Special thanks to TeaKanji, FMecha, commongear, and everyone who mentioned or discovered any issues in GT1 that this mod addresses.

  • How do I install the mod? Apply the .xdelta patch to a valid copy of the PAL Gran Turismo disc. Tutorials on how to apply xdelta patches are widely available on Youtube or elsewhere.
  • Does the mod work on a real Playstation console? Yes, it should, but has not yet been tested on a Playstation.
  • Can I use my normal GT1 savegame? No, the patched game is not compatible with savegames from the base game due to the added and updated content.
  • Are you going to add new cars / cars from demos / cars from GT2? This is not yet possible with the current state of research, as GT1 is a lot less moddable than later games.
  • Will there be a Complete and Light version like GT2+? Not currently, as any changes to the game design are so far very minimal. Historically, the Light version of GT2+ has also had an adoption rate of less than 10% of users, but doubles the build and testing time for a release.
  • Will the mod support the American and Japanese versions of GT1? Yes, in future versions, once enough research has been done to make it work. The Japanese version in particular has differences in its data formats, along with some larger design changes like lighter minimum weights for cars, all of which would need to be straightened out. The PAL version is first as it supports more languages (and is also the disc I owned first!).
  • Are you going to add a 60FPS mode? No, this is not possible to do with this mod, and the PS1 console does not have enough power to run the game at that framerate outside of the specially optimised Hi-Fi mode. Mods or cheats that alter the framerate also break replays and ghost cars.
  • Are you going to increase the garage size? No, this is not possible, as there is only space in memory and in the savegame for the current number of cars, and adding any more will overwrite critical data.
  • Are you going to change (a certain particular detail)? If it is a bug, yes. Otherwise, probably not, as this mod is focusing on bug fixes primarily. However, all of the mod tools used will be openly available so these changes can be made as other mods by other people.
  • How do I tell if the mod is working correctly? In GT Mode, check if the Corvette '67 is present in the Chevrolet dealership.

Demonstration replays Demo 1 and A-7 desync due to minor physics changes.
The base game issue where the Toyota MR2 GT-S makes slightly too much power has not been fixed, to avoid making license test A-6 more difficult.
The Chevrolet Corvette '67 and Mazda Roadster RS '98 have blank car descriptions in languages other than English.
Savegames and replays from the unmodified game will fail to work properly with the modified game.

Alpha 1 - 31/12/2023

The PAL release of Gran Turismo is currently supported for this initial alpha version. Other releases may follow in future. Please note that the version bundled with Moto Toon GP 2 is not yet supported, as it's a slightly different version of the disc.

The bugfixcodes.txt file included lists some further bugfixes in the form of code patches formatted as Gameshark cheat codes. These should be compatible with any cheat device that supports Gameshark v2.2+ codes. In later versions these fixes will be built into the mod itself.

Please do not distribute pre-patched disc images of this modification, in order to avoid any potential legal issues or incorrect association with piracy that could result in its removal and/or an end to development.

Any chance the Japanese exclusive NSX-R GT1 Turbo will end up in the mod somehow? I did have a few things I'd like to see in a GT1 mod and this checks most of the boxes. I never even expected there to be one simply because the first game just doesn't have as much as the later games do.

How practical is it to tweak what AI cars appear in each event as well? If that's possible I have some ideas there.

How practical is it to tweak what AI cars appear in each event as well? If that's possible I have some ideas there.

The car list is hardcoded, and I haven't solved how to do code edits yet, so no new cars for now. The Special dealerships only support one car too, so finding a way to give an added racecar to the player is also a problem (especially as prizes are also hardcoded).

Entry lists for events are hardcoded too - a lot of things that were moved to data files in GT2 are in the code instead for GT1. I probably won't tweak the entry lists myself, as most of them are shared between multiple events and need to make sense in all contexts.

I've been working on this mod every now and then for the last four years between GT2+ and other projects, and the current state of research and tooling is enough to do what's in the mod right now. Whenever I figure out how to make permanent code changes then that'll open up the possibility for more advanced tweaks such as making the Dodge Copperhead sellable while still not being buyable.

In that case it's clear that what you can do at least for now is pretty limited, even if there wasn't much I'd want to see anyway. If it ever becomes possible it would also be cool to see the cut racing mod for the regular Dodge Copperhead get restored, since that's the only car in the game besides the now former arcade exclusives to lack an RM.

Also, doesn't the Griffith Blackpool have a unique RM in the Japanese version?

The Copperhead RM is possible to do, but the model is too detailed for the final game to handle and freezes on the loading screen of multi-car races. It needs optimisation, which would need car model tools.

The Griffith B340 already has its Japanese RM in this mod for variety, I might have missed that detail from the changelog as it was one of the first tests I did a long time ago. The B340 is exactly as it was in the JP release, while the 500 is as it was in PAL.

You did mention the Blackpool being in the mod, you just didn't mention the RM. Then again that RM would have been Japanese exclusive anyway because that model was too.

Also, is it possible to give the Dodge Copperhead some real power upgrades? Even without a racing mod I think it could be a top tier vehicle of you could give it a bit more power.

Possible, but probably outside of the scope of this mod. There are other cars in the 250-270hp range to race it against, and the LM Edition is there as a fast version, so I don't think it was an oversight for it to end up in a relatively low power class.

Gran Turismo plus (GT1+) is a bugfix and update for Gran Turismo. It fixes outstanding bugs in the game, and restores some cut and unused content.

Currently, as an alpha version, only the PAL version of the game is supported.

Expand any of the spoiler tags below for further information on the mod, or see the included readme file.

Special thanks to TeaKanji, FMecha, commongear, and everyone who mentioned or discovered any issues in GT1 that this mod addresses.
What - a - list. Very impressive. Great great great work.
Massive thanks to all for this!

As I mentioned in the GT2 Plus thread, I'm glad that you gave the GT1 the same treatment as well, it deserves it. So thank you!
BTW I didn't expect GT1 to have that much stuff, even if it's mostly little things, that weren't done properly by Polyphony. Still, it's a much more polished game than GT2, no doubt about that.
On another note - is there any kind of missing or not finished stuff that could be added back to GT1 like missing cars, etc.? I really don't know and couldn't find any info about that.

P.S: Can't wait for the NTSC-J version, it's my favourite one and dearest to my heart, I started my Gran Turismo "career" with it back in '98.

Other than the NSX-R GT1 Turbo from the JP version (that was replaced by the GT2 car with the same physics but less top-end power) and the Copperhead RM, as far as I'm aware there are just the two non-turbo Skylines that exist only as a snippet of physics data, the same two that I've previously shown recreations of for GT2+. It's not possible to add any of that stuff to GT1 currently though, which is why alpha 1 includes everything unused on the disc and not any other restored / recreated content.

I don't expect this mod to ever have as wide a scope as GT2+ to be honest - GT1 is much less moddable. The main focus was on making the C2 and NB usable in GT mode, fixing the inaccessible del Sols, and fixing the most detrimental physics issues like the FWD Evo 3 and the crippling slowdown on the tuned GTOs. Everything else was spotted along the way or found in antique bug report threads.

Even if the first game was more moddable I wouldn't expect this mod to have as wide of a scope as mods for later games anyway, simply because there's less content in the game. There are a few other ideas I have but there wouldn't be much.

Is it possible to make the special color cars eligible for the Lightweight Cup? Cause the game counts them as separate vehicles. Also, is it possible to fix the "global parts" glitch where buying two of the same car makes the tuning parts on one accessible on both?

Entry lists are hardcoded, so not currently possible to change. The shared parts pool is by design so I won't be changing it, but either way it'd be a code change so not currently possible.

Any hopes of patch/selector to 60hz? Playing with original hardware

The game will generally not run at 60fps on original hardware - see the FAQ in the first post. It'd also be a code change, so not currently possible.

There's two more bugs in vanilla that I know of - the R33 GTS25t Type M has incorrect NISMO license plates and the Integra Type R has issues with its rear light textures when the brake lights are on and/or on night courses: small white lines appear above the rear indicators, they are not there when the brake lights are off and/or on daylight courses.

What's really cool about the "new" '67 Corvette & all optional parts is that we can now tackle the Megaspeed, the Tuned Car Cup, & maybe some endurance events :)

I wonder how it would do in the Normal Car Cup. It's powerful but wouldn't handle as well as a Viper.

Oh but to be certain I mean hz not framerate. I can't hang with 50
In this case hertz is the frame rate.

Hi,
The old Corvette is really overpowered compared to the other AI cars, so it's quite easy to win the championship despite "poor" handling :)

The question is more along the lines of would it beat the Viper or the TVRs in how quickly it can beat the Normal Cup lol

I'm not that bothered about the plates on the R33 as they're so low-res as to be barely readable and the car that PD modelled does seem to have a handful of optional parts on it from Nismo press photos. Good spot on the Integra though, I suspect it's just a simple mistake in the palette.

Definitely - I've already seen some cool feats pulled off with the Roadster too despite its relatively low power output and lack of a RM. The tuned Corvette is intentionally a car for experts too - keeping to the game' unwritten rules about tyre size upgrades means that it only gets 205mm wide race tyres, and upgraded but not tuned it still has short gearing and tall suspension like the unmodified car. With enough tweaking though, it should be fun!

If you mean a PAL to NTSC conversion, then no - wait for a NTSC version of the mod in the future. If you mean PAL 60Hz, I don't know if an unmodified PS1 can even output that, and I suspect it would break a massive number of assumptions about frame times in the game's code. Very much not feasible.

Hi,
The old Corvette is really overpowered compared to the other AI cars, so it's quite easy to win the championship despite "poor" handling :)

I did wonder whether I should tone back the high grip multiplier it carries over from Arcade mode (even higher than the Vipers), but I think for players without your skill level it's probably needed. Either way, it's deliberately priced higher than any road car other than the Astons to incentivise more casual players to buy something that's easier to drive fast, but also not too expensive so that someone who really wants to have a go with it can still afford it.

Unlike the Roadster which simply uses the advertised January 1998 price for the car to match the other new cars, there wasn't much context for what a 7-litre classic Corvette would be worth in late 90s Japan!

About the Roadster RS I agree, this car works really well. Could it be relied to the "grip multiplier" you describe below?
Agreed also 'bout the Vette, I think one can "master" it after multiple hours of game only.

Good choice I think. By the way it makes me think that the Viper should be a bit harder to drive... It's clearly a game killer, those Dodges :) .
And thanks for your kind words, but I use more the A.I.'s mistakes than my "skills" in this game! :D
The question is more along the lines of would it beat the Viper or the TVRs in how quickly it can beat the Normal Cup lol
Ok, my bad. With clean driving like YOU do, it deserves to be tested... I guess the Vette could be something as fast as the TVRs? ;)

The RS has the same grip level as most other cars (a value of 135, no idea what the units are). The Vipers have a value of 140, and the C2 Vette has 167 - I assume this is to make their level of power a bit easier to control when they have normal road tyres.

I think what makes the RS quick is probably that it has the the wider tyres of the fastest NA Roadsters, but also a bit more power and an extra gear (7 of them with a semi-racing transmission). It's a bit heavier, but I don't know if it's enough to matter.

Will you fix the incorrect price of the Lancer Evo 4?
It should be around 30k, but in the game is around 24k.
Also there is a bug with the NSX (3.2), for some reason when you equip it with differents tyres rather the stock, they will get longer gear ratios.

Yeah, looks like a mistake with the price of the Evo, I'll add it to the to-do list.

Tyres can't affect the gear ratios of a car in GT1 directly, but upgraded tyres are often a larger diameter and the 3.2-litre NSXes have that worse than anything else due to the massive size increase of the rears. Not really much I can do about it other than give it smaller tyres, but that would hurt its performance.

The Corvette is definitely faster than both TVR Griffiths, probably the Cerbera too - for example, I'm lapping the Autumn ring-Mini roughly 1 - 1.5 seconds faster in the Corvette. I just tested that out in the Normal Cup. The Viper is just slightly faster than it, though.
BTW, the Corvette drives nice, I like it, the only issue I have with it is that the rear breaks loose during hard braking - I have to turn on my "human" ABS by rapidly tapping the brakes in order to control it lol

P.S: That 427 is way faster in-game than the real-life car - I'm consistenly clocking 11.8s quarter-mile times, the real 427 did it in 13.8. I also checked out a few other cars like the R33GT-R to see if there is such a big difference as well, but they all posted basically the same quarter-mile times as their real-life counterparts (13.1s for the GT-R in-game). Probably has something to do with the increased grip levels, but it's still a big difference.

Evo IV price is the same across all versions of GT1. After searching in some ancient Japanese car sites I found out a 2,998,000 yen (which would equal 29,998 credits in NTSC-U/PAL versions) listing price for a new car back in 1996. It's not mentioned if that price is for a full-specced or base GSR, though. So it is indeed wrong. The real-life RS is the one that costs around 2,400,000 yen, I guess Polyphony mistakenly took that one and used it for the GSR in-game.

So I can't get past the menu screen. Pressing Gran Turismo mode just results in nothing happening?

Going to need a bit more detail than that I'm afraid - did the patch apply properly (verify the patched image against the CRC in the readme file)? Does the unpatched game work correctly? What platform are you running the game on?
