Are those really the same car?

Your father gives you a shovel.

After a while the blade is worn out, so you take it off and you replace it.

After a while longer the shaft is cracking, so you take it off and you replace it.

After a while after that the handle is starting to wear down, so you take it off and replace it.

Is this still the shovel your father gave you?

In terms of the physical particles, no. But then again, you aren't the same physical particles that you were a year ago.

Interesting question, eh?

As far as the law is concerned, the car is a VIN plate with some parts attached to it.

...and Guatemala.

(This is why I love this forum, we can also be Geology Terrain Planet, as well.)

A part of me wants to plunge inside and see what's in it. I want to take the journey to the center of the Earth.
Idiocy Level: Noob King

Anyway, on topic, it was a huge shock to see something like this happening inside a museum for me. It's saddening to see that such things happened to those historic cars. But I believe that they will manage to restore them all.

As a Kentuckian I can definitely say there are lots of sinkholes here. At least three small one have happened in my neighborhood, one of which in the middle of the street.

Still, it seems very strange that one would affect something so important. Perhaps Dr. Porsche is digging his way out of hell.

That's weird. I had no idea sinkholes were that common. I go through Kentucky all the time (Cave City, Elizabethtown, Glasgow) to get to my dad's (who is in Macon Co. TN) and have never even heard of sinkholes in that area. I know sinkholes in Florida are something that is getting more common but I hope that's not the case with Kentucky.

Yes they are. You can't predict sinkholes. Apparently they're pretty common in some parts of Florida too.
Unpredictable=/=unexpected.
Kentucky = Karst country, underground caves, depleted aquifers.
Sinkholes will be more common among many more areas soon as we continue depleting our ground water sources.

:mad:NOOOoooooooooooooooooooooo !!!! How can this happen ?? stupid GM management ... stupid museum management ... whoever is responsible should be put in Gitmo stat. No if's but's or whatever ... since the GM plant is only a 1/4 mile away (read it somewhere), maybe its going next .. Then production at the site will stop for a very long time ... After that the STUPID management will be like "why don't we just move" ... Why don't you STFU and die IDIOT ... ALL GM management should be fired sued and Gitmo'ed ASAP .. People have gone to jail for way less ... I can't imagine how the owners of the cars (the non-GM owned one's) must feel. I haven't even seen the cars in real life and I'm going ape:censored: .... Usually the more you think about something the less angry you are, but this is the opposite ... I seriously have a headache now ... That's it, tie them all up on a wall and let every Vette lover throw darts at them.

No matter how well they are fixed-up, they will never be the same. Thanks again GM management :censored:tards.

Luckily, other than the '62, the cars damaged weren't that special, but still what a thing to happen. I saw this on Hemmings earlier and thought it was a prank done with models as the pics looked that way.

FTFY

Slightly fixed version but still full of flaws. (and to some extent it's even more nonsensical)

Because I was bored. (and just for fun)

Well, we have no need for a shovel around here, it's the city, but I get the point . I personally would call it the same shovel. Just like if I had a Mustang, swapped the engine, transmission, had it repainted, put a body kit on it, changed the wheels, etc. It's still a Mustang, just different.

Theseus paradox.

Personally, I prefer the late Roger Lloyd Pack's example.

Yup. That is certainly an answer. So in the context of this thread we're left with a problem.

Let's say that Millionth Covette is/was trashed or even heavily damaged. I don't know the history of the Millionth Corvette so let's assume that it uses standard parts available to other Corvettes of the time.

If we restore it with new parts, is it still the millionth Corvette?

If we refer back to your answer and the way I phrased the shovel question, we can reason that yes, that restored car is still the millionth Corvette since the components are identical or at least serve a similar function.

But this leaves us with a problem, because there are probably hundreds of Corvettes with the same makeup as our restored millionth Corvette. The parts that make our restoration might even be from the same batch as the 1,002,173rd Corvette. One could argue that a clone of the Millionth Corvette is now just as valid as the one we just restored.

If you talk to Aristotle, he'd have several answers.

One is based around the intended use of the object. Does the Millionth Corvette still serve its purpose? Debateable. It can still stand in a museum, yes, but it is no longer a time capsule of the conditions that created it.

Another answer is based around how the object is made. The Millionth Corvette was probably made in a factory. The restoration would be done in a shop. This would probably lead you to say that the car is no longer the same.

It can be discussed in great length. It's an interesting brain teaser. Personally I couldn't care less about the Millionth Corvette.
