2022 Touring Car Discussion Thread - TCR, BTCC, etc.Touring Cars

Fair play to Hill for getting his first pole. As his exploits at Goodwood in Historics show, he will be fun to watch in RWD machinery. Plus Sutton v Hill v Turkington looks tasty for tomorrow :D.

Full grid for tomorrows first race:

A scary fire for Cammish, glad he got out unscathed but it'll be a big job to get that Focus rebuilt. Given how sudden it went up, it had the hallmarks of being a burst fuel line/rail or similar.

Good mix of front and rear wheel drive in the end too. It will be interesting to see how the hybrid element affects the dynamics of the racing tomorrow. Even more so as this will be the sole meeting where everyone gets to use the same amount of hybrid boost.

Sutton looks as quick as ever after switching back to FWD, Plato is finally in a Honda after all these years, and how will EXCELR8 get on now they've got their own engines? Many variables still to unravel, so roll on tomorrow 👍.

Immense first few laps in the BTCC. But what on earth were Marshall's doing in the circuit without yellow flags or a safety car with an entire field going full pelt down the straight. Shocking to see.

Superb win for Ingram in the end. On the evidence of that race, it does look like the FWD cars carry the extra weight of the Hybrid package well over a race distance, as that Hyundai held on nicely. With that said, both the Napa Focus' seemed to drop off as Sutton and Cammish seemed to loose pace near the end. Also, big note on George Gamble, as he backed up an excellent debut qualifying yesterday with a very solid P5 in race 1. He seems to have clicked nicely with that Ciceley 330i.

Also, it's unfortunately just been confirmed that Jake Hill failed the post-race ride height check, so he will start from the back in race 2. Means Sheds is promoted to 3rd on the amended result. On the upside, it does mean we get to watch Hill charge back through the grid in race 2.

Yup Jelley's car literally fell apart on the way to the grid, and Turk's race literally fell apart on the way off the grid! Not a great one for WSR!

The Ciceley boys have been the leading BMW's so far, certainly got one up on WSR after race 2 . And once again, amazing debut weekend for George Gamble. First podium with a 3rd place there, he looked to be on it from the get-go. Him and Morgan could be real dark horses as the season goes on, as it seems Ciceley continue to get to grips with RWD nicely on the back of a mixed 2021.

I'd say Jake Hill will be happy with that reverse grid draw, what a see-saw weekend he's having . Though his mega recovery drive put him in that position to be fair.

Otherwise another epic race, really interesting to see how the drivers were using their limited amounts of Hybrid deployment. Even mix of two RWD and FWD cars upfront as well. I'd say it's definitely had a positive impact so far on the racing, and a welcome replacement for success ballast.

------------Race 3 Summary:

Congrats to Jake Hill, he finally got his win after a topsy-turvy weekend, he drove off into the distance. Sutton and Motorbase as a whole seemed to improve their race pace for race 3, and the battle for 3rd was as close as ever. EXCELR8 look strong, so I'd say they could be quietly confident for this year. I suppose all that running for Ingram at maximum ballast last year provided useful data when packaging the extra Hybrid weight for 2022 .

Overall, a very successful weekend with 3 great BTCC races, and a strong selection TOCA support races as ever. Will be interesting to see how they perform at Brands Indy in 3 weeks with such a short lap. Plus going forward, how will they get on with the limited Hybrid usage based on Championship order.

And with Morgan qualifying a solid P4 and Gamble P7 for Ciceley, its 5 BMW's in the top 7. P2 has historically been just as good/if not a better place to launch from at Brands, so it'll be interesting with Turks and Hill at the front. Otherwise the rest of the grid lines up as follows for tomorrows first race;

The weekend comes full circle for WSR, as Colin Turkington and Jake Hill take a BMW 1-2 in the reverse-grid race. Congratulations also to Bobby Thompson who takes his first-ever podium in the Team HARD Cupra.

Tom Ingram now leads Josh Cook by eight points in the drivers' standings, with Ash Sutton 21 points behind.

Josh Cook showing again why he's called 'The King of Thruxton', as he grabs pole position for race 1 tomorrow. In the end just 0.077s ahead of Jake Hills BMW in P2, with Dan Cammish P3 in the Napa Focus as Motorbase continue to find improvements.

Elsewhere, championship leader Ingram managed a respectable P8 in the EXCELR8 Hyundai, all without hybrid boost; as per the allocation based on championship position. Plato qualified P7, putting him right in the mix for race 1 tomorrow. Potentially a good opportunity for him edge closer to that 100 wins landmark this weekend...

Stunning move by Cook to take Hill around the outside into the chicane, and to then soak up the pressure for the win in race 2 (his 9th at around Thruxton). Super impressive stuff from the King of Thruxton, he looked in control from the get-go. Not just this weekend, but across the season so far he seems more determined as a driver. Ominous signs if the reliability and good fortune stays on his side. Also, as each year goes by, BTC Racing look increasingly like a top-tier outfit within the BTCC as they've developed in such a short time.

In race 3, reverse grid specialist Adam Morgan did it again to take the win for Ciceley. Between the storming start and holding off those behind, he had to work for it, but a big turnaround for them compared to where they started the weekend. Shame to see Plato drop off in race 3, a podium would have been pleasing but a small mistake like that will always be costly around Thruxton. On the upside, the pace is clearly there. Otherwise, Sutton was consistent as ever but Cammish had a weekend to forget.

Overall another great weekend of action. Oulton Park next, could not get more different compared to the speed of Thruxton. Arguably this is where the Hybrid element should have its biggest effect, in the slow corners like Island Hairpin...

Some pretty big news, as the 2023 BTCC calendar has already been finalised and unveiled.

There's been a bit of shuffling, as Snetterton will make an earlier appearance for the 3rd Round in May. But the most significant news is that Donington GP finally makes its return after 20 years. It's been a long time coming, but it will be great to see NGTC cars pounding round the full GP loop.

That's not a bad calendar. Donington GP will be interesting. Shame they haven't tried the Silverstone International thing they were supposed to do in 2020.

Headed out to Snetterton today for the BTCC tyre test, free admission for spectators. Here's some photos.
