I'm not especially active on this forum but this looks like fun:

1. In 1995 I won a national science competition in the creative writing category (topic was wildlife corridors). The award was presented by a famous Sydney news reader, Richard Morecroft.

2. When I was 12 (also 1995) I had to do a DT project on an innovative product. I chose the Mclaren F1 which became my favourite car for many years (after learning how awesome it is). I even wrote to the Mclaren HQ in Woking and they sent me an information pack including a full sales brochure and a magazine article/review. Sadly, being 12, I cut up both to put pictures in my project.

3. I was one of the original moderators on the original Official Playstation Australia forum. I had a different moniker back then.

4. My first job was as a call centre operator supplying hints, tips and cheats for video games. We had tens of thousands of games for all platforms. I left before the business died as more people got the internet.

5. I'm married to a Chinese girl who comes from a city in northern China. The city has the fourth largest urban population in China and most people haven't heard of it.

I think #2 is the best thing I've read this week. That's so awesome... probably wouldn't happen today.
(Same with #4; I didn't know those existed  )

@ildd My parents were very impressed at the time that Mclaren just didn't ignore me. After I got the pack, I still had a few questions so I wrote a fax and had my dad send it to them from his office. They replied the same day (by fax) with the info I needed.

Re #4: I haven't looked at a game manual for a while but if you flip to the back page of a PSX or PS2 game manual you will see a bunch of phone numbers for various countries. The calls were charged at like $2 per min, parents would call us to see if their kid had been calling a phone sex line.
We had a massive database with walkthroughs, cheats, strategy guides and even some technical support articles if the game was for PC.

Ah, the good times... When supercar manufacturers cared about the fans, and not only those who had money :)
Now that you say it, I think I remember seeing numbers in a couple early PS2 games. I still have a bunch of them, I'll take a look tomorrow.

The only thing I didn't like about Baotou was the 14 hour overnight train ride to and from. Those bunks are...

Other than that it was great. I personally didn't notice that their was any more wealth than other cities in China. My wife's cousin drove us through some pretty impoverished areas.

The most extreme soapy of wealth I saw in China was in a shopping centre in Shanghai. Can't remember the name but it was overly opulent.

Sadly I haven't learnt much Mandarin, my wife had made nary an attempt to teach me so I'm limited to a few sentences...
