David Coulthard has been signed by Red Bull Racing for the 2005 season. The team has not named a second driver but it is expected that the Austrian-owned team will eventually nominate Austrian driver Christian Klien who did not have a particularly enthralling first year in 2004 but who seems to have been saved because he is an Austrian and Red Bull is fearful of dumping the local hero in favour of Vitantonio Liuzzi, who is Italian. Liuzzi has performed much better than Klien in recent testing despite his lack of F1 experience but it seems that Red Bull is going to try to put him in as a test driver rather than doing the logical thing and giving the FIA International Formula 3000 Champion his chance in F1. There are no guarantees that Liuzzi would accept the role as test driver for the team and may be trying to get a deal with Jordan, although the news that Arden International is no longer interested in buying Jordan is another blow to Liuzzi's ambitions. Jordan is understood to be looking for money and Liuzzi may decided that if he has to be a test driver, it is best to be with a top team although the Italian is hoping to get a guarantee of a race drive from a team which wants him a tester in 2005. This is entirely reasonable given that Liuzzi has already shown that he can be competitive in F1 in tests with Sauber and Red Bull Racing.

Red Bull Racing are keen to run Liuzzi in 2005 but may end up with Klien simply because of circumstances. With the rules as they are, Klien cannot be a test driver in 2005 because he did too many races in 2004 and thus he cannot be included in the team as the third driver. This absurd situation has led to all manner of rumours about the team starting the year with Klien and then switching to Liuzzi but none of these ideas are very intelligent or straightforward. The option is to drop Klien and face the wrath of the Austrian press. If nothing else this would prove that Red Bull wants to be taken seriously as a racing team rather than being a rather parochially-minded sponsor. The team is also expected to name American Scott Speed as a test driver although the European Formula Renault Champion is expected to pop up in GP2 this season. It is worth noting, incidentally, that Red Bull has recently signed up Switzerland's Neel Jani as one of its driver line-up in 2005.

A one-year deal in a starting-to-think-about-developing team. If Coulthard wasn't in the twilight of his career before, he is now, whether he likes it or not.

A shame. :(

It was linked to in the 2005 Team and Driver lineups as well but whatever.

I really think he should have stepped out of F1 gracefully, rather than chucking a JV and going for every last penny he could.

Good for DC and Red Bull. They would have been stupid not to sign him. DC is past his prime, has been for a few seasons, but he still is a decent driver. Beyond that he has so much experience, be it racing, testing or development...that is where he can be used best. Not only that he is a PR machine. He was just spinning his wheels at McLaren, this move is good for him...

There's that, I guess.

But I'd rather DC didn't leave McLaren in the first place. If McLaren can pull their fingers out and get some for of speed next year, they'll be one of the top teams again, and DC will be kicking himself that he left to my mind.

I assume he did leave of his own free will? He wasn't rejected?

It's a smart move by both parties.
DC doesn't feel like it's time to stop yet. The man still loves his sport and enjoys it. There's no reason why he should stop and walk away simply because he doesn't have the speed he used to have.
Red Bull is a new team (more or less) and needs every advantage they can get. And DC is a very experienced and technical man. There's no doubt in my mind that he'll be one of the primary sources for helping set the car up during races. I'm sure Klien will learn a lot from him as well.

I'm not in McLaren of course, but from what we've been able to see, his contract expired and wasn't offered a renewal. Plus, they already had his replacement. I think that his situation in McLaren was more or less like Trulli's in Renault... just too much time in the same team and my guess is that they both got bored of each other. McLaren's future is with Kimi and Montoya now... DC is part of McLaren's past and McLaren is part of DC's past. Besides, from what I've picked up, Montoya isn't a great guy, although I understand he lives in DC's hotel in Montecarlo.

Good luck to David in Red Bull is al I can hope for, since he is really a great character.

Regardless of McLaren pulling a finger out (I hope they do, they have 2 of my 3 fav drivers next year) DC is no longer a top driver. He is good, top 10 easily, but he can no longer go toe to toe with schumi, kimi, alonso, JPM, Rubuens, trulli...even webber or button.

His talent is best spent in development and PR, he has a knack for both. That is what Red Bull needs badly now.

Good point, I didn't think of it that way.

I just hope Red Bull can develop into a regular top-10 team like Jaguar almost did, because I'll be slightly sad to see DC at the back of the field. He's always been one of the best for me.

And to those who say he can't mix it with that German fellow, Kimi, JPM etc, remember this: McLaren performed extremely badly this year. Give them the chance to get their **** together and I'm 101% sure that DC could perform.

Top 10 team? There are only 10 teams! I'd say the results they god were pretty much all on account of Webber.

perhaps he means top ten qualifier on a regular basis

i think that this is a good move by dc. obviously his career is coming to an end soon, and he still would be stepping out with grace by leaving a team when he wants too instead of leaving f1 by being fired by a team. i think quitting is more respectable than been giving the flick

Let me make it clear that DC has always been one of my "Old-skool favorites". But in the last couple of years, excepting his great start on the '02 season, it seems as if he "stopped trying".

Invariably whenever you're doing different than usual in a team you'll be compared to your teammate, and the same happens here. Kimi was doing just as bad as DC in the last year, that's absolutely clear; but he still kept trying (Kimi did). Although his engine was about to blow, he kept on going, and not against Button or Alonso, but against Schumi. If you look closely, it seemed that theonly one who actually went for first place (other than the Kaiser) was Kimi. The others were just as happy battling for second and third.

Still, DC was always left to battle for 14th place with Webber, Fisichella and Panis. It's sad that a driver with the experience and quality of DC has to battle for the low-grid positions. :nervous:

Red Bull racing should grab DC with both arms, since he is a great source of driving information and has one of the best experiences in F1, although being shadowed always by Finnish drivers, he has acquired the best of all. Undoubtedly one of the best drivers in the F1 grid.
