:mad:NOOOoooooooooooooooooooooo !!!! How can this happen ?? stupid GM management ... stupid museum management ... whoever is responsible should be put in Gitmo stat. No if's but's or whatever ... since the GM plant is only a 1/4 mile away (read it somewhere), maybe its going next .. Then production at the site will stop for a very long time ... After that the STUPID management will be like "why don't we just move" ... Why don't you STFU and die IDIOT ... ALL GM management should be fired sued and Gitmo'ed ASAP .. People have gone to jail for way less ... I can't imagine how the owners of the cars (the non-GM owned one's) must feel. I haven't even seen the cars in real life and I'm going ape:censored: .... Usually the more you think about something the less angry you are, but this is the opposite ... I seriously have a headache now ... That's it, tie them all up on a wall and let every Vette lover throw darts at them.

No matter how well they are fixed-up, they will never be the same. Thanks again GM management :censored:tards.

Theseus paradox.
Personally, I prefer the late Roger Lloyd Pack's example.

Yup. That is certainly an answer. So in the context of this thread we're left with a problem.

Let's say that Millionth Covette is/was trashed or even heavily damaged. I don't know the history of the Millionth Corvette so let's assume that it uses standard parts available to other Corvettes of the time.

If we restore it with new parts, is it still the millionth Corvette?

If we refer back to your answer and the way I phrased the shovel question, we can reason that yes, that restored car is still the millionth Corvette since the components are identical or at least serve a similar function.

But this leaves us with a problem, because there are probably hundreds of Corvettes with the same makeup as our restored millionth Corvette. The parts that make our restoration might even be from the same batch as the 1,002,173rd Corvette. One could argue that a clone of the Millionth Corvette is now just as valid as the one we just restored.

I've heard this argument, but I think the broom/shovel is a bit of a weak example. My HS Biology class roughly gave this example(and I apologize now because it's been 10 years):
  • Joe is a perfectly healthy human being when he has a massive heart attack.
  • Joe has to have a pacemaker to keep living. Is he still human?
  • Years later he has hip replacements. Is he still human?
  • More time passes, and Joe's eyes fail and are replaced with artificial eyes. Is he still human?
  • Finally, a disease attacks and destroys his brain. Doctors insert artificial intelligence technology. Is he still human?

It was longer, but I haven't seen it in a decade. There is no real right answer, and it's the same with the cars. The way I see it, the last line I stated would be crossing the line because it can mess with the person's true identity. The equivalent for the car would be modification of the car, be it the frame or body. It will never be a 100%, absolute identical fix, but it's an attempt to bring the car as close to the original condition, therefore trying to get it to how it was before. The Millionth car was a C4, so mid '90s, and with time comes a few problems, namely advancements in technology (Joe's new eyes). The biggest issue will be body damage, but the quality of repair materials has improved, and there are different methods of doing the repairs, and while this will sent some fanboys screaming in tears, unless they modify the frame or the body beyond what they were as of the collapse, it is still the Millionth Corvette. I'll say the same about the Hammer, the PPG car, and all the others.

That depends on how much of it is replaced.

How is this GM's fault?:lol:

New to me.
Yeah its a 501(c) non profit apparently. I have always wondered why the corvette plant is in Bowling green ky to start off with. Not saying anything bad but just seems like a random place.

Anyone thought of just leaving the Corvettes as they are? Just get them out of the hole and fill the hole obviously, but leave the Corvettes damaged? Of course it would be a difficult thing for everyone that owns the cars to agree on, but it would be neat.

Wonder if GM has any affiliation.
They probably donated money and or assistance. GM has close ties since they do factory delivery programs via the Museum and IIRC the factory tours start at the Museum.

It's because when you build a Big Thing in America, you also get the medium-sized things built right next to the Big Thing. You also get the Big Thing Hotel, Big Thing Restaurant, Big Thing Casino, and the thing which Knocks Off called "hte igb hitng", but gets sued by the Big Thing due to cease and desist.

Cheap, skilled labor, low taxes, cheap land, and Interstate access.

Something tells me that will not be allowed.

GM's press release stated the hole will be filled with dirt and then the floor reconstructed. The ground will be stabilized and any potential sink holes in the area will be addressed so that the museum runs almost a 0% risk of this happening again.

They may know more than we do about those car's conditions. After all, they are working with the incident. I bet people have been down in there poking around. Although, they really won't know anything for sure until they are definitely out.

Well they started on top and fell through. It didn't fall from the roof on top so over all contact and weight dropped would be alot less. Gravel and dirt falling on a car even covering would cause minimal damage. The concrete bloke would cause the most damage but given that is what they were sitting on, unlikely.

The only thing I would seriously worry about is the weight of the cars that landed on top of them.

Karst caves. I'm not sure whether there are any laws protecting them or not.
I've seen them fill sinkholes around there before. Without proper engineering to seal the cause it will just keep drawing the soil out when it gets wet enough.

The only major problem is if the bottom of the sink hole opens into a a cave chamber worth preserving. Any formation though has likely been disturbed by the sink hole.

I apologize if my comments were in anyway threatening or inducing violence or violent behavior. But I still think people responsible should be sued and Gitmo'ed. :D
