2016 Audi A4

Very... evolutionary... a little... well, they put a kink in the headlamps. đź‘Ť

"Revolution, not evolution."
"No, Alan. Evolution, not revolution"

With the dazzle camouflage in the OP, I think the new car looks a bit like a 3-series from the rear. With more slender brake lights.

VW Group Styling department still progressing at a glacial pace...

Smart enough design, just utterly out-dated already.

That's a lot like me because I evolve but I don't.........revolve.

Boring car is boring.

So basically they took the old A4, added their new 'design language' of a slightly bigger grille, smaller tail-lights and more angles, and thus the new A4 was born.

I hope it has some seriously impressive specs/driving dynamics, because this sector is getting very competitive, with the traditional crop of Germans, the XE just out, the Giulia on the way, and all the '4-door coupe' alternatives that are proving incredibly popular.

How about that MMI knob right in front of the shifter. Fail on the ergo.
Not so bad if you think about it: one, how often would you use both together? And two, the shifter can be used as a palm-rest while you twirl the knob/write characters/swipe the touch-sensitive MMI control.

It depends how excited you get by tech, I guess.

I'm nonplussed on the new look - I've already seen it in the metal as I went to a pre-viewing - but the interior is seriously flash. The Audi interior quality thing is easy to dismiss until you actually experience it, and this thing absolutely murders the current 3-series and even the C-class for interior ambience.

The full-width vents work really well - you just get a current of air circulating around the car rather than a noisy blast to the face. The Virtual Cockpit display in high-end models is as cool as it is in the TT, the B&O sound system is fantastic, MMI works really well, the ambient lighting is neat... as an object to live with it'd be really quite pleasant.

It's also 100+ kilos lighter than the model it replaces and the aerodynamics geek in me loves that it has a Cd of 0.23.

All the above said, I'd still rather have an Alfa Giulia. I can count the number of Audis that genuinely interest me on one hand.

I just realized: this is, for all intents and purposes, the same size as the late-90's A6. Very slightly shorter and lower, but a longer wheelbase and wider. "Compact" my arse.

(Fully recognizing that this entire class has grown at a similar rate, but the A4 has always looked very long)

Longitudinally mounted engine in a car designed for FWD might have something to do with that.

Maybe it's because of the picture it looks as though it'd be uncomfortable with the angle. But you've sat in it so you would know.

The new A4 is what we all knew it would be - A minor styling evolution.

It is a solid and premium looking machine but there is zero flair. Audi play it incredibly safe which is disappointing but not surprising. It is making colossal profits and it is difficult to take a risk on such an important car.

Nobody is expecting a 4 door Lamborghini but a little spark wouldn't go amiss.

It's dull but nice. I would still pick the Lexus IS first in this class followed by the Mercedes-Benz C- Class.

The A5 however I am looking forward to with this slightly sharper styling. I've always liked the A5 and the RS5 is a damn cool car.

That looks pretty tame (not much different than the S4). I know the S4 usually is much different, but the gap seems to have narrowed.

Supacharged... Honestly, this is the first A/S4 that ive genuinely liked. The S7 has been my favorite model but this is starting to grow on me. I know i see at least five A4's a day, yet not one S variant. The review from EngineeringExplained also helped my senses for it, as i always looked at it as thw inferior A6. At this point, i really dont see the point to that model anymore..

I believe the new S4 is now turbocharged.

Audi's S badged cars usually have subtle differences against the standard models that usually go unnoticed. The RS models tend to look a bit more aggressive. Take the last gen Avant for example:

Hmm... odd because on their site they still display the 3.0 as being supercharged..

That's because the US uses silly model year traditions. The 2016 S4 just shown in Frankfurt will arrive on these shores as a 2017 model... in very early 2016. The S4 on the US website is still the last-gen supercharged model.

That's what I was thinking. I thought at least they would update it though in the spec range.

I don't even know what's changed to be honest... I've always had a soft spot for Audi cars so I know it looks boring but can't deny it actually looks pretty nice, my opinion at least.

Engineers were recently spotted out and about in an S4 Avant wagon that’s likely to be an early test mule for the new RS 4. If you look closely, you’ll notice the vehicle is sporting some makeshift wheel arch extensions. This suggests it is running a wider track. The vehicle has also been fitted with the extra wide wheels and tires used on the current RS 4.

Audi. If you absolutely, seriously, positively need the blandest car in a given segment :indiff:

Dunno. Put them side by side and it'd look like this was the direct successor to the B7. There's so little development design wise, you'd never guess that they're a decade apart.

Not as elegant as some recent Audis, but I like it. I've adored the Audi A4 once they started implementing those LED daytime running lights in 2008 or 2009 or so... until seemingly almost everybody had their own LED DRLs for headlights on their cars. The car looks mean up front without being overly aggressive or mean. Well styled.
