2014 New Zealand / Australia General Discussion

I also asked them about the correct way of saying nissan, ourway "Nissan " or " Neesan"

Turns out we aussie call it datto anyway

I did have a word to One of them about it, he said it is highly likely going to be a joint Aus vs NZ thing due to lack of participation of the other countries, not naming names but.

Name away! New Zealand had about 8-10,000 entrants from the 2010 one iirc and that was on a free demo on the PS3. Motorsport and automotive culture intake in this place is shocking for a first world country but that's probably due to lack of information and accessibility more than anything (+ rugby and drinking usually seem to be on top of our favourite past-times list :indiff: ).

Gaming and fitness done 10 have been eliminated, we just did the 2nd day gaming and now been taken to Philip island to do laps with a 370z

to ad some drama, i slept in at the hotel and had to catch a taxi to the Nismo Hq luckily they got me caught up on the gaming before we went to philip island.

Baa baa black sheep have you any wool..."

Mustafur had to sing us all a song / nursery rhyme as punishment by Nissan for his punctuality. Hahaha

I'm still waiting for my Datto cap LOL.
If it is Australia v New Zealand in the future it will have to be Datto GT Academy.

I was extremely impressed with the event this year compared to 2010.
Special thanks would have to go out to Todd Kelly. He literally spent the whole 2 days with us driving around in the "Coach" to all the locations.

Only thing that went wrong were all the plane flights from around the country, we can only blame the various airlines and airports used for that.

No Qld boys through this year! MINT must of come very close, he was always up there with the top guys. It would be nice to know our official rankings overall. I am keen to know how I went in the 370z particularly.

What's with this Datto business lol? Can't find anything on the internetz about it.

In Australia Nissan used to be called Datsun as it did in many parts of the world.
The term Datto is the Aussie slang (colloquialism) for Datsun as far as I am aware, other Aussies please correct me if I am wrong.
If you go to a track day, sprint etc you will see most guys referring to Nissans as Datto's. Generally older ones.

And as it is know in Australia, if you get an "O" or an "Y" added to the end of your name you have reached legendry status.
eg. Mark Webber = Webbo or Peter Brock = Brocky

And just for proof that it is used in Australia in the mainstream, the news link below refers to the re-launch of Datsun 2 years ago as Datto.

Yeah, it was pretty epic to be a part of such a competition. Meeting a bunch of guys I only just started racing with, as well as a few from 'the other sim', was pretty kewl. It meant the experience was all the more enjoyable.

Hopefully they run it again next year in aus. From what I heard, it probably will happen, with the possibility of nz being included. Either way, our standard in all areas of the competition way exceeded expectations of the Nissan/Sony organisation crew.

I'll be back next year for sure. And with 6 top dogs now to be ineligible, I have should make it to Silverstone ;)

btw, I will be uploading all the video from the weekend sometime this coming week. I'll post the link up when its up.

Cheers,
metal

Can't wait for that, only saw moffat's tongue in cheek interviews.

Well done everyone, and I mean everyone, not just the top 6. Must have been a blast.

@Louie Of course, here we call the 510 a Datto 1600 ;)

Superb event compared to 2010 my main gripe would be 10 of us were knocked out after a few hours and three time trials, which was a real kick in the pants after training hard fitness wise and desperate to drive a real car...

Yep i'll echo everyone else's comments about the final. It was run superbly by Nissan Aus and also Nissan Motorsport. Big thanks to them for their hospitality over the 2 days from letting us into their workshop and disrupting their normal work, to cooking meals and fielding questions about the cars and facility.

A huge thanks needs to go to Todd Kelly though. He spent the whole 2 days with us, drove us around in the Kelly Racing Coach and was with us late Friday night, and all day Saturday. That's time spent away from his family which is already at a premium when you're a racing driver, all to help some Playstation gamers out. Huge respect from me.

And a big thanks to all the guys who were down there competing. Was awesome to meet you all and put some names and faces to gamer tags. A great bunch of guys and I had a ball over the 2 days chatting to you all and having some banter. Great fun.

Agreed with Luca and Josh. Was a great event, has so much fun and really good to finally put some faces to names. I'm more than positive GT Academy will be a success for Australia (and NZ!) for years to come. Again have to thank Sony PlayStation and Nissan Motorsport for hosting it.

Actually ended up googling the thing .

Sounds like they wanted to emphasize the gaming aspect this year (not like it wasn't difficult enough the qualify for race camp the first time around).

Those looking to compete on a probable 2015 Academy did any of you guys want to do a regular Nissan race meet on GT6 say once a month? Had a few rounds against the UK finalists last night and their speed + consistency was on a whole other level to what I was used to so could definitely use a bit of regular practise!

EDIT: Speaking of which what was the format for the gaming part of the competition? Was it all just time-trials or were there some online races as well?

Time trials only.

Yep I'll be keen for semi regular practice, but not sure about time as want to look at some other sims too ;)

Yeah the semi-regular practise shouldn't be too strenuous on anyone's part; hence the monthly suggestion.

TV Clip of the event from Nissan is up. I'm guessing the time-trial format includes a multi-lap run of some sort as opposed to binning 4 laps and then getting that magic flyer?

The time trials came in 3 flavours on the 1st day.
1. 5 Laps Fastest lap was recorded
2. 3 Laps all 3 laps combined
3. 1 Banzai Lap

The 2nd stage on the 2nd day had:
1. 3 or 5 Laps (can't remember), with fastest recorded.
2. 1 Banzai Lap

Sunk in yet?

Hows prep for Silverstone going?

Theres a 14km circuit near my place thats pretty nice, few little rises, but generally flat near the water. I normal ride it, but was thinking about running it. If anyone in Sydney is keen pm me and we'll organise something.

Haha not quite.

Probably will the closer we get to leaving.

For now just enjoying taking a few days off to relax.

Congrats those who qualified for race camp
Create a Gt academy international thread for all updates for race camp and stuff?
Eliminations etc

ABC3 were the only news team to properly report on the GT Academy finalists headed to Silverstone.
