Why NyQuil?

I'm listening to a lot of discussion about how much women are backing Harris. Trump leads men, especially non-college-educated men. Harris leads women of all kinds by a larger margin, and women tend to show up more to elections.

Harris's support among women could be mostly down to roe being on the ballot, or a woman being on the ballot. But something I notice that's interesting is that men commit almost all of the crimes in society, and a criminal is also on the ballot. It might not be that all of Trump's supporters are criminals. Certainly I'd expect that most of them are not, but we know that some fraction of them are well documented as criminals.

But it strikes me that the group that commits all of the crime (men) are disproportionately backing a criminal.

Well, sexist as it might sound, I don't think we talk enough about how men commit all of the crime. 80% of violent crimes in the US are committed by men. They represent 93% of the federal inmate population, with similar statistics at state levels. When I see that men are disproportionately backing something, as compared to women, I immediately think "that's probably not a good sign".

I think were you to bring up crime statistics to a MAGA supporter they would probably try and twist it round to "black men commit all the crimes".

White men are incarcerated federally approximately identically to black men (meaning the populations are about the same). That does represent a disproportionate figure for black people, who represent only 13% of the population as compared to 60-70% for white people. So you'd expect to see something like a 5 or 6:1 ratio for white men to black men incarcerated. The similar statistic for men vs, women is insane though. You'd expect that to be roughly 1:1 and instead it's more like 13:1.

Obviously there are additional factors, such as systemic racism within the law and within police departments that lead to higher incarceration rates for black men than white men. I know this has been researched at great length, and findings always conclude some level of racism. However, I'm not familiar of a similar study in which women get away with crimes and men are disproportionately picked on because of biased laws and sexism. In fact, for most of this country's history, it's men who have made the laws. To account for a 13:1 ratio from sexism alone, the bias would have to be absolutely staggering.

We're also ready for tomorrow, no alcohol though First time voting in presidential election (first voted in 2022 midterms AFTER we obtained the US citizenship, never even occurred us to vote as a non-citizen in the 14 years we spent here before becoming citizen) and will vote in-person, simply prefer the experience. We're in PA, so our vote is needed more than ever. Our county happens to be the wealthiest in PA if I'm not mistaken and within the county Biden won last time with like 66% or so, blue wins up and down the ballot here but we're only a small part. Vote is planned for the morning, after that I'm gonna be glued to the news and trying to do some work in-between...

If not, I guess I just drive around the area until I find the polling place and see if I can vote there.

People should be able to move during election time and be able to vote without an issue.

Googling, “where do i vote on election day,” doesn’t bring up a place to put your address and spits out the location?

I did, it has my old address, but my license doesn't match my old address, it has my new address on it. You technically don't need a photo ID to vote in Michigan, but I live in Antrim County, which is one of the election denier's go to's for voter fraud:

I fully expect them to do some illegal things to prevent people from voting because that's the way people around here roll. I could fight it of course, but I'm not sure how well that would go. I'll try my old polling place, but I'm almost certain they won't let me vote since my ID doesn't match my address in their book. They're going to be looking for any and all forms of voter fraud up here and I'm not keen on becoming a GOP talking point.

Apparently, yes, it is. However, in Michigan, the clerk reviews the ballot and decides whether it can be processed with the supplied ID. I feel like that's ripe for voter suppression since a person is looking at it instead of a machine. Maybe I'm worrying too much about it.

Typically, when you change your address, you get something in the mail soon thereafter that's your voter ID card. I haven't gotten mine yet but I got my license. I guess I could go to the Secretary of State's office and ask tomorrow when I'm in town and talk to someone. It just didn't occur to me that this would even be an issue.

We have two early days per week at work where we can leave at 4:30. My days are Tuesday and Thursday. So hopefully I can get to my polling place before the 5 o'clock work crowd hits. Once I get home though I don't want to hear anything about how it's going. I plan on watching ANYTHING but election coverage. Hulu, Netflix, Max but nothing election related.

It's sounding like the "Random $1 million giveaway" might be the closest at the moment for him seeing consequence.
Edit* Apparently, a judge ruled favorably towards Musk b/c they're not doing anymore "giveaways".

I do think there's something brewing behind the scenes as well since he's been on a bit of a, "If Kamala wins, I'm going to be jailed b/c they don't support free speech". Which iirc, was his argument in Brazil when Twitter was blocked when in reality, it was a legal representative issue in the courts, & he was just trying to claim "muh free speech" over that as well.

You’re not. People like Orban & Co. like to pretend that the US is failing etc. but this country is still the largest and strongest economy of the world and has probably the strongest armed forces to go with it. So yes, it does concern the entire world how we vote.

Take another look at the poll and consider that it represents people who are reading this thread. You bet we don't want to see the strongest democratic country become another authoritarian state like Russia, China, North Korea, Hungary etc. There's a reason the despots in charge of those countries are all backing the bronzer-faced brownshirt.

The Supreme Court have decided that the president is above the law so long as their felonies are committed as official duties. So a renewed Trump or his successor will make pretty damn sure they legalise any questionable act by means of a presidential decree. He intends to grossly abuse presidential pardons and executive orders until the whole world cries uncle. If you thought Trump was bad when people were trying to hold him back, think of what'll happen when he has unfettered, absolute power.
