What's the rationale behind the STi and the Mitsi Evo disappearing? When they are gone, where do we look for maximum performance bang for buck in a road car?

I like Impreza's (WRX and STI) so sad to see it go. Not that this is going to impact me in the slightest for at least 5 years, as I am not, and have never been, in the market for a brand new car.
