The Gremlin is a very successful but controversial hatchback, and the 1971 'X' version is the sportiest of the range. It is powered by a 152 horsepower straight six of 4.2 litres (258ci) that produces 240lb/ft of torque, and weighs in at just over 1,200 kilos.

The transmission is a 3-speed manual and power is sent to the rear wheels. Although the performance on the Gremlin isn't all that quick by modern standards (60 mph arrives in over 10 seconds), it has huge tuning potential due to its low kerb weight and highly tuneable large capacity (for a hatchback) engine, and could potentially give the hot hatches that already feature on GT a great run for their money...

Thanks to @Aero2000 (and by extension Wiki) for the specs.

I know the AMC Gremlin has been given a bad reputation recently by being called one of the "Top 50 Worst Cars Ever Made", but it's such a nice looking 70's FR Hatchback that is fun to drive.

It's a underrated car with plenty of potential, and should deserve a spot in GT with the other popular American cars of the 70s (1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee, 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1, 1978 Pontiac Trans Am, etc.).

You're missing the fact that these also came with 5.0L 304ci AMC V8's. Roughly 200hp and 300lb-ft of torque.

Those things got real squirrelly, real quick on wet pavement or gravel. Short wheel base really made them dangerous for the unwashed masses. Bias ply skinny tires, at least they slid otherwise you be on your lid.

Seriously ugly and a perfect candidate for a troll car. Always shocks me that 70's Americana made so little horsepower compared to their engine sizes...damn the emissions regs...

Changed how they rated it. They used to measure at the flywheel. Then they changed to at the rear axle. If my motor manuals weren't all boxed up I could give up a close time frame.

That is what I was looking for when searching for this car to be in here. Honestly, I think the car has a lot of race potential when setup properly! Light-weight a decent bit of power! Just stock, I bet these cars would get up and go!

You should see the ones with 550-600 horsepower big block 440s and 454's in them :D

And trying to cope with that awful weight distribution :D
Weight distribution isn't a problem if you've roasted your tires clean off their wheels before moving an inch. They came with a 304 and the 401 will fit in its place without so much as a misplaced hair, and 450hp and over 500ft-lbs isn't hard to muster from a 401. Hell, I'd take a Matador or Javelin with the same engine anyway.
