2018 Verizon IndyCar SeriesOpen Wheel

I guess for my debut to this season's IndyCar thread, I am mostly interested in seeing how the new aero package for the IndyCar Series will fare in this stretch of races. I found it interesting seeing Portland and Gateway return. It is a bit sad to not see Watkins Glen return. I guess I also want to see if Josef Newgarden can keep up his solid form from last season.

Nothing like the IndyCar Series. Intrigue, danger, and excitement. Bring on the 2018 season!

Jo New should be fine, he is with Penske after all. It will be interesting to see how the new kits work though.

I get the feeling the old guys will immediately be comfortable as this is more or less the kind of car THEY used to race with while every one else post-cart will take some time to get used to it (although Josef might be the exception).

Now, most people think today's Indy cars were going to be borderline Le Mans style prototypes with the DW12 chassis. You can't really complain with the new aero package looks-wise. The DW12 chassis wasn't gorgeous, but it did look fairly cool. The new aero? Fabulous! We'll just need to see how these cars take on the variety of courses IndyCar races on. Our first sample is on the streets of St. Petersburg, FL in March. There will also be the assortment of ovals and road courses along with more temporary courses. I sure want to see some full livery cars with the new package to get excited about the 2018 season.

Such stunning cars. Best looking Open Wheel car for quite some time. The chrome accents on Ed Jones car top it off brilliantly.

Let's face it- the new cars look amazing. Much more than the previous IndyCar machines. They look like... IndyCars again. Not to say the DW12 was atrocious, but these cars just look a lot better and seem like they won't be cumbersome to drive.

I'm curious to hear your guys's thoughts. Do you think records will be broken at Indy this year? The cars has significantly less downforce so it means their cornering speeds will be down, but I don't think I'd be surprised if we saw some guys touching 240 at the end of the straights. I'm all for the closer racing, but I hope we also get the chance to see some improved times on speedways!

Nope. IndyCar has wanted to make sure speeds stay relatively similar.

I've been seeing some of the IndyCar test videos. Like I said before, these new body styles look great. The body styles are not as dynamic as the old Super Formula cars. The rear wing side elements almost remind me of cars from the former A1GP cars. IndyCar still delivers great racing acting, and I think this coming season will be no different. I guess I will see how the new aero package affects the level of competition and safety apart from the older DW12 chassis. Someone in a YouTube comment noted that the cars seem to have a higher redline for the engines. Not sure if the engine could go higher RPMS or if maybe the drivers are just shifting later.

This should still be some fun-to-watch IndyCar racing. So if you're a fan or you don't know what IndyCar has to provide, get excited. Now.

Sebastien Vettel reported that he had an issue with distortion when he tested “the shield” for Formula One. I wonder if Indy Car’s Windscreen will have the same problem. Looks cool though.

To be honest, that was only run once for one lap and not really developed beyond that. We heard nothing like that when Red Bull ran the Aeroscreen if I remember correctly.

F1's shield screens were never given a fair chance beyond their 2 outings. Indy's shield screen has been in development for over 2 years, so visual distortion will be something that they'll have been looking into.

Those windshields kind of have a fighter jet-like style to them. Not sure how effective they'd be, but they would be interesting to see.

So let me ask you all what I asked in the NASCAR thread- what, if anything, concerns you most about this upcoming season of IndyCar Series racing? I guess what I would be interested in is the performance of these cars. Not just the performance aspects, but also safety and stuff.

What concerns me most is how Speedway racing will be affected by the new aero. Hopefully next to nothing changes because the past several Indy 500s have been amazing.

The full on speedway kit (no downforce mode :P ) will probably be even better now. :D

The only real concern I have is nobody being able to challenge Penske. As much as I want them to win, it's far more exciting when they have lots of competition.

The Indy 500's have been great, but Phoenix last year was horrendously boring.
