I haven't seen any coverage yet but i hope the BBC aren't doing what they did for (I think it was) the Sochi games and substituting Cyrillic letters into words in their animations. If I see "я", "и" or "д"; I read them the way they sound. Not as "r", "n" or "a".
I got the feeling they were trying to be, for want of a better word, exotic and embrace the culture of the host country. To me, it came across as insulting to the host nation and the audience who were presumed to be ignorant.
It was probably just me. Sorry.
Yeah sometimes in trying to be culturally relevant they can accidentally be culturally ignorant. I haven't seen the BBC World Cup intro but the studio is just a standard modern affair. Meanwhile over at ITV they are pretending it's Moscow in 1890's!
