been too expensive.

The 2015 Ford Focus RS will feature the company's Sound Symposer to amplify engine note inside by opening a valve between the engine bay and the cabin. The car will have a Revoknuckle front suspension, just like in the previous RS. This suspension layout has been rejected for the current ST because the engineers considered the electronic torque vectoring system is enough to handle the 247 hp (184 kW) and 265 lb-ft (360 Nm) output.

The new Focus RS will come with a limited slip differential, beefier brakes and tires, along with a sportier interior cabin. It will be sold exclusively in a five-door hatchback variant.

And it probably won't come to the states because apparently we are allergic to fast hatchbacks.

But if it does, that's about the time I'll need a new car.

I don't see why it wouldn't come here. We've got the ST, we're getting the Fiesta in ST trim, they may as well do it. Hell, they practically have the market cornered when it comes to sport compact bruisers. Subaru and Mitsubishi have ejected themselves out of the market on price (or model turnover), and it isn't as though the Mazdaspeed3 will be around that much longer.

Do it, Ford. Then, stick that 2.3L in the Mustang.

I feel like we get the short end of the stick on cars like this though. But maybe since the Focus is now a world car it'll make financial sense to bring it here.

And a 2.3L Mustang, I think I would have strongly consider owning one of those.

The thing that does it for me is the Titanium version. Radar Guided Park Assist has gone from the Executive's Lexus to Everyday Person's Focus. WHO WOULDN'T WANT THAT!!!

It doesn't work very well unfortunately, although I don't think the Lexus version works all that great either.

Me, I prefer to drive my car myself...beside, I wouldn't trust a car to park itself!

I kicked puppies out of the way to get that car. It would torque steer you into every tree you drove past but it's fairly epic. Also I can't imagine the front tires would last more then a few hundred feet before being completely obliterated. I wish they would have made it AWD, it would have been way more entertaining and would be an awesome hoonmobile.

And that rear valance, I want that along with the spoiler.

Built engine or not, as far as I've read it's still using the stock turbo and I doubt 300-350ish HP would be that big a deal considering the MS3 has nearly the same stock...

I'd like to know their source for that number. Autoblog doesn't list that figure, and the official press release doesn't have any HP figures either. The stock turbo certainly won't get you there...

500hp doesn't seem that far-fetched considering Ford and Mountune both worked on the project. I mean I'm sure it's not the most reliable thing in the world either.

I did just ask Brad from fifteen52 on Focus Fanatics though to see what he says though.

Yeah but 500hp on a stock turbo? Really doubting that. Unless they made a turbo upgrade and didn't list it on the upgrades sheet.

I'm not sure what turbo the ST uses, but the one in the fifteen52 on is a Garrett GTX2863R which apparently is good for 450hp on a four cylinder. With the additional stuff I don't see why they couldn't have gotten more power on it.

Here's the turbo info:

If you read the article .....
The goal of the project, which was built in conjunction with fifteen52 and Ken Block, is to double the output of the Focus ST. That means it's supposed to have 504 horsepower.
;)

See the official press release didn't say anything about that. Having worked in the aftermarket parts business for 6 years now, and in charge of listing said parts on a website for the last 2.5, I have come to realize that aftermarket parts companies suck at advertising their crap.

Edit: "Supposed to" doesn't mean crap to me. Hard official numbers are what talks.

I like it. The current Focus was not brilliant and I have always loved them but this is the nicest one for a while, can't wait to see the ST/RS versions.

The new family nose works better on the Focus than I thought it would. Moreso than the facelifted Fiesta.

And they're finally ditching the current front bumper with the vertical metal strips on either side which I always disliked. The replacement looks much neater. 👍

It definitely gives the car a much more premium look than the current model. Although, without the fog lights, that's a lot of empty plastic space on the front.

I need that Focus wagon as an ST with a fully locking automatic transmission.

Why not buy the ST?
The st is a huge step up over the normal focus of any trim level, it usually comes in between 24 and 28k and so far there havent been any major issues Ive heard of other than the ungodly torque-steer.

The face lift looks better than the one I have, mainly because they are finally giving it proper headlights.

The ST is not that pleasant to drive and torque steers fairly bad. The electronic thing that uses the brakes to overcome it isn't that great either. The Fiesta ST is infinitely better as a performance car.

Alright, I've had enough. I've had enough! This question has been burning a hole in my brain for months and months and dammit I can't hold it in anymore. Damn near every single new car has been driving me insane.
