So here it is the Williams, and in lovely Catia CAD rendering...

It's not that bad. At the very least, it is considerably better than the platypus noses of 2012.

Nor is it as bad as the early mock-ups released by Red Bull, which made the extended nose look like a carbon fibre appendage added at the last minute - which I suspect was deliberate, so as to trigger maximum revulsion.

And I keep hearing a weird rumour that Martini will be Williams' title sponsor.

I got used to the step-nose pretty quick, but it just looks like the designers are just putting on an extension on a high nose just so they can have one.

You'll have a tough time trying to sell that, especially since it's already been given a worse name than platypus nose. You are probably right about the RBR nose, and I hope you're right about Martini sponsorship.

Also this will probably be the only release thread I make.

FIA needs to anticipate these damned loopholes when they make the rules, they could have guessed this ugly solution would have been the way to get around the lowered noses, just like they could have anticipated the stepped noses 2 years ago...

But they don't and we end up with freak cars.

^ This guy doesn't mind though.

You know, I reckon that example is preferable to many, if not all of the stepped nose cars from the past two seasons. It's not a mark of beauty by a long stretch, but compared to the initial schlong-nose concept we all got an eyeful of last month and the sketch of the apparent VMJ07 nose, Williams have at least done a decent job of integrating their version into the front-end design judging by that render.

All that's missing is a livery, which should come soon enough.

I've got to say, I'm not a massive fan of it but I'm sure that in time, just as with the stepped-noses I will grow accustomed to it.

Here's an article that I wrote on the Williams, explaining the idea behind the new 'anteater' nose.

Dunno, you might wake up next to an ugly woman every morning and grow accustomed to her, but that doesn't change the fact she stays ugly ;)

I think it makes F1 look ridiculous, and FIA should step in just like they did with those arms they put on the side of cars in the late 90's.

Well how about no. Some of the stepped noses looked really good right from the beginning, Lotus being the prime example, but these will take some serious squinting to be even passable.

That's a point, although I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

The difference between the X-Wings and the 'anteater' nose, is that the former was banned due to safety concerns, whereas the latter has been introduced to improve safety. I am sure though, just as with the stepped-noses that a modesty panel or change of regulations will come into force for 2015.

I wonder which Forrest animal we will be comparing the cars with in 2015 then :D
So far the designers have always managed to exploit the loopholes and come up with something ugly, so unless FIA implements waterproof rules, the situation will stay the same sadly.

The X-Wings you mean, and the FIA just like with the stepped nose are the ones to blame for this actually. The teams warned them back in October and the FIA didn't care. We will probably have to wait an entire season before they change the rules to make the cars look more appealing.

It's a tried and true method if getting the fans on side: make them panic.

I cannot pin down a reliable source. Most if it seems spurred on by speculation that someone will have a retro livery.

The dry spell since we had good looking cars, generally, look like it will be rolling over to 10 consecutive seasons.

Yeah, I agree. It really doesn't look quite as bad as I imagined or as any of the diagrams and early mock-ups suggested. Obviously I would prefer the teams to go for what was "intended" of the rules but I do actually prefer it over the stepped noses and completely flat, raised noses of the past few seasons.

I heard similar rumours regarding Porsche's 919 LMP. So perhaps Martini are making a comeback to motorsport sponsorship?

@prisonermonkeys Good point. I guess we'll see how things shape up over the next few weeks for Williams and a few months down the line for Porsche's LMP program. I forgot about Loeb's 911 Cup Car too, looks beautiful in that livery. Here's hoping though!
